Vela is a constellation in the southern sky. Its name is Latin for the sails of a ship, and it was originally part of a larger constellation, the ship Argo Navis, which was later divided into three parts, the others being Carina and Puppis. With an apparent magnitude of 1.8, its brightest star is the hot blue multiple star Gamma Velorum, one component of which is the brightest Wolf-Rayet star in the sky. Delta and Kappa Velorum, together with Epsilon and Iota Carinae, form the asterism known as the False Cross. 1.95-magnitude Delta is actually a triple or quintuple star system.
Argo Navis was one of the 48 classical constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy, and represented the ship Argo, used by Jason and the Argonauts on their quest for the Golden Fleece in Greek mythology. German cartographer Johann Bayer depicted the constellation on his Uranometria of 1603, and gave the stars Bayer designations from Alpha to Omega. However, his chart was inaccurate as the constellation was not visible from the Northern Hemisphere.
Vela or Velas may refer to:
Gliese 1132 b (often shortened to GJ 1132 b) is an exoplanet orbiting a red dwarf star (Gliese 1132) 39 light years (12 parsecs) from Earth. The planet is considered uninhabitable but cool enough to possess an atmosphere. Gliese 1132 b was discovered by the MEarth-South array in Chile.
It has been called "one of the most important planets ever discovered beyond the Solar System": Gliese 1132 b is three times closer to Earth than any other known rocky exoplanet and telescopes should be able to determine the composition of its atmosphere, the speed of its winds and the color of its sunsets. This is due in part to the small diameter of its parent star (21% that of the Sun), which increases the effect on the star's light of its transits. The planet's diameter is approximately 20% larger than that of the Earth and its mass is estimated at 1.6 times that of Earth, implying that it is a has an Earth-like rocky composition. Gliese 1132 b orbits its star every 1.6 days at a distance of 1.4 million miles.
The Vela supernova remnant is a supernova remnant in the southern constellation Vela. Its source type II supernova exploded approximately 11,000-12,300 years ago (and was about 800 light years away). The association of the Vela supernova remnant with the Vela pulsar, made by astronomers at the University of Sydney in 1968, was direct observational proof that supernovae form neutron stars.
The Vela supernova remnant includes NGC 2736. It also overlaps the Puppis Supernova Remnant, which is four times more distant. Both the Puppis and Vela remnants are among the largest and brightest features in the X-ray sky.
The Vela supernova remnant (SNR) is one of the closest known to us. The Geminga pulsar is closer (and also resulted from a supernova), and in 1998 another supernova remnant was discovered, RX J0852.0-4622, which from our point of view appears to be contained in the southeastern part of the Vela remnant. One estimate of its distance puts it only 200 parsecs away (about 650 ly), closer than the Vela remnant, and, surprisingly, it seems to have exploded much more recently (in the last thousand years or so) because it is still radiating gamma rays from the decay of titanium-44. This remnant was not seen earlier because in most wavelengths it is lost in the image of the Vela remnant.

Luhman 16 (WISE 1049−5319, WISE J104915.57−531906.1) is a binary brown-dwarf system in the southern constellation Vela at a distance of approximately 6.5 light-years (2.0 pc) from the Sun. These are the closest known brown dwarfs and the closest system found since the measurement of the proper motion of Barnard's Star in 1916, and the third-closest known system to the Sun (after the Alpha Centauri system and Barnard's Star). The primary is of spectral type L7.5 and the secondary of type T0.5 ± 1 (and is hence near the L–T transition). Luhman 16 A and B orbit each other at a distance of about 3 AU with an orbital period of approximately 25 years.
The brown dwarfs were discovered by Kevin Luhman, astronomer from Pennsylvania State University and a researcher in Penn State's Center for Exoplanets and Habitable Worlds, from images made by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) Earth-orbiting satellite—NASA infrared-wavelength 40 cm (16 in) space telescope, a mission that lasted from December 2009 to February 2011; the discovery images were taken from January 2010 to January 2011, and the discovery was announced in 2013 (the pair are the only two objects announced in the discovery paper). The system was found by comparing WISE images at different epochs to reveal objects that have high proper motions.

About 11,000 years ago a star in the constellation of Vela exploded. This bright supernova may have been visible to the first human farmers. Today the Vela supernova remnant marks the position of a relatively close and recent explosion in our Milky Way Galaxy.
Vela Supernova Remnant and Vela X Neutron Star Over 10,000 years ago the core of a massive star collapsed in one it's core during a supernova explosion, forming a neutron star, also know as a pulsar. Located near the heart of the Vela Supernova Remnant in the Southern Constellation of Vela. The Vela pulsar or Vela X, is 12 miles wide and rotates approximately once every 89 milliseconds or 11 times per second. It has the third brightest optical component of all known pulsars and the brightest persistent object in the high energy gamma ray sky. When the 1965 Graves Constellation, “Vela,” rolled into the TotalBoat Workshop we knew we had a great video series about to unfold right before our eyes. Welcome to video 1 in the series on restoring this beautiful keelboat. It's a project that was too big for experienced yachtsman, Mike Zani, who had previously pulled off a total restoration (with help) on his former boat, a 1962 Cape Cod Marlin. Zani, for this project, pulled in a team of crack boat builders and tinkerers with Naval Architect, friend and fellow sailor Ezra Smith, at the helm of the design wheel and with Dan Shea of Bristol Boat Company heading up the hard work that was about to unfold. Step into the workshop and check out the destruction of Vela's cabin house and leaky deck as Dan and Brendan get to work preparing t...
This video starts with a broad view of the entire sky and closes in on the southern constellation of Vela (The Sails). Among huge numbers of faint stars, a very faint double object appears. This is WISE J104915.57-531906.1AB, which is informally known as Luhman 16AB. It is a recently discovered pair of brown dwarfs only six light-years from the Sun. The video then takes you on a fly-through of the space around the nearest stars to the Sun. Some familiar stars are visible, such as Alpha Centauri, Sirius and Barnard's Star, but there is also a faint object only discovered in early 2013 — this is WISE J104915.57-531906.1AB, which is informally known as Luhman 16AB. It is the third closest system to the Solar System. An artist's impression based on the first ever map of the weather on the surf...

With the joinery mostly done and installed, Vela is ready for multiple coats of varnish on her beautiful brightwork, and lots of paint. Using Envy 2-Part varnish, Brendan and the team are able to apply 8 coats of varnish over just 2 days, which gets Vela back to the paint booth at Itchiban Yacht Painters down the street that much faster. Once at Itchiban, Vela becomes a yacht again, with a bright new cockpit and decks painted in Bristol Beige. Her topsides are treated to about 5 coats of Awcraft 2000 in Sea Foam Green and as you'll see in this latest episode, when Vela emerges from the paint shed, she looks like a brand new boat that will be turning heads up and down the northeastern coastline. Watch the whole restoration series and see the amazing transformation of this older fibergla...
Progress aboard Vela, the Graves Constellation undergoing a full restoration in our TotalBoat Workshop, is moving along nicely. The deck beams and carlins from episode 3 have been attached and glued in and this week we see the aft bulkhead shaped to prepare the boat for new decks. Once again, boatbuilder Dan Shea uses cedar strips to make precise patterns for 2 layers of marine plywood decking. Dan gives us pointers on making the patterns and shows us how the first and second layer of plywood are bonded to each other and to the deck beams and deck flange. It's a full on boat show for the cameras and we hope you enjoy episode 4 in the Vela Restoration series.
This video starts with a wide field view of the spectacular southern part of the Milky Way. We close in gradually on a large bubble-shaped region of glowing gas in the constellation of Vela (The Sails). This is the Vela supernova remnant, gas clouds that were ejected from a dying star in a huge explosion about 11 000 years ago. The final detailed view of the oddly shaped Pencil Nebula (NGC 2736) comes from the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile.
The Vela restoration team is in full swing fitting small details pieces like the cockpit coamings, the bow stem fitting and the vital carbon fiber main beam. The bulkheads are reinforced and new chainplates are installed. These are important jobs that not only tighten up the aesthetics, but are vital to the engineering of a reconfigured rig and cabin house. With the main beam installed, the team can open up the cabin down below by cutting away some unsightly bulkheads. Follow along in episode 8 where we continue showing you this amazing transformation of a great older fiberglass hull into a Wednesday Night "Pocket Rocket." It is an object that orbits the Kepler-39 star in the Cygnus constellation. It is actually only big in certain definitions. It is eighteen times more massive than our largest planet, Jupiter, but it's only about 25% larger in size. It is considered a “Hot Jupiter” because it seems to be similar to the composition of Jupiter but is much closer to the sun, making them generally much hotter than our Jupiter. The Kepler 39b, however, is relatively cold for something called a Hot Jupiter, estimated to be about a cool 169 degrees Fahrenheit. # 6 TrES-4b 1,430 light-years away...

This video takes the viewer from a broad view of the southern skies deep into the constellation of Vela (The Sails). Many glowing gas clouds are seen, including some of the strange blue filaments of the Vela supernova remnant. The final image shows the star forming cloud RCW 34 in a very detailed new image from ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile. In the brightest region of this glowing nebula, gas is heated dramatically by young stars and expands through the surrounding cooler gas. Once the heated hydrogen reaches the borders of the gas cloud, it bursts outwards into the vacuum like the contents of an uncorked champagne bottle — this process is referred to as champagne flow. But the young star-forming region RCW 34 has more to offer than a few bubbles; there seem to have been multiple epi...
With Vela's decks and cabin house on and fiberglassed, it's time to apply primer and get a look at the new surfaces to gauge how much filling and fairing needs to be done. TotalProtect Barrier Coat is used on a number of Vela's surfaces both above and below the waterline and the team makes quick work of getting the boat ready for the Itchiban Yacht Paint pros who will grind and prime Vela's hull. Check out the progress aboard this 1965 Graves Constellation as she's restored from stem to stern in the whole video series on Restoring Vela, a great older fiberglass sailboat.

In the last frames, the star Acrux appears from the top. Please note that the line that appears in one of the frames is NOT a meteor ("shooting star"); it's actually the trace of an airplane (this is due to the long exposure - 16 s - of each frame). I used a Canon A2000 IS (with CHDK - Ultra Intervalometer script) mounted on a tripod, with the following parameters: 1 shot per minute, each shot with a 16 seconds exposure. ISO 4...

A supernova is a stellar explosion that briefly outshines an entire galaxy, radiating as much energy as the Sun or any ordinary star is expected to emit over its entire life span, before fading from view over several weeks or months. The extremely luminous burst of radiation expels much or all of a star's material at a velocity of up to 30,000 km/s (10% of the speed of light), driving a shock wave into the surrounding interstellar medium. This shock wave sweeps up an expanding shell of gas and dust called a supernova remnant. Supernovae are potentially strong galactic sources of gravitational waves.A great proportion of primary cosmic rays comes from supernovae. Supernovae are more energetic than a nova. Nova means "new" in Latin, referring to what appears to be a very bright new star shin...

In late June 2013, an exceptional binary system containing a rapidly spinning neutron star underwent a dramatic change in behavior never before observed. The pulsar's radio beacon vanished, while at the same time the system brightened fivefold in gamma rays, the most powerful form of light, according to measurements by NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The system, known as AY Sextantis, is located about 4,400 light-years away in the constellation Sextans. It pairs a 1.7-millisecond pulsar named PSR J1023+0038 -- J1023 for short -- with a star containing about one-fifth the mass of the sun. The stars complete an orbit in only 4.8 hours, which places them so close together that the pulsar will gradually evaporate its companion. To better understand J1023's spin and orbital evolution...

It was one of the greatest mysteries in modern science: a series of brief but extremely bright flashes of ultra-high energy light coming from somewhere out in space. These gamma ray bursts were first spotted by spy satellites in the 1960s. It took three decades and a revolution in high-energy astronomy for scientists to figure out what they were. Far out in space, in the center of a seething cosmic maelstrom. Extreme heat. High velocities. Atoms tear, and space literally buckles. This fascinating, silent 16mm movie comes from the estate of William Hawley Bowlus (May 8, 1896 - August 27, 1967) or someone who was close to him. Bowlus was a designer, engineer and builder of aircraft (especially gliders) and recreational vehicles in the 1930s and '40s. Shown in this film is the plywood XCG-16a experimental military glider, which was ordered by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 based on designs made by Bowlus in 1942. The glider was supposed to be able to fly at 200 miles per hour and carry a 4300 lb. howitzer and full gun crew, or a full squad of twenty soldiers. The test flights shown were in July of 1944. They likely took place in Orlando, Florida although it's possible they were filmed at either Rosamand or the Oxnard Flight Strip, later known as Oxnard Air Force ...

One of the most recognizable constellations in the sky is Orion, the Hunter. Among Orion's best-known features is the 'belt', consisting of three bright stars in a line, each of which can be seen without a telescope. The westernmost star in Orion's belt is known officially as Delta Orionis. (Since it has been observed for centuries by sky-watchers around the world, it also goes by many other names in various cultures, like 'Mintaka'.) Modern astronomers know that Delta Orionis is not simply one single star, but rather it is a complex multiple star system. Delta Orionis is a small stellar group with three components and five stars in total: Delta Ori A, Delta Ori B, and Delta Ori C. Both Delta Ori B and Delta Ori C are single stars and may give off small amounts of X-rays. Delta Ori A, on t...

As if the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy weren't vexing enough, another baffling cosmic puzzle has been discovered. Patches of matter in the universe seem to be moving at very high speeds and in a uniform direction that can't be explained by any of the known gravitational forces in the observable universe. Astronomers are calling the phenomenon "dark flow." The stuff that's pulling this matter must be outside the observable universe, researchers conclude. When scientists talk about the observable universe, they don't just mean as far out as the eye, or even the most powerful telescope, can see. In fact there's a fundamental limit to how much of the universe we could ever observe, no matter how advanced our visual instruments. The universe is thought to have formed about 13.7 bill...
Enfin l...
Visit my website at http://www.junglejoel.com - this video starts by zooming in from the southern Milky Way into a region of dark clouds and young stars in the constellation of Vela. These dark clouds are star-forming regions. One of these clouds includes the "Herbig-Haro" object designated HH 46/47 - a place where jets from a young star are colliding with the surrounding material. The new images were made using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) radio telescope. These images reveal two jets, one coming towards Earth and one moving away. In earlier views made in visible light, the receding jet was almost invisible, being blocked by the dust clouds surrounding the new-born star. Not only has ALMA provided much sharper images than ever before, but it has also allowed as...

Watch SEPTEMBER CLUES: http://blip.tv/file/1272900 The Tribute in Light is a temporary memorial commemorating those lost on September 11, 2001 which is lit for one week per year . The memorial is made up of 88 high-powered spotlights, which create two vertical columns that light up the sky. On a clear night, the memorial is visible from up to sixty miles away. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) divides the sky into 88 official constellations[1] with exact boundaries, so that every direction or place in the sky belongs within one constellation. These are mostly based upon the constellations of the ancient Greek tradition, passed down through the Middle Ages, and contains the signs of the zodiac. The sun passes through the 12 constellations of the zodiac (plus Ophiuchus). Pagan...
Tony Zee talks about a proposal that a sufficiently advanced civilization may employ Cepheid variable stars as beacons to transmit all-call information throughout the galaxy and beyond. They might employ a pulsed neutrino beam to trigger the expansion of a Cepheid at an earlier than normal time, generating a binary signature of normal period or artificially shortened period. One can construct many scenarios wherein it would be desirable for such a civilisation of star ticklers to transmit data to anyone else within viewing range. The beauty of employing Cepheids is that these stars can be seen from afar (we monitor them out through the Virgo cluster), and any developing technological society would seem to be likely to closely observe them as distance markers. Records exist of Cepheids fo...

Follow along in episode 8 where we continue showing you this amazing transformation of a great older fiberglass hull into a Wednesday Night "Pocket Rocket." Vela is a classic 1965 Graves Constellation sailboat undergoing a full restoration in the TotalBoat Workshop. The theory is she has a fast, beautiful, well constructed...

Here's a top 10 list of the most massive known planets in the whole universe like the planet estimated to be 20 times the size of Jupiter # 7 Kepler-39b Kepler 39b was once the biggest planet known to us tiny Earthlings. It is an object that orbits the Kepler-39 star in the Cygnus constellation.

Photons fly out across the universe, energized to the limits found in nature. Billions of years later, they enter the detectors of spacecraft stationed above our atmosphere. Our ability to record them is part of a new age of high-energy astronomy, and a new age of insights into nature at its most extreme. What c...
