Wewak is the capital of the East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea. It is located on the northern coast of the island of New Guinea. It is the largest town between Madang and Jayapura. It is the see city (seat) of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wewak.
Between 1943 and 1945, during World War II, Wewak was the site of the largest Japanese airbase in mainland New Guinea. The base was subjected to repeated bombing by Australian and American forces, most notably in one massive attack on 17 August 1943. Directly to the west of the town centre is a peninsula known as Cape Wom, which was the site of the surrender of Japanese forces in New Guinea on 13 September 1945. The site now houses a small memorial. The former Japanese airfield is still in use as the Wewak International Airport. In August 1945 two war crimes trials were held near Wewak for mutilation and cannibalism. First Lieutenant Takehiro Tazaki was convicted and sentenced to death (later commuted to 5 years imprisonment with hard labour) and another accused was acquitted.
A short drive around Wewak Town Centre. Starting at Wewak Guesthouse and finishing at the road that leads to Pagwi.
This video is an extract from a recently purchased DVD from Campbell Films. http://www.shop.campbellfilms.com/B-25-Mitchell-Bomber-WW2-Films-Pacific-War-Mission-Over-Wewak-CFDVD0121.htm Its purpose is strictly educational in relation to the service of the 3rd Bombardment Group while they were stationed in New Guinea at Dobadura.
Our second stop is in the delightful town of Wewak, in East Sepik Province. A slight hitch along the way, did not stop the VF Team from going ahead with the auditions, and giving away golden tickets to five talented auditionees. Wewak residents and others who travelled in from outside the small town gave us an exciting show. - visit us at http://www.emtv.com.pg/ for the latest news...

When I think of it now that it's done
How it might've gone without a place to belong
I can see we played into their hands
And they picked our bones until we proved them wrong
It's only a moment
The minutes and hours, they fly from me now as then
It's all in the detail
I've been here before but still don't remember when
As we stared in the face of the storm
And the change began to gather over the bend
There was always a chance it would come
But if you can't make it happen nobody can
It's all but forgotten
The minutes and hours, they're nothing that can't be
bought
It's all in the detail
