The Spanish Empire (Spanish: Imperio Español) was one of the largest empires in world history and one of the first of global extent. It reached the peak of its military, political and economic power under the Spanish Habsburgs through most of the 16th and 17th centuries, and its greatest territorial extent under the Bourbons in the 18th century when it was the largest empire in the world. The Spanish Empire became the foremost global power of its time, and was the first to be called the empire on which the sun never sets. The empire, administered from Madrid by the Spanish Crown, comprised territories and colonies in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. It originated during the Age of Exploration after the voyages of Christopher Columbus and lasted until the late 19th century. Spain's territorial reach beyond Europe included the Greater Antilles, half of South America, most of Central America and much of North America (including present day Mexico, Florida, the Southwestern, the Midwestern United States, and Pacific Coastal regions of the United States), as well as a number of Pacific Ocean archipelagos including the Philippines.
Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies is a 1997 transdisciplinary nonfiction book by Jared Diamond, professor of geography and physiology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1998, it won the Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction and the Aventis Prize for Best Science Book. A documentary based on the book, and produced by the National Geographic Society, was broadcast on PBS in July 2005.
The book attempts to explain why Eurasian civilizations (including North Africa) have survived and conquered others, while arguing against the idea that Eurasian hegemony is due to any form of Eurasian intellectual, moral, or inherent genetic superiority. Diamond argues that the gaps in power and technology between human societies originate in environmental differences, which are amplified by various positive feedback loops. When cultural or genetic differences have favored Eurasians (for example, written language or the development among Eurasians of resistance to endemic diseases), he asserts that these advantages occurred because of the influence of geography on societies and cultures (for example, by facilitating commerce and trade between different cultures) and were not inherent in the Eurasian genomes.

Spanish and English colonies: different and the same
In which John Green explores how Spain went from being a middling European power to one of the most powerful empires on Earth, thanks to their plunder of the New World in the 16th and 17th centuries. Learn how Spain managed to destroy the two biggest pre-Columbian civilizations, mine a mountain made of silver, mishandle their economy, and lose it all by the mid-1700s. Come along for the roller coaster ride with Charles I (he was also Charles V), Philip II, Atahualpa, Moctezuma, Hernán Cortés, and Francisco Pizarro as Spain rises and falls, and takes two empires and China down with them. http://www.tomrichey.net In the first part of my lecture series on European colonization of the Americas, I take a look at the Spanish colonists, their goals, and their relationship with the Indians that they encountered. The Spanish were motivated by God, Glory, and Gold, seeking to create an empire in the Americas and to evangelize the Native American population. While many Spanish colonists looked at the Indians as sources of cheap labor to exploit through the encomienda, Bartolomé de las Casas led a movement to abolish this system of labor, wanting to create a climate more friendly to the Catholic Church's efforts to evangelize them. Priests set up missions throughout New Spain in order to convert Native Americans to Christianity.

In which John Green kicks off Crash Course US History! Why, you may ask, are we covering US History, and not more World History, or the history of some other country, or the very specific history of your home region? Well, the reasons are many. But, like it or not, the United States has probably meddled in your country to some degree in the last 236 years or so, and that means US History is relevant all over the world. In episode 1, John talks about the Native Americans who lived in what is now the US prior to European contact. This is a history class, not archaeology, so we're mainly going to cover written history. That means we start with the first sustained European settlement in North America, and that means the Spanish. The Spanish have a long history with the natives of the Americas,...

The Aztec cache known as Offering 7, one of many treasures included in the exhibition Contested Visions, is one of some 130 offerings that were discovered within the Aztec’s Templo Mayor. Its contents--largely aquatic material such as seashells, freshwater fish, coral, and reptiles--evoke the layers of the cosmos, from the watery underworld to the surface of the earth. Here, the Museo del Templo Mayor’s archeaologist Fernando Carrizosa Montfort explains the complex meanings of this remarkable piece during the installation at LACMA. http://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/contested-visions-spanish-colonial-world

A video of the "Spanish king" trying to convince people to come to the Spanish colonies.
It all started when a bunch of spanish settlers and missionaries followed conquistadors to Spain's new Empire. While there they made their own colonies wherever they went, claiming any land they came by as their own. After a while new cultures came out that reflected European Native American and African traditions. The government of the spanish empire helped the catholic church to convert native americans to Christianity. Winning Christianity was as important as gaining land, therefor the spanish wanted to spread their culture and religion and they did so whenever and wherever they could. On the portuguese side it all started when the Treaty of Tordesillas took place in 1994. Portugal claimed its empire in East, Brazil. Portugal began to issue grants of their land to portuguese nobles. ...

This documentary is about the story of the great inca rebellion. The Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire was one of the most important campaigns in the Spanish colonization of the Americas. After years of preliminary exploration and military skirmishes, 168 Spanish soldiers under Francisco Pizarro and their native allies captured the Sapa Inca Atahualpa in the 1532 Battle of Cajamarca. It was the first step in a long campaign that took decades of fighting but ended in Spanish victory in 1572 and colonization of the region as the Viceroyalty of Peru. The conquest of the Inca Empire led to spin-off campaigns into present-day Chile and Colombia, as well as expeditions towards the Amazon Basin. When the Spanish arrived at the borders of the Inca Empire in 1528, it spanned a considerable dist...

Marie Kelleher will discuss the medieval roots of gender and sexuality in Spanish colonial law, beginning with the written law (both secular and ecclesiastical) and how it defines the parameters of respectable female behavior. She will then turn to law as a discursive practice, in which women engaged with both courts and communities to define themselves, paying special attention to how innovations in procedural law (especially inquisitorial procedure) provided the framework for this to take place. She will conclude with a couple of brief case examples on the intersection of law, gender, and violence to illustrate what was at stake in these self-definitions Marie Kelleher, Assoc. Prof. of Medieval History, CSULB, author "The Measure of Woman: Law and Female Identity in the Crown of Aragon,...

This talk presents recent research into the effects of piracy on the inhabitants of the Spanish Empire, focusing on official and popular reactions to it during the heyday of maritime predation, between 1630 and 1750. Fabio López Lázaro is an associate professor of History at Santa Clara University. One night in Old Monterey by the silvery Rio Grande
I fell in love as the Spanish violins played my lovely senorita's serenade
The violins were singing a love song and my heart sang the song that they played
We held each other near till both our hearts could hear my lovely senorita's serenade
Spanish violins sing your love song again
Our hearts are light and gay every time you play my lovely senorita's serenade
[ fiddle ]
The violins seemed to say hold her closer and make her lips your own
I held her in my arms and we shared each other's charms
And the Spanish violins played on
The violins were singing...
