Europe: Finland Military Ready To Join Nato
The country's armed forces are now compatible with NATO's and ready to join the alliance,
Pauli Jaervenpaeae, head of the political department in the military, said.
But he stressed that the question of NATO membership was up to the government and Parliament to decide.
Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Finland, which for decades lived in the Soviet Union's shadow,
has pursued a campaign to anchor the country in Western Europe, joining the European Union in 1995
and adopting the euro as its currency.

Info about the finnish armed forces:
The Finnish Defence Forces (Finnish: Puolustusvoimat, Swedish: Försvarsmakten) are responsible for the defence of Finland. A universal male conscription is in place, under which all men above 18 years of age serve for 165, 255 or 347 days. Alternative non-military service and volunteer service by women (about 500 chosen annually) are possible.
Finland is the only non-NATO EU country bordering Russia. Finland's official policy states that a wartime military strength of 230,000 personnel constitutes a sufficient deterrent. The army consists of a highly mobile field army backed up by local defence units. The army defends the national territory and its military strategy employs the use of the heavily forested terrain and numerous lakes to wear down an aggressor, instead of attempting to hold the attacking army on the frontier.
Finland's defence budget equals approximately 2.7 billion euros or 1.3 percent of GDP. The voluntary overseas service is highly popular and troops serve around the world in UN, NATO and EU missions. Homeland defence willingness stands at 76%, one of the highest rates in Europe.

Panssariprikaatin johtama Maavoimien mekanisoitu harjoitus (Arrow 16) järjestetään 2.-13.5.2016 Pohjankankaalla Niinisalossa. Harjoituksen tavoitteena on kehittää maavoimien mekanisoitujen joukkojen yhteistoimintaa ja suorituskykyä.
Harjoitukseen osallistuu varusmiehiä, reserviläisiä ja henkilökuntaa Panssariprikaatista, Karjalan prikaatista ja Porin prikaatista yhteensä noin 2300 henkilöä. Osana maavoimien kahdenvälistä yhteistyötä harjoitukseen osallistuu lisäksi Yhdysvaltain Euroopan maavoimajoukkojen 2. ratsuväkirykmentin moottoroitu jalkaväkikomppania.
Harjoitus koostuu simulaattoriavusteisesta kaksipuoleisesta taisteluharjoituksesta sekä ampumaharjoituksesta. Harjoituksen johtaa Panssariprikaatin komentaja eversti Pekka Järvi.
The Mechanised Exercise of the Finnish Army (Arrow 16), led by the Armoured Brigade, takes place in Pohjankangas, Niinisalo, from 2 to 13 May 2016. The aim of the exercise is to develop interoperability and improve operational capabilities of the Army's mechanised units.
The exercise will involve approximately 2,300 persons, including conscripts, reservists and regular personnel from the Armoured Brigade, Karelia Brigade and Pori Brigade. A US Army Europe's 2nd Cavalry Regiment's Mechanized Infantry Company will take part in the exercise as part of the two armies' bilateral cooperation.
The exercise consists of simulator-assisted two-way manoeuvres and firing exercises. The exercise is led by Colonel Pekka Järvi, Commander of the Armoured Brigade.

Military service includes conscript service, refresher training, extra service and service during mobilisation as well as participation in call-ups and the examination of fitness for service. Call-ups form the first concrete step into military service.
The civic duty of military service is defined in the second chapter of the law on conscription (called Conscription Act). This duty affects all Finnish men and begins when a man turns 18. It continues till he reaches the age of 60. This means a man is liable for military service and that he is either in service, in the reserve or in the auxiliary reserve.

The Finnish Army (Finnish: Maavoimat, Swedish: Armén) is the land forces branch of the Finnish Defence Forces. Today's Army is divided into six branches: the infantry (which includes armoured units), field artillery, anti-aircraft artillery, engineers, signals, and materiel troops.
Between 1809 and 1917 Finland was an autonomous part of the Russian Empire as the Grand Duchy of Finland. Between 1881 and 1901 the Grand Duchy had its own army. Before that several other military units had also been formed while Finland belonged to Sweden.
The Grand Duchy inherited its allotment system (ruotujakolaitos) from the Swedish military organization. However, for several decades, Russian rulers did not require military service from Finland - operations and defence were mostly taken care by Russian troops based in the Grand Duchy. As a result, officer benefits of the allotment system became practically pensions, as payment was based on passive availability, not on actual service.
During Napoleonic Wars three 1200 men regiments were formed in Finland and Topographic corps in Hamina. In 1821 the Topographic corps was transformed into cadet officers school. In 1829 one of the training battalions was transformed into Young Guard Battalion, the Finnish Guard.

Panssariprikaatin johtama Maavoimien mekanisoitu harjoitus (Arrow 16) järjestetään 2.-13.5.2016 Pohjankankaalla Niinisalossa. More information: http://bit.ly/FDF_conscript Military service includes conscript service, refresher training, extra service and service during mobilisation as well as participation in call-ups and the examination of fitness for service. Call-ups form the first concrete step into military service. The civic duty of military service is defined in the second chapter of the law on conscription (called Conscription Act). The country's armed forces are now compatible with NATO's and ready to join the alliance,

The Mechanised Exercise of the Finnish Army (Arrow 16), led by the Armoured Brigade, takes place in Pohjankangas, Niinisalo, from 2 to 13 May 2016. The aim of the exercise is to develop interoperability and improve operational capabilities of the Army's mechanised units.
The exercise will involve approximately 2,300 persons, including conscripts, reservists and regular personnel from the Armoured Brigade, Karelia Brigade and Pori Brigade. A US Army Europe's 2nd Cavalry Regiment's Mechanized Infantry Company will take part in the exercise as part of the two armies' bilateral cooperation.
The exercise consists of simulator-assisted two-way manoeuvres and firing exercises. The exercise is led by Colonel Pekka Järvi, Commander of the Armoured Brigade.

Osana maavoimien kahdenvälistä yhteistyötä harjoitukseen osallistuu lisäksi Yhdysvaltain Euroopan maavoimajoukkojen 2. ratsuväkirykmentin moottoroitu jalkaväkikomppania.
Harjoitus koostuu simulaattoriavusteisesta kaksipuoleisesta taisteluharjoituksesta sekä ampumaharjoituksesta. Harjoituksen johtaa Panssariprikaatin komentaja eversti Pekka Järvi.
The Mechanised Exercise of the Finnish Army (Arrow 16), led by the Armoured Brigade, takes place in Pohjankangas, Niinisalo, from 2 to 13 May 2016. The aim of the exercise is to develop interoperability and improve operational capabilities of the Army's mechanised units.
The exercise will involve approximately 2,300 persons, including conscripts, reservists and regular personnel from the Armoured Brigade, Karelia Brigade and Pori Brigade. A US Army Europe's 2nd Cavalry Regiment's Mechanized Infantry Company will take part in the exercise as part of the two armies' bilateral cooperation.
The exercise consists of simulator-assisted two-way manoeuvres and firing exercises. The exercise is led by Colonel Pekka Järvi, Commander of the Armoured Brigade.
