The year that Johnny Desmond recorded this familiar tune, performed on national television upon the annual crowning of a brand new Miss America, was also the year that early-TV game show host Bert Parks took over MC duties for that glittery pageant....a role he would play for 25 years. A recording of Parks singing “Miss America” continued to be featured for many years after his departure from the show and subsequent passing in 1992.
Songwriter Bernie Wayne also wrote, or contributed to the writing of, “Blue Velvet,” “Vanessa,” “Laughing On The Outside (Crying On The Inside),” ”Port Au Prince” and the “Chock Full O’Nuts Is The Heavenly Coffee” jingle.

A year after the Boston Pops had released the first version of Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" instrumental, new lyrics by Mitchell Parish opened the door for a number of artists to try their hands at a vocal arrangement. Johnny Desmond
Johnny Desmond (November 14, 1919 – September 6, 1985), born Giovanni Alfredo De Simone, was an American popular music singer.
Biography
Early years
He was born in Detroit, Michigan; and as a boy, sang on a local radio station, but at age 15 he quit to work at his father's grocery. He still retained a love of music, however, and briefly attended the Detroit Conservatory of Music before heading to the nightclub circuit, playing piano and singing.
In 1939 he formed his own singing group. The group was first called the Downbeats, but after being hired to work with Bob Crosby's big band in 1940, it was renamed the Bob-O-Links. The group appeared on 15 commercial recordings by the Crosby orchestra, including two charted hits, "You Forgot About Me" (which reached No. 15), and "Do You Care?" (No. 18).
War years
In the middle of 1941 Desmond decided to leave the Bob-O-Links to go solo. He became the featured vocalist for Gene Krupa's band, replacing Howard Dulaney, in September, recording over a dozen songs, the last of which was "All Those Wonderful Years", a song from the movie Keep 'em Flying, which reached No. 21 on the US charts.

Glenn Miller
Alton Glenn Miller (March 1, 1904 – missing in action December 15, 1944) was an American big band musician, arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era. He was the best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1943, leading one of the best known big bands. Miller's recordings include "In the Mood", "Moonlight Serenade", "Pennsylvania 6-5000", "Chattanooga Choo Choo", "A String of Pearls", "At Last", "(I've Got a Gal In) Kalamazoo", "American Patrol", "Tuxedo Junction", "Elmer's Tune", and "Little Brown Jug". While he was traveling to entertain U.S. troops in France during World War II, Glenn Miller's aircraft disappeared in bad weather over the English Channel.
Early life and career
Miller was born in Clarinda, Iowa, the son of Mattie Lou (née Cavender) and Lewis Elmer Miller. He attended grade school in North Platte in western Nebraska. In 1915, Miller's family moved to Grant City, Missouri. Around this time, Miller had finally made enough money from milking cows to buy his first trombone and played in the town orchestra. Originally, Miller played cornet and mandolin, but he switched to trombone by 1916. In 1918, the Miller family moved again, this time to Fort Morgan, Colorado, where Miller went to high school. In the fall of 1919, he joined the high school football team, Maroons, which won the Northern Colorado Football Conference in 1920. He was named the Best Left End in Colorado. During his senior year, Miller became very interested in a new style of music called "dance band music". He was so taken with it that he formed his own band with some classmates. By the time Miller graduated from high school in 1921, he had decided to become a professional musician.

Sleigh Ride
"Sleigh Ride" is a popular light orchestral piece composed by Leroy Anderson. The composer had the original idea for the piece during a heat wave in July 1946 finished the work in February 1948. It was originally an instrumental piece; the lyrics, about a person who would like to ride in a sleigh on a winter's day with another person, were written by Mitchell Parish in 1950. The orchestral version was first recorded in 1949 by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra. The song was a hit record on RCA Victor Red Seal 49-0515 (45 rpm) / 10-1484 (78 rpm), and has become the equivalent of a signature song for the orchestra. The 45 rpm version was originally issued on red vinyl. The Pops has also recorded the song with John Williams, their conductor from 1979 to 1995, and Keith Lockhart, their current conductor. Over the years, the song has become a Christmas standard.
Details
Leroy Anderson recorded his own version of "Sleigh Ride" in 1950 on Decca 9-16000 (45 rpm) / 16000 (78 rpm). The recording hit the Cashbox magazine best-sellers chart when re-released in 1952.

It was exactly 70 years ago today that bandleader Alton Glenn Miller's name appeared on the casualty lists of the 8th Air Force, having been missing since 15 December, 1944. This PBS program was first aired in December 1984, commemorating the 40th anniversary of Miller's death. The host is veteran actor Van Johnson, the musical director was veteran bandleader Elliott Lawrence. Special guests that evening included Miller alumni Tex Beneke, Johnny Desmond and Marion Hutton, as well as at least one or two of the band members. Others appearing were singers Anita Gillette, Sylvia Syms and Julias LaRosa. The vocal group who performed was led by Hi-Lo's alumni Clark Burroughs. Sadly, they're all gone now except Burroughs, LaRosa and Gillette. This was transferred from an old VHS tape so the video...

With the Skylark "experiment" behind him, Paul Desmond reverted back to the relaxed quartet format that suited him well in the past. The reason? Through Jim Hall, he found a little-known, splendid guitarist in Toronto named Ed Bickert who became his new gigmate in 1974, and this album was meant to show his discovery off. In fact, it sparked a Desmond renaissance where he regained a good deal of the witty spark and erudite cool of his collaborations with Hall, no matter how unfashionable it was to play this way in 1974. Bickert is an even more reticent player than Hall, softer in touch and temperament, but eminently musical, enough to fire up Desmond's creativity. Tupperware is the name of a home products line that includes preparation, storage, containment, and serving products for the kitchen and home. In 1942, Earl Tupper developed his first bell shaped container; the brand products were introduced to the public in 1948.
Tupperware develops, manufactures, and internationally distributes its products as a wholly owned subsidiary of its parent company Tupperware Brands. It is marketed by means of approximately 1.9 million direct salespeople on contract.

Tupperware was developed in 1946 by Earl Silas Tupper (1907–83) in Leominster, Massachusetts. He developed plastic containers used in households to contain food and keep it airtight. The once-patented "burping seal" is a famous aspect of Tupperware, which distinguished it from competitors. Earl Tupper invented the plastic for Tupperware already in 1938, but the product only worked with the emergence of the sale through presentation in a party setting. In 1949, Tupperware introduced the 'Wonderlier Bowl' that gave a start to a revolutionary range of kitchen utensils.
Tupperware pioneered the direct marketing strategy made famous by the Tupperware party. The Tupperware Party allowed for women of the 1950s to work and enjoy the benefits of earning an income without completely taking away the independence granted to women during the Second World War when women first began entering the labor market, all the while keeping their focus in the domestic domain. The "Party" model builds on characteristics generally developed by being a housewife (e.g., party planning, hosting a party, sociable relations with friends and neighbors) and created an alternative choice for women who either needed or wanted to work. Brownie Wise (1913–92) realized Tupperware's potential as a fun commodity... Tupper was so impressed that Brownie Wise was made vice president of marketing in 1951. Wise soon created Tupperware Parties Inc.
During the early 1950s, Tupperware's sales and popularity exploded, thanks in large part to Wise's influence among women who sold Tupperware, and some of the famous "jubilees" celebrating the success of Tupperware ladies at lavish and outlandishly themed parties...

Rexall sold its namesake drugstores in 1977, and renamed itself Dart Industries. Dart merged with Kraftco to form Dart & Kraft. The company demerged, with the former Dart assets named Premark International. Tupperware Brands was spun off from Premark in 1996; Premark was acquired by Illinois Tool Works three years later...

It was exactly 70 years ago today that bandleader Alton Glenn Miller's name appeared on the casualty lists of the 8th Air Force, having been missing since 15 December, 1944. This PBS program was first aired in December 1984, commemorating the 40th anniversary of Miller's death. The host is veteran actor Van Johnson, the musical director was veteran bandleader Elliott Lawrence. Special guests that evening included Miller alumni Tex Beneke, Johnny Desmond and Marion Hutton, as well as at least one or two of the band members. Others appearing were singers Anita Gillette, Sylvia Syms and Julias LaRosa. The vocal group who performed was led by Hi-Lo's alumni Clark Burroughs. Sadly, they're all gone now except Burroughs, LaRosa and Gillette. This was transferred from an old VHS tape so the video quality isn't great but the audio quality here is the best I've heard- other versions uploaded aren't in stereo. Enjoy!

Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster became friends when they played together in Duke Ellington's fabulous band of the early Forties. Here they show that their feeling of kinship hasn't gone away, nearly twenty years after Webster abruptly left the band.
Anytime you put two of the Duke's hornmen together, you'll get magic. The first 12 tracks are from the 60's meeting. Besides tenor and alto, we have Lou Levy on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums. Tracks 13-17 has Ray Nance on trumpet, Lawrence Brown on trombone, Emil Richards on vibes, Russ Freeman on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass, Mel Lewis on drums, and arranged by Jimmy Hamilton, in Los Angeles, January 31, 1961.

With the Skylark "experiment" behind him, Paul Desmond reverted back to the relaxed quartet format that suited him well in the past. The reason? Through Jim Hall, he found a little-known, splendid guitarist in Toronto named Ed Bickert who became his new gigmate in 1974, and this album was meant to show his discovery off. In fact, it sparked a Desmond renaissance where he regained a good deal of the witty spark and erudite cool of his collaborations with Hall, no matter how unfashionable it was to play this way in 1974. Bickert is an even more reticent player than Hall, softer in touch and temperament, but eminently musical, enough to fire up Desmond's creativity. Old Desmond hand Connie Kay lends sympathy and comfort on drums, and Ron Carter is on bass. "Squeeze Me," "Everything I Love," and "Till the Clouds Roll By" are the best examples of the empathy at work here but any track will do, including the two outtakes on the first CD release, the "Song from M*A*S*H" (which, come to think of it, always had a Desmond-like wistfulness about it) and Jobim's "Wave," which develops a suavely songful quality midway through.(AllMusic)...

Garnett R. (G.R.) Davis is Adjunct Artist Teacher of Tuba and Euphonium at Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University, where he currently teaches pre-college students. He has been an adjunct tuba professor at Tennessee State University, Fisk University, Belmont University, Lipscomb University and Murray State University in the past. He holds the B.S. Degree in Music Education from the University of North Alabama and the M.M Degree in Tuba Performance from Indiana University where he was a graduate teaching assistant to Harvey G. Phillips. P.D.- that music because there's many good people playing in that record but the style of the alto is so different from anything else that's on the record or that went before. Did you realize at the time the effect you were going to have on Jazz-that you were going to change the entire scene in the next ten years?
C.P. - well let's put it like this: no. I had no idea that it was that much different.
J.M. - I'd like to stick in a question, if I may. I'd like to know why there was this violent change, after all - up until this time the way to play the alto sax was the way that Johnny Hodges and Benny Carter played alto, and this seems to be an entirely different conception, not only of how to play that particular horn, but of music in general.
P.D. - yeah, how to play any horn.
C.P. - yeah, that I don't think there's any answer to...
P.D. - like the way you were speaking, John.
C.P. - that's what I said when I first started talking, that's my first conception, man, that's the way I thought it should go, and I still do. I mean music can stand much improvement. Most likely in another 25, or maybe 50 years some youngster will come along and take the style and really do something with it, you know, but I mean ever since I've ever heard music I've thought it should be very clean, very precise - as clean as possible anyway - you know, and more or less to the people, you know, something they could understand, something that was beautiful, you know. There's definitely stories and stories and stories that can be told in the musical idiom, you know. You wouldn't say idiom but it's so hard to describe music other than the basic way to describe it - music is basically melody, harmony and rhythm - but I mean people can do much more with music than that. It can be very descriptive in all kinds of ways, you know, all walks of life. Don't you agree, Paul?
P.D. - yeah, and you always do have a story to tell It's one of the most impressive things about everything I've ever heard of yours.
C.P. - that's more or less the object. That's what I thought it should be.
P.D. - another thing that's been a major factor in your playing is this fantastic technique, that nobody's quite equaled. I've always wondered about that, too - whether there was - whether that came behind practicing or whether that was just from playing, whether it evolved gradually.
C.P. - well,you make it so hard for me to answer you, you know, I can't see where there's anything fantastic about it all. I put quite a bit of study into the horn, that's true. In fact the neighbors threatened to ask my mother to move once when we were living out West. She said I was driving them crazy with the horn. I used to put in at least 11 to 15 hours a day.
P.D. - yes, that's what I wondered.
C.P. - that's true, yes. I did that for over a period of 3 to 4 years.
P.D. - Oh - yeah. I guess that's the answer.
C.P. - that's the facts anyway. (chuckle)
P.D. - I heard a record of yours a couple of months ago that somehow I've missed up to date, and I heard a little 2 bar quote from the Klose book that was like an echo from home...
C.P. - yeah, yeah. Well that was all done with books, you know. Naturally, it wasn't done with mirrors, this time it was done with books.
P.D. - well that's very reassuring to hear, because somehow I got the idea that you were just born with that technique, and you never had to worry too much about it, about keeping it working.
J.M. - you know, I'm very glad that he's bringing up this point because I think that a lot of young musicians tend to think that...
P.D. - yeah, they do. They just go out...
J.M.- It isn't necessary to do this.
P.D. - and make those sessions and live the life, but they don't put in those 11 hours a day with any of the books.
C.P. - oh definitely, study is absolutely necessary, in all forms. It's just like any talent that's born within somebody, it's like a good pair of shoes when you put a shine on it, you know. Like schooling brings out the polish of any talent that happens anywhere in the world. Einstein had schooling, but he has a definite genius, you know, within himself, schooling is one of the most wonderful things there's ever been, you know.
J.M. - I'm glad to hear you say this.
C.P. - that's absolutely right.
P.D. - yeah.
C.P. - well?
P.D. - what other record?
C.P. - which one shall we take this time?
J.M. - I want to skip a little while. We, Charlie, picked out "Night and Day", that's one of his records. This is with a band or with strings?
C.P. - no, this is with the live band. I think there's about 19 pieces on this.

Garnett R. (G.R.) Davis is Adjunct Artist Teacher of Tuba and Euphonium at Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University, where he
currently teaches pre-college students. He has been an adjunct tuba professor at Tennessee State University, Fisk University,
Belmont University, Lipscomb University and Murray State University in the past. He holds the B.S. Degree in Music Education
from the University of North Alabama and the M.M Degree in Tuba Performance from Indiana University where he was a graduate
teaching assistant to Harvey G. Phillips. He also studied with William J. Bell at Indiana University.
Mr. Davis served in the 74th Army Band 1969-1971. He also served in the Marine Corps detachment of the U.S. Armed Forces
Bicentennial Band and Chorus, 1974-76 in tours of all 50 states, Canada, and the Caribbean representing the U.S. Department of
Defense during the U.S. Bicentennial Celebration. He worked as a free lance musician in Chicago and Indianapolis and in the staff
orchestra at the Executive Inn Showroom in Owensboro, Kentucky. He has played for Frank Sinatra, Henry Mancini, Mills Brothers,
Johnny Desmond, Frankie Avalon, Shirley Jones, Frankie Masters, Della Reese, Paducah (Kentucky) Symphony, The Bradley Brass,
Tennessee Jazz Orchestra, and in the Firehouse Jazz Band and the General Jackson Showboat Orchestra at Opryland USA. He plays
regularly with the Jerry Vinett Big Band, the Lynn Beal Big Band, the Todd Hill Orchestra, the Nashville Wind Ensemble and Die
Musikmeisters German Band. He has played with several Bluegrass Bands and with the Irish Band, Nashville Weather. He is the
conductor of Tuba Christmas in Nashville, a yearly concert which attracts 100-200 players and an audience of around 2,000.
His students have been winners in such competitions as the Nortel Young Artists Competition, the Colonel George S. Howard
Young Artists Competition at the U.S.Air Force Band, the Knoxville (Tennessee), Paducah (Kentucky) and Nashville (Tennessee)
Youth Symphony Concerto Competitions. Another student honor included participation in the High School All Star Tuba-
Euphonium Ensemble at the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference. Several of his pre-college students have been selected for
the Tennessee All-State Band and six students have been first chair. Three of his students have won the prestigious Governor’s
Scholarship which pays full tuition to the Interlochen Arts Camp. Two of his students have received full scholarships to the
Tanglewood Institute. Other students have received full tuition college scholarships to Vanderbilt University and University of
Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music.
Mr. Davis has also served as choir director at Kingston Springs (Tennessee) United Methodist Church 1999-2004 and at
Goodlettsville (Tennessee) Cumberland Presbyterian Church 2004-2006. He is a life member of Local 257 (Nashville) of the
American Federation of Musicians. He is also a life member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity. He has served as Secretary
of the Harvey Phillips Foundation (musical projects) since its inception in 1978.
