Representing Gender in Mythology - Akshita Nanda
Hosted by Kamini Ramachandran
In conversation with Akshita Nanda
Think about it: characters in myths and legends don’t fall into neat binaries of hero or villain. How can we expand the conversation to consider more sides? These storytellers share layered characters who continue to remind them to question the archetypes we return to.

Nanda Devi : How The Goddess Kept Her Secret
In this talk, I have discussed the process of discovery of the intricate and apparently insurmountable terrain around Nanda Devi, the historical progression of its exploration and touch delicately upon the veil of mythology that exists around the mountain. It has 67 sIides in total and I will take one minute in average per slide to narrate my story. That means you are in for an hour plus lecture. So be prepared and I certainly hope you will enjoy it.
At the very outset I would like to point out that in this talk I have used many historical photographs in an effort to portray the story better and I am grateful to The Himalayan Club for letting me use many such images from their archives. I have also included a few Google Earth video clips with hopes to add interesting perspective for the...

NANDA devi || daughter of Himalaya hindu mythology
The Nanda Devi Plutonium Mission was a joint operation by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Indian Intelligence Bureau (IB) to spy on the nuclear developments being conducted in the Xinjiang Province of China. The agencies cooperated in October 1965 to install a nuclear-powered remote sensing station on the peak of Nanda Devi in the Uttarakhand Garhwal Himalayas.
The mission failed after the plutonium powered Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator was lost in the mountains because of a strong snowstorm.
Nanda Devi was considered the highest mountain in the world before computations in 1808 proved Dhaulagiri to be higher. It was also the highest mountain in India until 1975, when Sikkim, an independent kingdom until 1948 and a protectorate of India thereafter, became a part of the Republic of India. It is located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, between the Rishiganga valley on the west and the Goriganga valley on the east.
The peak, whose name means "Bliss-Giving Goddess",[4] is regarded as the patron goddess of the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas. In acknowledgment of its religious significance and for the protection of its fragile ecosystem, the Government of India declared the peak as well as the circle of high mountains surrounding it—the Nanda Devi sanctuary—off-limits to both locals and climbers in 1983. The surrounding Nanda Devi National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

I have also included a few Google Earth video clips with hopes to add interesting perspective for the viewers. These video clips were made from Google Earth by fellow explorer and friend Ashutosh Mishra. I am grateful for his help too.

The three-week-long Nanda Devi Raj Jat is a pilgrimage and festival of Uttarakhand in India.[1] People from the entire Garhwal division-Kumaon division as well as other parts of India and the world participate in Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra.
The goddess Nanda Devi is worshipped at dozens of places in Kumaon and Garhwal, but the region around Mt. Nanda Devi and its sanctuary, which falls in the Pithoragarh district, Almora district and Chamoli district, is the prime area related to Nanda Devi. In Chamoli, Nanda Devi Raj Jaat is organized once in 12 years. The Jaat (meaning Yatra or pilgrimage) starts from Nauti village near Karnprayag and goes up to the heights of Roopkund and Homekund with a four horned sheep. After the havan - yagna is over, the sheep is freed with decorated ornaments, food and clothings, and the other offerings are discarded.
An annual Nanda Jaat is also celebrated. The Raj Jaat procession goes through villages, where there is a recognized Nanda Devi temple. At Koti, a night halt of the participants takes place where a night-long worship and celebrations take place.
