Chalong & Rawai Beach
The laid back south of Phuket is where Chalong and Rawai are located, both are destinations where visitors can experience a taste of the local culture, away from the bustling tourist beach resorts.
Chalong
Chalong is home to Wat Chalong, the most revered Buddhist temple on the island. Visitors from near and far travel to make merit at the temple with prayers, burning incense and by placing gold leaf on the statues of two monks famed for their role in helping the sick and injured during the tin miners rebellion in 1876.
Another Buddhist landmark which can't be missed is the massive Big Buddha, constructed on a hill between Chalong and Kata. The huge mountain top sitting Buddha statue is made from thousands of tiles of white Burmese marble which glisten in the sun. The site of the Big Buddha offers amazing 360 degree panoramic views of the island.
Chalong also has a picturesque bay and pier, used as a launch pad for speed boats and yachts to visit many of the beautiful tropical islands off the east coast.
Rawai Beach
At the very south of the island, Rawai has a pretty beach with a promenade and bobbing long tail boats in the water. Rawai Beach is not suitable for swimming but is where you can speak directly to a local boat owner and arrange a trip to many of the paradise islands surrounding Phuket's coastline.
Along the beachfront discover the sea gypsy village where the daily seafood market sells the fresh catch of the day, or dine on the promenade at one of the many local seafood restaurants with beachfront seating to enjoy the serene views.

Some remains of older structures have been found, however it is unknown exactly how old they are. The large grounds of Wat Chalong, which is officially named Wat Chaitararam contains a wiharn, a mondop, a ubosot, and a chedi containing a secret relic, a sala, and a crematorium.
Wat Chalong (วัดฉลองหรือวัดไชยธาราราม) is where stands the cast statue of Luang Pho Cham, who helped the people of Phuket put down the Angyee, or Chinese Coolie Rebellion, in 1876 during the reign of Rama V. There are also statues of Luang Pho Chuang, and Luang Pho Kluam, abbots of the temple during later times.
Wat Chalong’s official name is Wat Chaitararam and it is dedicated to Luang Poh Cham, Luang Poh Chuang, and, Luang Poh Kluam, former abbots of the temple.

Chalong, Mueang Phuket
Chalong (Thai: ฉลอง) is a subdistrict (tambon) in the southern portion of Phuket Province, Thailand. It is one of eight subdistricts in the capital district (amphoe mueang) Mueang Phuket.
Sights
The most important of the 29 Buddhist temples on Phuket is located here - Wat Chalong (วัดฉลอง, วัดไชยธาราราม). It is dedicated to two highly venerable monks, Luang Pho Chaem (หลวงพ่อแช่ม) and Luang Pho Chuang (หลวงพ่อช่วง), who with their knowledge of herbal medicine helped the injured of a tin miners rebellion in 1876.
Geography
Neighboring tambon are (from south clockwise) Rawai, Karon, Patong and Kathu of Kathu district and Wichit. To the southeast is the Chalong Bay, with one of touristy beaches of the island.
Administration
The tambon is administrated by a Tambon administrative organization (TAO) created in 1995. It is further divided into 10 villages (muban).

The laid back south of Phuket is where Chalong and Rawai are located, both are destinations where visitors can experience a taste of the local culture, away from the bustling tourist beach resorts.
Chalong
Chalong is home to Wat Chalong, the most revered Buddhist temple on the island. Visitors from near and far travel to make merit at the temple with prayers, burning incense and by placing gold leaf on the statues of two monks famed for their role in helping the sick and injured during the tin miners rebellion in 1876.
Another Buddhist landmark which can't be missed is the massive Big Buddha, constructed on a hill between Chalong and Kata. The huge mountain top sitting Buddha statue is made from thousands of tiles of white Burmese marble which glisten in the sun. The site of the Big Buddha offers amazing 360 degree panoramic views of the island.
Chalong also has a picturesque bay and pier, used as a launch pad for speed boats and yachts to visit many of the beautiful tropical islands off the east coast.

Some remains of older structures have been found, however it is unknown exactly how old they are. The large grounds of Wat Chalong, which is officially named Wat Chaitararam contains a wiharn, a mondop, a ubosot, and a chedi containing a secret relic, a sala, and a crematorium.
Wat Chalong (วัดฉลองหรือวัดไชยธาราราม) is where stands the cast statue of Luang Pho Cham, who helped the people of Phuket put down the Angyee, or Chinese Coolie Rebellion, in 1876 during the reign of Rama V. There are also statues of Luang Pho Chuang, and Luang Pho Kluam, abbots of the temple during later times.
Wat Chalong’s official name is Wat Chaitararam and it is dedicated to Luang Poh Cham, Luang Poh Chuang, and, Luang Poh Kluam, former abbots of the temple.

A funny thing happened on my way to a beach in Phuket (poo-KET). I came upon the annual Vegetarian Festival, a nine-day Chinese celebration thought to bestow good fortune.
