Howard Hoagland "Hoagy" Carmichael (November 22, 1899 – December 27, 1981) was an American composer, pianist, singer, actor, and bandleader. He is best known for composing the music for "Stardust", "Georgia on My Mind", "The Nearness of You", and "Heart and Soul", four of the most-recorded American songs of all time.
American composer and author Alec Wilder wrote of Carmichael in American Popular Song: The Great Innovators, 1900–1950 that he was the "most talented, inventive, sophisticated and jazz-oriented" of the hundreds of writers composing pop songs in the first half of the 20th century.

© Written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics) © Gorrell wrote the lyrics for Hoagy's sister, Georgia Carmichael. However, the lyrics of the song are ambiguous enough to refer either to the state or to a woman named "Georgia". Carmichael's 1965 autobiography, "Sometimes I Wonder", records the origin: a friend, saxophonist and bandleader Frankie Trumbauer, suggested: "Why don't you write a song called 'Georgia'? Nobody lost much writing about the South." Thus, the song is universally believed to have been written about the state. (The photo has very little to do with the song. look for "To Have And Have Not". Brilliant Piece)

Disclaimer, I do not own the rights to these songs, they've just brought a depth of happiness to me so i'd like to share them with all of you! Cheers everyone! =) [Last.fm]: One of the great composers of the American popular song, Hoagy Carmichael differed from most of the others (with the obvious exception of Duke Ellington) in that he was also a fine performer. Such Carmichael songs as "Stardust," "Georgia on My Mind," "Up the Lazy River," "Rockin' Chair," "The Nearness of You," "Heart and Soul," "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening," "Skylark," and "New Orleans" have long been standards, each flexible enough to receive definitive treatment numerous times. Howard Hoagland Carmichael (n. Bloomington, Indiana, 22 de noviembre de 1899 - f. Palm Springs, 27 de diciembre de 1981), conocido como Hoagy Carmichael, fue un compositor, cantante y pianista estadounidense de música popular y de jazz. Está considerado como uno de los grandes compositores de la canción popular estadounidense; entre sus canciones, muchas de ellas consideradas clásicos, se encuentran títulos como «Stardust», «Georgia on My Mind», «Up the Lazy River», «Rockin' Chair», «The Nearness of You», «Heart and Soul», «In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening», «Skylark» y «New Orleans». Carmichael, quien trabajó por poco tiempo como abogado, fue desde sus comienzos un entusiasta del jazz, y en particular de la corneta de Bix Beiderbecke. Su primera composición, «Riverboat Shuffle», f...

This song was written by the American composer and pianist Hoagy Carmichael, who also wrote "Georgia on my Mind". Louis Armstrong recorded this song, and made it famous. This was performed for "Does it Swing?" a show I wrote to introduce 6-12 year olds to swing jazz at the Barbican. Although not specifically a song in the style of swing, it's a beautiful and melancholy love song that I felt these great musicians could make swing. Many jazz musicians covered standard songs and gave them their own flavour. This is sung by Wycliffe Gordon. In rehearsals, I didn't like his approach to singing this song, but I found this performance breathtaking, and it is now my favourite version, beating even Louis Armstrong. It also features Reginald Thomas on piano, and Alvin Atkinson on drums, Abr...

In this interview, Hoagy Carmichael rejects the notion that lots of people knew Bix well. He also mentions a song he had just recorded called "Old Man Harlem", which features a trumpet passage arranged like Bix would play. Thanks to Nick Dellow for graciously sending along this recording which plays after Hoagy's quotes!

A 20 minute summary of the career of Hoagy Carmichael (1899-1981) prepared for the Epsom & Ewell U3A Classic Jazz Group. Hoagy was around right from the beginnings of white jazz and was a great friend and supporter of Bix, He wrote many numbers which have become jazz standards, including Stardust, which many musicians say was the best jazz composition ever written. Let me know what you think! JazzVideoMike
Bob Dylan talks about how creativity happens, in this case, the writing of "Stardust" by Hoagy Carmichael. Part of David McDonald's series, "The Mystery of Creativity," about the connections between creativity and spirituality. Hoagy Carmichael - Lazy River (1930)
Guests: Hoagy Carmichael & Teresa Brewer
Up a lazy river by the old mill run
Lazy, lazy river in the noon day sun
Linger awhile in the shade of the tree
Throw away your troubles, dream a dream of me
You know, before your sister was born
This is what your Mama did for a living
Music opened a whole new world to me
No matter how bad I feel, no matter how sad or sick I am
I just touched these keys and poof, like magic
I always seemed to feel better
I've always known you had talent, Bobbie
This piano is for you, Charlie worked hard for it
See God wouldn't have made you suffer so much
If you weren't gonna make up for it later
How happy you can be
Up a lazy river with me
Throw away your troubles, baby
Dream a dream with me
Up a lazy river with me
From the halfway mark
To be a star, a big star
You gotta be talented obviously
You gotta be tenacious, have charisma
But most importantly, you've gotta have it
A great intangible and you've got it all, Bobbie
You're gonna be bigger than Sinatra
I'd settle for a little Jolson Mama, Mama, Mama
Ah ah ah, there are blue skies up above
Forever long as we're in love
We'll be up a lazy river
Up a crazy lazy river
Up a lazy river
I ain't goin' your way
Get out of my way
