NOTE: There's one thing, I can do at any time of night or day: it's listening to Paul Whiteman's accousticals from early 1920s. It was, ofcourse, first of all Whiteman's genius, but also the freshness and energy of the youth, that made those recordings so dymanic and so inventive in all their arrangement and fantastic orchestration. Fox-trot "Georgia" -- little known despite the fact, it was Walter Donaldson's composition - is no exception here. I like every second of this tune and to make it really remarkable and remembered by you, I ransacked my archives to complete -- instead of one more array of all those coquettishly smiling flappers -- some more unusal collection of photos of the sound transmitters from early 1920s.

This is "the Montmartre Rag," a shockingly original piece of jazz recorded by Mitchell's Jazz Kings in Paris sometime during the May of 1922.
It's disc code is Pathé 6566, which means that the first people to listen to this record listened to it while looking at a cheesy picture of a rooster. Keep that in mind during the first few bars.
This exact recording was taken from Allen Lowe's wonderful "That Devilin' Tune" Jazz compilation.

1922 in jazz
In 1922 in jazz, the jazz age was well underway. Chicago and New York City were becoming the most important centres for jazz, and jazz was becoming very profitable for jazz managers such as Paul Whiteman who by 1922 managed some 28 different jazz ensembles on the east coast, earning over a $1,000,000 in 1922. Standards published that year included "Bugle Call Rag" and "Farewell Blues". Musicians born in 1922 included Carmen McRae and Charles Mingus.
Jazz scene
Despite its popularity, as a form of music Jazz was still not appreciated by many critics, including Anne Faulkner who passed off jazz as "a destructive dissonance", asking if the music "put the sin in syncopation"and Henry van Dyke who described jazz as "an unmitigated cacophony, a species of music invented by demons for the torture of imbeciles.
Chicago in 1922 in particular was attracting bands such as Joe "King" Oliver's Creole Jazz Band at the Lincoln Gardens, joined by Louis Armstrong on August 8, 1922 and the Austin High Gang featuring Frank Teschemacher (clarinet), Jimmy McPartland (cornet), Richard McPartland (guitar and banjo) and Lawrence "Bud" Freeman (sax) who began playing at the Friar's Inn in Chicago. Meanwhile, on the New York scene, Duke Ellington arrived in New York City with Sonny Greer and banjo player Elmer Snowden and met his idol James P. Johnson, Fats Waller who had begun to make a name for himself with his piano rolls and Willie "The Lion" Smith.Coleman Hawkins, already well noted for his high level of profiency joined Mamie Smith's Jazz Hounds and were later hired in New York by Fletcher Henderson.

Dewa Budjana
I Dewa Gede Budjana or Dewa Budjana (pronounced [ˈdewa buˈdʒana]; born August 30, 1963 in Waikabubak) is an Indonesian guitarist, songwriter and composer. He is the lead guitarist and songwriter of the band Gigi. Budjana’s style changed dramatically to jazz as he got to know John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, Jeff Beck, John Abercrombie, Chick Corea and Weather Report. In his early experience, he established a band called "Squirrell" which was popular in the local community. Throughout his musical experience in Indonesia, Dewa Budjana has collaborated with many famous guitarists such as Tohpati, Ridho and Abdee Negara. His ability to combine jazz and rock has put him among the top Indonesian guitarists.
Early life
Budjana's passion and talent in music, especially guitar, has been very dominant since he was in an elementary school in Klungkung, Bali. Budjana’s first teacher was a construction worker who lived nearby. He stole money from his grandmother to buy his first guitar He prioritised guitar in his life, and started to teach himself by playing rock songs. He became more passionate about music, and was reflected when Budjana moved to Surabaya, East Java, where he took a classical music course, performed with a band and participated in many of music performances. After graduation, he went to Jakarta to pursue a career as professional musician. While there, he came across Jack Lesmana, a jazz maestro and father of jazz musician Indra Lesmana, who taught Budjana the philosophy of jazz.

The key members of the group (leader/cornetist Paul Mares, trombonist George Brunis, and clarinetist Leon Roppolo) were childhood friends from New Orleans.
In 1922, they started a 17-month residency at the Friar's Inn Nightclub in Chicago and in August they made their first recordings. Although Mares (unlike Nick LaRocca of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band) was modest about his own playing, saying that he was very influenced by King Oliver, he actually sounded quite a bit different and had a voice of his own.
Roppolo was the first significant soloist on record, while Brunis would have a long career playing Dixieland. The changing rhythm sections sometimes included the first great jazz bassist Steve Brown (although largely inaudible on his early session), drummer Ben Pollack (a future bandleader), and, on a pair of memorable sessions in 1923, pianist Jelly Roll Morton. Among the future standards introduced by the NORK were "Farewell Blues," "Panama," "That's a Plenty," and "Tin Roof Blues"; the latter included a famous Brunis trombone solo.
The band broke up in 1924 when Mares and Roppolo returned to New Orleans. With Santo Pecora on trombone they regrouped for a fine session on January 1925, but Roppolo was already suffering from mental problems; the group's final date two months later was without Roppolo, who would soon be institutionalized for the remainder of his life.
In 1934 and 1935 two recording sessions took place that revived the New Orleans Rhythm Kings name, but George Brunies was the only original memeber of the band to take part in the sessions.
Mares came back for one further session in 1935 but seemed happy in retirement, leaving the legacy of the NORK to history.
Various former members of the original New Orleans Rhythm Kings revived the band's name at various times from the 1930s through the 1950s.

The jazz guitar pioneer JOHN KONGSHAUG (1922-1995) was born in Trondheim, Norway, and started his professional career in 1942. By the end of the 1940s he was one of the leading guitar solists in Norway.
In 1959 he moved to Sweden, where he played with Carl-Henrik Norin, Bjarne Nerem, Arne Domnérus, and in the orchestras at the Opera and the Stockholm Philharmonic. Later he was a sideman much in demand, and played with Charlie Norman, Alice Babs, Östen Warnerbring, Monica Zetterlund, Cornelis Wreeswijk, The Osmonds, Eretha Kitt, Roger Whittaker, Barney Kessel and many, many others.
John Kongshaug was a versatile guitar player, but due to his extensive work as a sideman, he never followed his own jazz career. This album of 26 tracks recorded from 1954 and approximately 25 years onwards, is actually the first jazz album in his own name. Her we can enjoy the artistery of a forgotten guitar pioneer who was at par with some of the best jazz musicians in his time - just listen to his duets with Barney Kessel (tracks 22-23).

BIOGRAPHY
A key figure in the first period of jazz history, Oliver's career was a mix of triumph and miscalculation. He was bandleading in New Orleans in the early years of the century, but it wasn't until the 1910s that he really rose above the other local groups. He went to Chicago in 1919 and created what became the Creole Jazz Band around 1921, which Louis Armstrong joined in 1922. They were a sensation, and made the first important group of records by black jazzmen. His later band, the Dixie Syncopators, was less successful, and turning down an offer from New York's Cotton Club may have been a crucial mistake (it went to Duke Ellington). Though he was still touring and recording, he was out of fashion by the early '30s and was often barely able to play, owing to poor teeth. He died in Savannah, Georgia, reduced to working as a pool-hall janitor (COOK, Richard; MORTON, Brian. The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings. 8th edition. London: Penguin Books, 2006, p. 997).

BIOGRAPHY
A key figure in the first period of jazz history, Oliver's career was a mix of triumph and miscalculation. He was bandleading in New Orleans in the early years of the century, but it wasn't until the 1910s that he really rose above the other local groups. He went to Chicago in 1919 and created what became the Creole Jazz Band around 1921, which Louis Armstrong joined in 1922. They were a sensation, and made the first important group of records by black jazzmen. His later band, the Dixie Syncopators, was less successful, and turning down an offer from New York's Cotton Club may have been a crucial mistake (it went to Duke Ellington). Though he was still touring and recording, he was out of fashion by the early '30s and was often barely able to play, owing to poor teeth. He died in Savannah, Georgia, reduced to working as a pool-hall janitor (COOK, Richard; MORTON, Brian. The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings. 8th edition. London: Penguin Books, 2006, p. 997).

Charles Mingus Jr. (April 22, 1922 – January 5, 1979) was an American jazz double bassist, composer and bandleader. His compositions retained the hot and soulful feel of hard bop, drawing heavily from black gospel music and blues, while sometimes containing elements of Third Stream, free jazz, and classical music. He once cited Duke Ellington and church as his main influences.
Mingus espoused collective improvisation, similar to the old New Orleans jazz parades, paying particular attention to how each band member interacted with the group as a whole. In creating his bands, he looked not only at the skills of the available musicians, but also their personalities. Many musicians passed through his bands and later went on to impressive careers. He recruited talented and sometimes little-known artists, whom he utilized to assemble unconventional instrumental configurations. As a performer, Mingus was a pioneer in double bass technique, widely recognized as one of the instrument's most proficient players.
