William Billings (October 7, 1746 – September 26, 1800) is regarded as the first American choral composer.
William Billings was born in Boston, Massachusetts. At the age of 14, the death of his father stopped Billings' formal schooling. In order to help support his family, young Billings trained as a tanner. He possibly received musical instruction from John Barry, one of the choir members at the New South Church, but for the most part he was self-taught. Billings had an unusual appearance and a strong addiction to snuff. His contemporary wrote that Billings "was a singular man, of moderate size, short of one leg, with one eye, without any address & with an uncommon negligence of person. Still, he spake & sung & thought as a man above the common abilities." Billings died in poverty in Boston on September 26, 1800, leaving behind a widow and six children. His funeral was announced in the Columbian Centinel: "Died- Mr. William Billings, the celebrated music composer. His funeral will be tomorrow at 4 o'clock, PM from the house of Mrs. Amos Penniman, in Chamber-street, West-Boston."
John Adams (October 30 [O.S. October 19] 1735 – July 4, 1826) was an American lawyer, author, statesman, and diplomat. He served as the second President of the United States (1797–1801), the first Vice President (1789–97), and as a Founding Father was a leader of American independence from Great Britain. Adams was a political theorist in the Age of Enlightenment who promoted republicanism and a strong central government. His innovative ideas were frequently published. He was also a dedicated diarist and correspondent, particularly with his wife and key advisor Abigail.
He collaborated with his cousin, revolutionary leader Samuel Adams, but he established his own prominence prior to the American Revolution. After the Boston Massacre, despite severe local anti-British sentiment, he provided a successful though unpopular legal defense of the accused British soldiers, driven by his devotion to the right to counsel and the "protect[ion] of innocence". As a delegate from Massachusetts to the Continental Congress, Adams played a leading role in persuading Congress to declare independence. He assisted Thomas Jefferson in drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1776, and was its foremost advocate in the Congress. As a diplomat in Europe, he helped negotiate the eventual peace treaty with Great Britain, and acquired vital governmental loans from Amsterdam bankers. Adams was the primary author of the Massachusetts Constitution in 1780 which influenced American political theory, as did his earlier Thoughts on Government.

Chester was a patriotic anthem composed by William Billings and sung during the American Revolutionary War. Billings wrote the first version of the song for his 1770 songbook The New England Psalm Singer, and made improvements for the version in his The Singing Master's Assistant (1778). It is the latter version that is best known today. The curious title of the song reflects a common practice of Billings's day, in which tunes were labeled with (often arbitrarily chosen) place names. Billings's song evidently has little more to do with any particular town named Chester than his hymn tune Africa has to do with Africa. With identifiable names for compositions, performers could select different lyrics to sing with the music without creating confusion. This song would rival Yankee Doodle as t...
A hymn composed by William Billings with words by Isaac Watts. Billings published the original version in 1770 in his hymnbook "The New England Psalm Singer" but later revised and reprinted it in 1778 in "The Singing Master's Assistant," then after later revisions in "Music in Miniature" (1779). Here are the lyrics: Now shall my inward joys arise, And burst into a Song; Almighty Love inspires my Heart, And Pleasure tunes my Tongue. God on his thirsty Sion's Hill Some Mercy-Drops has thrown, And solemn Oaths have bound his Love To show'r Salvation down. Why do we then indulge our Fears, Suspicions and Complaints? Is he a God, and shall his Grace Grow weary of his saints? Can a kind Woman e'er forget The Infant of her Womb, Amongst a thousand tender Thoughts Her Suckling have no Room? ...
Quire Cleveland under Artistic Director Ross W. Duffin, singing at Historic St. Peter's Church in downtown Cleveland, April 6, 2014. Published in The Singing Master's Assistant, this presents a biblical love lyric from the Song of Songs (Solomon 2:1-8,10-11) in a lively and highly varied setting. There is colorful word painting ("skipping," "rise up"), frequent changes of meter, and places where the harmony is incomplete by European standards, giving it a kind of primitive quality. But the feeling is honest and joyful and the music itself is completely infectious.

William Billings' "Shepherd's Carol" performed by the Roanoke College Choir under the direction of Jeffrey Sandborg.
A hymn written and composed by the early American composer William Billings in "The Singing Master's Assistant" (1778) telling of the coming of the angels to the shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem to proclaim Jesus' birth: 1. Methinks I see an Heav'nly Host, Of Angels on the Wing; Methinks I hear their chearful Notes, So merrily they sing: 'Let all your Fears be banish'd hence, Glad Tidings I proclaim, For there's a Saviour born to Day, And Jesus is his Name. 2. Lay down your Crooks, and quit your Flocks, To Bethlehem repair; And let your wand'ring Steps be squared By yonder shining Star. Seek not in Courts or Palaces, Nor royal Curtains draw; But search the Stable, see your God Extended on the Straw. 3. Then Learn from hence, ye rural Swains, The Meekness of your God, Who left the...

He wrote hundreds of choral compositions, which were set to sacred or devotional texts for use by church choirs, singing schools, and musical societies. Extremely popular in his own time, Billings's music was denigrated during the nineteenth century when European styles governed American musical tastes. In the twentieth century his genius was recognized, and his music is widely sung and studied. Originally published in six tunebooks, the 338 extant pieces were issued in a scholarly edition by the American Musicological Society and The Colonial Society of Massachusetts as The Complete Works of William Bi...

“The Choral Drama William Billings of Boston is a unique concept for a concert,” said Dr. Christopher Shelt, Professor of Music. “Through theatrical arts we get to see a portrait of this significant early American composer while hearing a concert of his music.” The Belhaven Concert Choir, Belhaven Chorale and a full company of actors helped bring to life the story of the man who wrote the song that stirred the spirit of American Revolution. Dr. Shelt adds, “William Billings was a larger than life character and has many funny stories to share. He was a colorful, witty, humorous, unkempt composer and vocal educator that changed the face of American music. The concert will be both educational and entertaining.”
