Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, independent India's best-known soldier, has died; he was 94. Manekshaw spent his final days at a military hospital in Wellington; he had developed several medical complications. Manekshaw was affectionately called Sam Bahadur because of his association with the Gorkha Rifles. He died a little after midnight with his immediate family by his side.

Field marshal is a military rank. Traditionally, it is the highest military rank in an army.
The origin of the rank of field marshal dates to the early Middle Ages, originally meaning the keeper of the king's horses (from Old German Marh-scalc = "horse-servant"), from the time of the early Frankish kings.
Some nations use the title of marshal instead, while some have used field marshal general. The Air Force equivalent in the Commonwealth and many Middle Eastern air forces is marshal of the air force (not to be confused with air marshal). The corresponding naval ranks are normally fleet admiral, grand admiral or admiral of the fleet.
Traditionally, upon their promotion, field marshals are awarded a decorative baton as a symbol of their rank. The baton is often studded with jewels and inlaid with precious metals. In many countries like Austria-Hungary, Prussia and Germany, extraordinary military achievement by a general (a wartime victory) is required for a field marshal.
Historically, however, several armies used field marshal as a divisional command rank, notably Spain and Mexico (Spanish: mariscal de campo). In France, Portugal and Brazil (French: maréchal de camp, Portuguese marechal de campo) it was formerly a brigade command rank.

Idi Amin Dada (c. 1924 – 16 August 2003) was the military dictator and third President of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. Amin joined the British colonial regiment, the King's African Rifles in 1946. Eventually he held the rank of Major General in the post-colonial Ugandan Army and became its Commander before seizing power in the military coup of January 1971, deposing Milton Obote. He later promoted himself to Field Marshal while he was the head of state. While serving in the British Regiment he toured Kenya.
Amin's rule was characterised by gross human rights abuse, political repression, ethnic persecution, extrajudicial killings, nepotism, corruption, and gross economic mismanagement. The number of people killed as a result of his regime is estimated by international observers and human rights groups to range from 100,000 to 500,000. During his years in power, Amin shifted in allegiance from being a pro-Western ruler enjoying considerable Israeli support to being backed by Libya's Muammar al-Gaddafi, the Soviet Union and East Germany.

The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association's 2015 Scottish Pipe Band Championships were held on 25 July in the beautiful surroundings of Levengrove Park in Dumbarton. This year the Grade One competition was a Medley one and this video documents the performance by World Champions Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band under Pipe Major Richard Parkes MBE. The band was placed second in the Grade One Competition. Sarath Fonseka had won a pardon in January from newly elected President Maithripala Sirisena after being convicted by the government of former President Machinate Rajapaksa of offences ranging from corruption to engaging in politics in uniform. Fonseka's promotion could help Sirisena gain the confidence of the military and strengthen the president's position versus Rajapaksa in a future election. There were sideshows beyond the far end of the competition field. Perhaps it was the wind direction, but they seemed louder than usual this year. In particular there are occasional car horn sounds from one of the sideshows. These were loud enough to be picked up while the band was playing - so if you feel there is something momentarily disturbing the impeccable line of this band don't blame the band!
