Rajiv Mehrotra has been a personal student of HH The Dalai Lama for more than thirty years & describes himself as “a most unworthy chela” of his. Till 2012 he was the host one of the country’s longest running, and most widely viewed talk shows on public Television, In Conversations. It was rated the most watched programme in its genre across all television channels in India. He was a familiar face on Indian television for more than 40 years.
His books include The Mind of The Guru, The Spirit of The Muse, Understanding The Dalai Lama,The Essential Dalai Lama, Thakur - a biography of Sri Ramakrishna and Conversations with The Dalai Lama, on Life, Living and Happiness.
In the 1970’s he was a student of Swami Ranganathananda, who was later President of The Ramakrishna Mission and later of the yoga icon BKS Iyengar. He serves as the Secretary & Founding Trustee of The Foundation for Universal Responsibility of H.H. A respected former diplomat and scholar took office as India's first "untouchable" president on Friday.
K-R Narayanan took the oath of office in Hindi in Parliament's ornate Central Hall a week after his election victory was announced.
The new president said the concerns of the common man would now take prominence in his country's affairs.
K-R Narayanan entered the Central Hall of India's Parliament in New Delhi on Friday to a fanfare of trumpets.
Members of both houses of Parliament watched the swearing-in of India's new president, which was broadcast on national television.
The 76-year-old Narayanan took the oath of office, a week after his election victory was announced.
Indian presidents are by tradition elected by federal and state lawmakers rather than by the public.
Narayanan's victory had been assured long before the vote when party bosses announced he was their favourite candidate.
Though the government is run by a prime minister, the largely ceremonial post of president is considered the nation's highest office.
Under the constitution, the president must approve a bid by a party or coalition of parties to run the government.
That duty has taken on significance since elections last May left no party with a clear majority in Parliament.
Already, two governments have fallen since last May.
Speaking to the assembled lawmakers after taking an oath, the new president said he will strive to do everything to preserve India's constitution.

"As president of India, it will be my endeavour to preserve, to protect and to defend the constitution in every aspect, including the (inaudible) that India will promote in the international peace and security."

As a Dalit - the modern term for members of Hinduism lowest class once known as "untouchable" - Narayanan has first hand knowledge of the plight of the weakest members of society.
Dalits make up an estimated 25 per cent of India's 970 (m) million people.
Narayanan takes office as India prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of independence from Britain on August 15.
The anniversary has prompted soul-searching as the country reviews its lack of progress in fighting poverty and creating opportunity for the majority of its citizens.

Kocheril Raman Narayanan ( listen ; 27 October 1920 – 9 November 2005) was the tenth President of India.
Born in Perumthanam, Uzhavoor village, in the princely state of Travancore (present day Kottayam district, Kerala), and after a brief stint with journalism and then studying political science at the London School of Economics with the assistance of a scholarship, Narayanan began his career in India as a member of the Indian Foreign Service in the Nehru administration. He served as ambassador to Japan, United Kingdom, Thailand, Turkey, People's Republic of China and United States of America and was referred to by Nehru as "the best diplomat of the country". He entered politics at Indira Gandhi's request and won three successive general elections to the Lok Sabha and served as a Minister of State in the Union Cabinet under former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Elected as the ninth Vice President in 1992, Narayanan went on to become President in 1997. He was the first - and, so far, only - member of the Dalit community, to hold the post.

K-R Narayanan took the oath of office in Hindi in Parliament's ornate Central Hall a week after his election victory was announced.
The new president said the concerns of the common man would now take prominence in his country's affairs.
K-R Narayanan entered the Central Hall of India's Parliament in New Delhi on Friday to a fanfare of trumpets.
Members of both houses of Parliament watched the swearing-in of India's new president, which was broadcast on national television.
The 76-year-old Narayanan took the oath of office, a week after his election victory was announced.
Indian presidents are by tradition elected by federal and state lawmakers rather than by the public.
Narayanan's victory had been assured long before the vote when party bosses announced he was their favourite candidate.
Though the government is run by a prime minister, the largely ceremonial post of president is considered the nation's highest office.
Under the constitution, the president must approve a bid by a party or coalition of parties to run the government.
That duty has taken on significance since elections last May left no party with a clear majority in Parliament.
Already, two governments have fallen since last May.
Speaking to the assembled lawmakers after taking an oath, the new president said he will strive to do everything to preserve India's constitution.

"As president of India, it will be my endeavour to preserve, to protect and to defend the constitution in every aspect, including the (inaudible) that India will promote in the international peace and security."

The anniversary has prompted soul-searching as the country reviews its lack of progress in fighting poverty and creating opportunity for the majority of its citizens.

Kocheril Raman Narayanan ( listen ; 27 October 1920 – 9 November 2005) was the tenth President of India.
Born in Perumthanam, Uzhavoor village, in the princely state of Travancore (present day Kottayam district, Kerala), and after a brief stint with journalism and then studying political science at the London School of Economics with the assistance of a scholarship, Narayanan began his career in India as a member of the Indian Foreign Service in the Nehru administration. He served as ambassador to Japan, United Kingdom, Thailand, Turkey, People's Republic of China and United States of America and was referred to by Nehru as "the best diplomat of the country". He entered politics at Indira Gandhi's request and won three successive general elections to the Lok Sabha and served as a Minister of State in the Union Cabinet under former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Elected as the ninth Vice President in 1992, Narayanan went on to become President in 1997. He was the first - and, so far, only - member of the Dalit community, to hold the post.
