Harold Adrian Russell "Kim" Philby (1 January 1912 – 11 May 1988) was a high-ranking member of British intelligence who worked as a double agent before defecting to the Soviet Union in 1963. He served as both an NKVD and KGB operative.
In 1963, Philby was revealed to be a member of the spy ring now known as the Cambridge Five, the other members of which were Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt and, possibly, John Cairncross. Of the five, Philby is believed to have been most successful in providing secret information to the Soviet Union. His activities were moderated only by Joseph Stalin's fears that he was secretly on Britain's side. Philby was an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from 1946 to 1965.
Biographical accounts
A Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal by Ben Macintyre is a definitive biography of Philby, published in 2014.[73]
Philby: The Life and Views of the KGB Masterspy by Phillip Knightley, Deutsch, 291 pp, f.p. 1988, is a detailed and well-sourced biography. The author was able to visit Kim Philby in Moscow, during the last years of his life, and interview him.
Fiction based on actual events
Philby, Burgess and MacLean a Granada TV drama written by Ian Curteis in 1977, covers the period of the late 1940s, when British intelligence investigated Maclean until 1955 when the British government cleared Philby because it did not have enough evidence to convict him.
Philby has a key role in Mike Ripley's short story Gold Sword published in 'John Creasey's Crime Collection 1990' which was chosen as BBC Radio 4's Afternoon Story to mark the 50th anniversary of D-Day on 6 June 1994.
A character modeled on Philby appears in the 2006 spy film The Good Sheperd. Billy Crudup plays Archibald "Arch" Cummings, a British intelligence officer who eventually defects to the Soviet Union.
Cambridge Spies, a 2003 four-part BBC drama, recounts the lives of Philby, Burgess, Blunt and Maclean from their Cambridge days in the 1930s through the defection of Burgess and Maclean in 1951. Philby is played by Toby Stephens.
German author Barbara Honigmann's Ein Kapitel aus meinem Leben tells the history of Philby's first wife, Litzi, from the perspective of her daughter.[74]
Speculative fiction
One of the earliest appearances of Philby as a character in fiction was in the 1974 Gentleman Traitor by Alan Williams, in which Philby goes back to working for British intelligence in the 1970s.
In the 1981 Ted Allbeury novel The Other Side of Silence, an elderly Philby arouses suspicion when he states his desire to return to England.[75]
The 1984 Frederick Forsyth novel The Fourth Protocol features an elderly Philby's involvement in a plot to trigger a nuclear explosion in Britain. In the novel, Philby is a much more influential and connected figure in his Moscow exile than he apparently was in reality.[76]
In the 1987 adaptation of the novel, also named The Fourth Protocol, Philby is portrayed by Michael Bilton. In contradiction of historical fact, he is murdered by the KGB in the opening scene.
In the 2000 Doctor Who novel Endgame, the Doctor travels to London in 1951 and matches wits with Philby and the rest of the Cambridge Five.
The Tim Powers novel Declare (2001) is partly based on unexplained aspects of Philby's life, providing a supernatural context for his behaviour.[77]
The Robert Littell novel The Company (2002) features Philby as a confidant of former CIA Counter-Intelligence chief James Angleton.[78] The book was adapted for the 2007 TNT television three-part series The Company, produced by Ridley Scott, Tony Scott and John Calley; Philby is portrayed by Tom Hollander.
Philby appears as one of the central antagonists in William F. Buckley Jr's 2004 novel Last Call for Blackford Oakes.[75]
The 2013 Jefferson Flanders novel The North Building explores the role of Philby in passing American military secrets to the Soviets during the Korean War.

British double agent Kim Philby detailed his life of betrayal and the ease with which he was able to pass secrets to his Soviet controllers in newly-discovered video footage broadcast by the BBC on Monday (April 4).
Philby was one of the Soviet Union's most successful spies who penetrated the heart of the British establishment and passed secrets back to Moscow for three decades, part of a ring of British double agents recruited in the 1930s.
The video, discovered by the BBC in the official archives of the Stasi, the former East German Intelligence Service, shows Philby, who defected to Moscow in 1963 and died there in 1988, lecturing Soviet spies in 1981 about his life as an agent.
"Dear Comrades," he begins, delivering his lecture to a rapt audience in his upper class English accent.
Philby said he became interested in communism while at Cambridge University, and explained how he was recruited by Moscow in the 1930s to infiltrate Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, the foreign spy agency now known as MI6, the BBC said.
He disclosed how easy it was to steal secrets as he began to rise through MI6's ranks.
"Every evening I left the office with a big briefcase full of reports that I had written myself, full of files and actual documents from the archive," Philby said.
"I used to hand them to my Soviet contact in the evening. The next morning I would get the files back, the contents having been photographed and early the next morning I would put them back in their place. That I did regularly year in year out."
The shadowy world and double-dealing of Philby and others in the "Cambridge Five" spy ring - such as Anthony Blunt, Guy Burgess, Donald Maclean - has long fascinated British audiences.
In one excerpt from the Stasi lecture, Philby detailed how he was ordered to undermine his boss so he could take over as head of an MI6 section responsible for unmasking Soviet agents, calling it a "very, very dirty story".
"After all, our work does imply getting dirty hands from time to time," he said. "So I set about the business of removing my own chief. You oughtn't listen to this," he told the East German spies, provoking laughter.
Philby, stationed in Washington as the liaison officer between the CIA and MI6 from 1949-51, said he escaped detection for so long because he was part of the British governing class system. Many MI6 colleagues had much to lose as they had been involved in his recruitment and promotion, he said.
He fled to Moscow in 1963 when new evidence of his work for the Soviet Union arose. He alleged he was able to escape from Beirut because the MI6 agent sent to watch him was an avid skier and had gone off to the Lebanese mountains after hearing news of a snowfall.
Philby's hour-long address ends with simple advice to the spies: 'Deny everything'.
"My advice to you is to tell all your agents that they are never to confess," said Philby, who died in Moscow in 1988 aged 76.

Plot: A film based on historical events that took place from June 24th to September 24th, 1947. The film introduces two new 'smoking gun' documents that attempt to shed new light on the Roswell crash in New Mexico around July 1st, 1947. The film also examines the crash of a B25 that killed two Army Air Force Intelligence Officers under very mysterious circumstances while they were on a UFO mission. Were they the victims of sabotage? If so by whom...the Americans? Or were the Soviets somehow involved? It is the first UFO documentary ever made that has no testimonials or ufologists in it.

Plot: KGB agent Major Valeri Petrofsky has been reassigned at the request of the KGB Chairman for a secret mission wherein he is sent to England to establish a residence near an American military base and receive various items for couriers from the USSR. John Preston is the top British spy catcher, currently at odds with his superior because he doesn't lick his boots. After a recent operation caused his superior some embarrassment, he is reassigned to the menial task of overseeing airports and ports. One day one the couriers Petrofsky was expecting has an encounter with customs which leaves him dead. Preston then goes through his things and finds that he was carrying an atomic bomb component. Preston now suspects that someone is bringing in parts for an atomic bomb, and obtains permission from an official higher than his own superior to attempt to find this person. And back in the USSR, Petrofsky's boss is so disgruntled that Petrofsky has been taken from him that he calls his old friend, the Vice-Chairman of the KGB, to find out what's going on because he believes that the Chairman wouldn't be able to do any of these things without his friend's input. But his friend is just as incredulous as he is. So he tries to find out what the Chairman is up to.

Plot: In the late 1940s, British intelligence believes they have a Russian spy in their midst. They narrow the list to 5 or so individuals one of whom is Donald Maclean, who was assigned to the British Embassy in Washington and had full access to US atomic secrets. As they slowly build their case against Maclean, they assign Kim Philby to Washington as the senior liaison officer to the CIA. He is soon joined there by an old friend, Guy Burgess. When Philby gets wind that Maclean is about to be arrested, he dispatches Burgess to warn him and both defect to the Soviet Union. Philby is thoroughly investigated and while there is a general consensus that he too is a Russian spy, there is no concrete proof and, publicly at least, is cleared. Eight years later, in 1963, Philby also defects to the Soviet Union and it is revealed that he has been a KGB Colonel for over twenty years. Based on actual events.

Harold Adrian Russell "Kim" Philby (1 January 1912 – 11 May 1988) was a high-ranking member of British intelligence who worked as a double agent before defecting to the Soviet Union in 1963. He served as both an NKVD and KGB operative. In 1963, Philby was revealed to be a member of the spy ring now known as the Cambridge Five, the other members of which were Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt and, possibly, John Cairncross. Of the five, Philby is believed to have been most successful in providing secret information to the Soviet Union. Harold Adrian Russell "Kim" Philby (1 January 1912 – 11 May 1988) was a high-ranking member of British intelligence who worked as a double agent before defecting to the Soviet Union in 1963. He served as both an NKVD and KGB operative.
In 1963, Philby was revealed to be a member of the spy ring now known as the Cambridge Five, the other members of which were Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt and, possibly, John Cairncross. Of the five, Philby is believed to have been most successful in providing secret information to the Soviet Union. His activities were moderated only by Joseph Stalin's fears that he was secretly on Britain's side. Philby was an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from 1946 to 1965.

Fiction based on actual events
Philby, Burgess and MacLean a Granada TV drama written by Ian Curteis in 1977, covers the period of the late 1940s, when British intelligence investigated Maclean until 1955 when the British government cleared Philby because it did not have enough evidence to convict him.
Philby has a key role in Mike Ripley's short story Gold Sword published in 'John Creasey's Crime Collection 1990' which was chosen as BBC Radio 4's Afternoon Story to mark the 50th anniversary of D-Day on 6 June 1994.
A character modeled on Philby appears in the 2006 spy film The Good Sheperd. Billy Crudup plays Archibald "Arch" Cummings, a British intelligence officer who eventually defects to the Soviet Union.
Cambridge Spies, a 2003 four-part BBC drama, recounts the lives of Philby, Burgess, Blunt and Maclean from their Cambridge days in the 1930s through the defection of Burgess and Maclean in 1951. Philby is played by Toby Stephens.

Speculative fiction
One of the earliest appearances of Philby as a character in fiction was in the 1974 Gentleman Traitor by Alan Williams, in which Philby goes back to working for British intelligence in the 1970s.
In the 1981 Ted Allbeury novel The Other Side of Silence, an elderly Philby arouses suspicion when he states his desire to return to England.[75]
The 1984 Frederick Forsyth novel The Fourth Protocol features an elderly Philby's involvement in a plot to trigger a nuclear explosion in Britain. In the novel, Philby is a much more influential and connected figure in his Moscow exile than he apparently was in reality.[76]
In the 1987 adaptation of the novel, also named The Fourth Protocol, Philby is portrayed by Michael Bilton. In contradiction of historical fact, he is murdered by the KGB in the opening scene.
In the 2000 Doctor Who novel Endgame, the Doctor travels to London in 1951 and matches wits with Philby and the rest of the Cambridge Five.
The Tim Powers novel Declare (2001) is partly based on unexplained aspects of Philby's life, providing a supernatural context for his behaviour.[77]

British double agent Kim Philby detailed his life of betrayal and the ease with which he was able to pass secrets to his Soviet controllers in newly-discovered video footage broadcast by the BBC on Monday (April 4).
Philby was one of the Soviet Union's most successful spies who penetrated the heart of the British establishment and passed secrets back to Moscow for three decades, part of a ring of British double agents recruited in the 1930s.
The video, discovered by the BBC in the official archives of the Stasi, the former East German Intelligence Service, shows Philby, who defected to Moscow in 1963 and died there in 1988, lecturing Soviet spies in 1981 about his life as an agent.
"Dear Comrades," he begins, delivering his lecture to a rapt audience in his upper class English accent.
Philby said he became interested in communism while at Cambridge University, and explained how he was recruited by Moscow in the 1930s to infiltrate Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, the foreign spy agency now known as MI6, the BBC said.
He disclosed how easy it was to steal secrets as he began to rise through MI6's ranks.
"Every evening I left the office with a big briefcase full of reports that I had written myself, full of files and actual documents from the archive," Philby said.
"I used to hand them to my Soviet contact in the evening. The next morning I would get the files back, the contents having been photographed and early the next morning I would put them back in their place. That I did regularly year in year out."
The shadowy world and double-dealing of Philby and others in the "Cambridge Five" spy ring - such as Anthony Blunt, Guy Burgess, Donald Maclean - has long fascinated British audiences.
In one excerpt from the Stasi lecture, Philby detailed how he was ordered to undermine his boss so he could take over as head of an MI6 section responsible for unmasking Soviet agents, calling it a "very, very dirty story".
"After all, our work does imply getting dirty hands from time to time," he said. "So I set about the business of removing my own chief. You oughtn't listen to this," he told the East German spies, provoking laughter.
Philby, stationed in Washington as the liaison officer between the CIA and MI6 from 1949-51, said he escaped detection for so long because he was part of the British governing class system. Many MI6 colleagues had much to lose as they had been involved in his recruitment and promotion, he said.
He fled to Moscow in 1963 when new evidence of his work for the Soviet Union arose. He alleged he was able to escape from Beirut because the MI6 agent sent to watch him was an avid skier and had gone off to the Lebanese mountains after hearing news of a snowfall.
Philby's hour-long address ends with simple advice to the spies: 'Deny everything'.
"My advice to you is to tell all your agents that they are never to confess," said Philby, who died in Moscow in 1988 aged 76.

The book reveals the feelings Philby had about the Soviet Union under former leaders Leonid Brezhnev and Mikhail Gorbachev.
Philby's wife Rufina compiled the book, putting together her husband's memoirs as well as her own reminiscences of their life together in the Soviet Union.
Kim Philby, one of Britain's most controversial figures, didn't live long enough to see the collapse of the system that he risked everything for.
Philby was one of the Cambridge Five group of British double agents. Along with Anthony Burgess and Donald Maclean, Philby worked for Soviet intelligence during and after the war.
Philby spent the last years of his life in the Soviet Union with his second wife, Rufina.
Now, almost ten years after her husband's death, Rufina Philby has succeeded in publishing the full, uncensored version of Philby's memoirs.
Ironically, Philby's book 'My Silent War' was published in the West several years ago but this is the first opportunity Russian readers will have to read their hero's reminiscences.
In the book, Philby complains about life under Soviet party chief Leonid Brezhnev, an apparent taboo for any author.
His frank account didn't even fit the glasnost policies pursued by the Soviet Union's last president Mikhail Gorbachev.
Brushing off accusations of betrayal, Philby's widow said her husband was an idealist who sought to improve life both for the Soviet Union and for the British people.

"He never doubted and never considered himself a traitor. So my answer is no. As I've explained already he was always on one side, to help the people, to help the best future. He tried to change the world for the best."

But even Philby's former colleagues admit he had some doubts about his work for the Soviet Union and had to adapt to the Soviet way of life to survive.

"Sometimes he was seen after a bottle of whiskey, of course he then became a little bit too sincere and he knew that I am friendly with him and we shared a lot of discontent with the regime. He was open but to an extent but when the new KGB boss Mr Kritchkov appeared, he was smiling and saying good words. So he became, as all of us, he became part of the system actually, who had to adapt themselves if he wanted to survive."

With very few mysteries of Soviet spying left untold, the book may have come too late to be fully appreciated by the Russian public.
Its print run of merely 5,000 copies reflects the interest the publishers expect it will generate.

Philby was one of the Cambridge Five group of British double agents. Along with Anthony Burgess and Donald Maclean, Philby worked for Soviet intelligence during and after the war.
Philby spent the last years of his life in the Soviet Union with his second wife, Rufina.
Now, almost ten years after her husband's death, Rufina Philby has succeeded in publishing the full, uncensored version of Philby's memoirs.
Ironically, Philby's book 'My Silent War' was published in the West several years ago but this is the first opportunity Russian readers will have to read their hero's reminiscences.
In the book, Philby complains about life under Soviet party chief Leonid Brezhnev, an apparent taboo for any author.
His frank account didn't even fit the glasnost policies pursued by the Soviet Union's last president Mikhail Gorbachev.
Brushing off accusations of betrayal, Philby's widow said her husband was an idealist who sought to improve life both for the Soviet Union and for the British people.

But even Philby's former colleagues admit he had some doubts about his work for the Soviet Union and had to adapt to the Soviet way of life to survive.

"Sometimes he was seen after a bottle of whiskey, of course he then became a little bit too sincere and he knew that I am friendly with him and we shared a lot of discontent with the regime. He was open but to an extent but when the new KGB boss Mr Kritchkov appeared, he was smiling and saying good words. So he became, as all of us, he became part of the system actually, who had to adapt themselves if he wanted to survive."

With very few mysteries of Soviet spying left untold, the book may have come too late to be fully appreciated by the Russian public.
Its print run of merely 5,000 copies reflects the interest the publishers expect it will generate.
But fittingly the book-launch comes just a day before KGB Day.

James Jesus Angleton's boyhood was spent in Milan, Italy, where his family moved after his father bought NCR's Italian subsidiary. He then studied as a boarder at Malvern College in England before going to Yale. The young Angleton was a poet and, as a Yale undergraduate, editor, with Reed Whittemore, of the Yale literary magazine Furioso, which published many of the best-known poets of the inter-war period, including William Carlos Williams, E. E. Cummings and Ezra Pound. He carried on an extensive correspondence with Pound, Cummings and T. S. Eliot, among others, and was particularly influenced by William Empson, author of Seven Types of Ambiguity.[3] He was trained in the New Criticism at Yale by Maynard Mack and others, chiefly Norman Holmes Pearson, a founder of American Studies, and briefly studied law at Harvard.[4]
He joined the US Army in March, 1943, and in July married Cicely d'Autremont, a Vassar alumna from Tucson, Arizona. Together, they had three children: James C. Angleton, Guru Sangat Kaur Khalsa, and Siri Hari Kaur Angleton-Khalsa. They lived in the Rock Spring neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia until Angleton's death in 1987.
Returning to Washington, he was employed by the various successor organizations to the OSS, eventually becoming one of the founder-officers of the Central Intelligence Agency. In May 1949, he was made head of Staff A of the CIA's Office of Special Operations, where he was responsible for the collection of foreign intelligence and liaison with the CIA's counterpart organizations. Beginning in 1951, Angleton was responsible for liaison with Israel's Mossad and Shin Bet agencies, "the Israeli desk", crucial relationships that he managed for the remainder of his career. During the next five years, Angleton helped put in place the structure of the new Agency and participated, to some extent, in the "rollback" operations, associated with Frank Wisner in Albania, Poland and other countries, concerning all of which Angleton counseled caution and all of which failed. He worked particularly closely with Kim Philby, who being groomed to head the Secret Intelligence Service, was also in Washington. The Angletons developed a varied social set in Washington, including professional acquaintances like the Philbys, poets, painters and journalists. In 1951, Philby's colleagues Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean defected to Moscow. Philby was expelled from Washington, suspected of having tipped them off to imminent exposure based on decoded Soviet communications from the Venona project.
Three books dealing with Angleton take these matters as their central theme: Tom Mangold's Cold Warrior: James Jesus Angleton: The CIA's Master Spy Hunter, David C. Martin's Wilderness of Mirrors: Intrigue, Deception, and the Secrets that Destroyed Two of the Cold War's Most Important Agents and David Wise's Molehunt: The Secret Search for Traitors that Shattered the CIA. Tim Weiner's Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA paints Angleton as an incompetent alcoholic.[11] These views have been challenged by Mark Riebling in Wedge: The Secret War between the FBI and CIA.

Throughout the Cold War both sides sought intelligence about their opponents using spies, satellites and other means. For political reasons, scientists working on the Manhattan Project provided nuclear secrets to the Soviets. British agents George Blake and Kim Philby passed on to the Soviet Union the identities of Western intelligence assets, and the presence of the Berlin Tunnel. Conversely, Soviet Colonel Oleg Penkovsky gave the West vital details of Soviet nuclear vulnerabilities. Intelligence services are also used to silence dissent, in particular in East Germany. After the Cold War an investigation revealed the Soviet Union had been aware of a number of double agents operating in its midst from information provided by a CIA mole, Aldrich Ames. One such agent, Oleg Gordievsky, managed to flee the Soviet Union, but Adolf Tolkachev and Dmitri Polyakov were arrested, tried and executed. Interviewees include Markus Wolf, Ted Hall, Oleg Kalugin, George Blake, Yuri Modin and Aldrich Ames (who was serving a life sentence). The pre-credits scene shows Polyakov being arrested by the KGB.
"Spies (1944-94)" recalls East-West espionage battles. "For us it was war," says East German spy chief Markus Wolf. Also interviewed: convicted U.S. spies Aldrich Ames and Ted Hall; former CIA head Stansfield Turner; and KGB operatives, one of whom admits: "I love espionage because of the smell of adventure."
