Imam Malik ibn Anas was the Imam of all times as more than seventy scholars of Medina testified to his strong hold in religious scholarship. He founded the second school of legal jurisprudence and used to teach jurisprudence and hadith sciences in the mosque of the Prophet in Medina. He was a luminary scholar who was meticulous about the hadiths he transmitted as he used to apply strict measures to validate the authenticity of hadith.
In the previous lecture, Dr. Hisham Hawasli completed the Biography of Imam Abu Hanifah. In today's lecture, he starts the Biography of Imam Malik ibn Anas, one of the most highly respected scholars of fiqh in Islam.

Malik ibn Anas ibn Malik ibn `Amr, al-Imam, Abu `Abd Allah al-Humyari al-Asbahi al-Madani (93-179), the Shaykh of Islam, Proof of the Community, Imam of the Abode of Emigration, and Knowledgeable Scholar of Madina predicted by the Prophet. The second of the four major mujtahid imams, whose school filled North Africa, al-Andalus, much of Egypt, and some of al-Sham, Yemen, Sudan, Iraq, and Khurasan. He is the author of al-Muwatta' ("The Approved"), formed of the sound narrations of the Prophet from the people of the Hijaz together with the sayings of the Companions, the Followers, and those after them. It was hailed by al-Shafi`i as the soundest book on earth after the Qur'an, nearest book on earth to the Qur'an, most correct book on earth after the Qur'an, and most beneficial book on earth after the Qur'an according to four separate narrations. Malik said: "I showed my book to seventy jurists of Madina, and every single one of them approved me for it (kulluhum wâta'ani `alayh), so I named it 'The Approved'." Imam al-Bukhari said that the soundest of all chains of transmission was "Malik, from Nafi`, from Ibn `Umar." The scholars of hadith call it the Golden Chain, and there are eighty narrations with this chain in the Muwatt

'Abdu'r-Rahman ibn al-Qasim
This scholar was one of the companions of Malik who had a tremendous influence in recording his school since he was the source for Sahnun in his record of the teaching of Malik. In the school of Malik he has the same position as Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ash-Shaybani has in the school of Abu Hanifa. There is a complete correspondence between the two men. Both of them transmitted the school and made free use of ijtihad. Ibn al-Qasim had opinions which differed from those of his shaykh, Malik, so that it was said that he was dominated by opinion. Ibn 'Abdu'l-Barr said of him, "He was a faqih dominated by opinion. He was a righteous, poor, steadfast man."
He met Malik after Ibn Wahb and kept his company for a long time -- about twenty years. He learned his fiqh. He also met al-Layth, 'Abdu'l-'Aziz ibn al-Majishun and Muslim ibn Khalid al-Zanji. Many people related from him and consulted him about Malik's fatwas. Ibn Wahb used to say, "If you want this business -- meaning the fiqh of Malik -- you must have Ibn al-Qasim. He is unique in it." His transmission of the Muwatta' is the soundest and Sahnun learned the contents of the Mudawwana, the most comprehensive collection of Maliki fiqh, from him. Thus he can be considered as the main transmitter of Maliki fiqh, for the Mudawwana is its chief source.
He was a generous and abstemious man. He did not accept the stipends of any ruler and he said, "There is no good in the proximity of rulers." He frequented them at first, but then he kept away from them. He died in 191 at the age of 63.

Mālik ibn Anas ibn Mālik ibn Abī 'Āmir al-Asbahī (Arabic مالك بن أنس) (c. 711 – 795) (93 AH – 179 AH ) is known as "Imam Malik," the "Sheikh of Islam", the "Proof of the Community," and "Imam of the Abode of Emigration." He was one of the most highly respected scholars of fiqh in Sunni Islam. Imam Shafi`i, who was one of Malik's students for nine years and a scholarly giant in his own right, stated, "when scholars are mentioned, Malik is the star." The Maliki Madhab, named after Malik, is one of the four schools of jurisprudence that are followed by Sunni Muslims to this day.
His full name was Abu Abdullah Mālik ibn Anas ibn Mālik Ibn Abī 'Āmir Ibn 'Amr Ibnul-Hārith Ibn Ghaimān Ibn Khuthail Ibn 'Amr Ibnul-Haarith.
Malik was born the son of Anas ibn Malik (not the Sahabi) and Aaliyah bint Shurayk al-Azdiyya in Medina circa 711. His family was originally from the al-Asbahi tribe of Yemen, but his great grandfather Abu 'Amir relocated the family to Medina after converting to Islam in the second year after hijra (623). According to Al-Muwatta, he was tall, heavyset, imposing of stature, very fair, with white hair and beard but bald, with a huge beard and blue eyes.

Suhaib Webb is a contemporary American-Muslim educator, activist, and lecturer. He is currently the imam of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center (ISBCC), the largest mosque in the New England area.
He was born William Webb in 1972 in Oklahoma to a Christian family, including a grandfather who served as a preacher. At age 14, he lost interest in religion going through a self-described spiritual crisis. He also began engaging in delinquency by joining a local gang, was involved in a drive by shooting, and became a successful local Hip-Hop DJ and producer, making records with various artists.
After converting to Islam in 1992, Webb left his career as a DJ and studied at the University of Central Oklahoma, where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Education. He also studied privately under a Senegalese Sheikh, learning enough Islam and Arabic to become a community leader in Oklahoma City, where he was hired as Imam at The Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma City. He simultaneously started teaching at Mercy School, an Islamic K-12 school in Oklahoma City.

He is the author of al-Muwatta' ("The Approved"), formed of the sound narrations of the Prophet from the people of the Hijaz together with the sayings of the Companions, the Followers, and those after them. It was hailed by al-Shafi`i as the soundest book on earth after the Qur'an, nearest book on earth to the Qur'an, most correct book on earth after the Qur'an, and most beneficial book on earth after the Qur'an according to four separate narrations. Malik said: "I showed my book to seventy jurists of Madina, and every single one of them approved me for it (kulluhum wâta'ani `alayh), so I named it 'The Approved'." Imam al-Bukhari said that the soundest of all chains of transmission was "Malik, from Nafi`, from Ibn `Umar." The scholars of hadith call it the Golden Chain, and there are eighty narrations with this chain in the Muwatt

He met Malik after Ibn Wahb and kept his company for a long time -- about twenty years. He learned his fiqh. He also met al-Layth, 'Abdu'l-'Aziz ibn al-Majishun and Muslim ibn Khalid al-Zanji. Many people related from him and consulted him about Malik's fatwas. Ibn Wahb used to say, "If you want this business -- meaning the fiqh of Malik -- you must have Ibn al-Qasim. He is unique in it." His transmission of the Muwatta' is the soundest and Sahnun learned the contents of the Mudawwana, the most comprehensive collection of Maliki fiqh, from him. Thus he can be considered as the main transmitter of Maliki fiqh, for the Mudawwana is its chief source.
He was a generous and abstemious man. He did not accept the stipends of any ruler and he said, "There is no good in the proximity of rulers." He frequented them at first, but then he kept away from them. He died in 191 at the age of 63.

Revered for his great love of the Sunna of the Chosen One (a.s.), Imam Malik dedicated his life to preserving the great treasure of Prophetic wisdom for future generations. As the honoured scholar of the City of Light, he knew that the Sunna was to be learned not only from the Hadith, but from the lived practice of the great people of Madina. His fiqh is therefore rooted in community practice, which gives it great flexibility and humanity. Converti à l'Islâm suite à un voyage au Maroc en 1985, 'Abd-Allâh Althaparro est ensuite parti étudier en 1991 les sciences religieuses à Damas à l'université abou nnôur. Il y demeura 6 ans et y étudia auprès de professeurs tels que chaykh Mouhammad Azzouhayliyy, chaykh Mouhammad Bachîr Almoufachchî, chaykh Nôur addîn 'Itr, chaykh 'Abd Alhâdî Kharsah et d'autres. Déçu de la méthode d'enseignement occidentalisée des facultés de charî'ah modernes, il décida, après avoir obtenu avec mention jayyid une maîtrise de droit islamique en 1997, de partir étudier en Mauritanie qui est l'un des rares pays où l'enseignement traditionnel a été préservé. Il resta tout d'abord quelques mois dans l'école traditionnelle de oumm alqourâ où enseignait l'érudit savant chaykh Mouhammad Sâlim Al'addôud, puis il alla dans l'école traditionnelle d'Annabâghiyah où il étudia jusqu'en 2007 auprès de l'érudit savant chaykh Mouhammad Fâl al'alawiyy, plus connu sous le surnom de chaykh Abbâh, et des autres professeurs de l'école, chaykh Mouhammad Sa'îd, chaykh Alamânah, chaykh Mouhammad Bouttâr, chaykh Moukhtâr et chaykh 'Arafât, qui ont tous été formés directement par chaykh Abbâh.
Pendant les 10 années qu'il passa en Mauritanie, il étudia intégralement les ouvrages suivants : l'âjourrôumiyyah et l'alfiyyah d'Ibn Mâlik (grammaire arabe), tafsîr aljalâlayn (exégèse coranique), noukhbah alfikr d'ibn Hajar (moustalah alhadîth), alwaraqât d'Aljouwayniyy (ousôul alfiqh), ainsi que, pour ce qui est du fiqh mâlikite, le moukhtasar d'Alakhdariyy, almourchid almou'în d'ibn 'Âchir, la risâlah d'ibn abî Zayd, et surtout le moukhtasar de Khalîl qui est l'ouvrage central de référence de l'école mâlikite.
