Giotto di Bondone (1266/7 – January 8, 1337), known as Giotto (Italian: [ˈdʒɔtto]), was an Italian painter and architect from Florence in the late Middle Ages. He is generally considered the first in a line of great artists who contributed to the Renaissance.
Giotto's contemporary, the banker and chronicler Giovanni Villani, wrote that Giotto was "the most sovereign master of painting in his time, who drew all his figures and their postures according to nature. And he was given a salary by the Comune of Florence in virtue of his talent and excellence."
The late-16th century biographer Giorgio Vasari describes Giotto as making a decisive break with the prevalent Byzantine style and as initiating "the great art of painting as we know it today, introducing the technique of drawing accurately from life, which had been neglected for more than two hundred years."
Giotto's masterwork is the decoration of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, also known as the Arena Chapel, completed around 1305. This fresco cycle depicts the life of the Virgin and the life of Christ. It is regarded as one of the supreme masterpieces of the Early Renaissance. That Giotto painted the Arena Chapel and that he was chosen by the Comune of Florence in 1334 to design the new campanile (bell tower) of the Florence Cathedral are among the few certainties of his biography. Almost every other aspect of it is subject to controversy: his birthdate, his birthplace, his appearance, his apprenticeship, the order in which he created his works, whether or not he painted the famous frescoes at Assisi, and his burial place.

IMAGES AND MUSIC USED FOR EDUCATION AL PURPOSES! :D MUSIC: Mozart's Symphony #40- from "50 Classical Music Essentials" Giotto was born in Italy around 1266. He was an artist, architect, and generally a pretty accomplished fellow with a penchant for ugly head-ware. According to the biography by Giorgio Vasari, Giotto started out as just a humble shepherd boy, who liked to draw sheep... on rocks. A really awesome painter from Florence, named Cimabue, found his rock drawings to be awesome, and took him on as an apprentice. From then on, Giotto was a total tool. One time he painted such a lifelike fly on the face of the painting that Cimabue was working on, and that the poor guy was trying to brush the fly off the painting for who knows how long. One time the pope sent a messenger to Giott...

Peter Lieberman (Harvard University, Department of Romance Languages and Literatures) interviews Marvin Trachtenberg (New York University, Institute of Fine Arts) about his book "Building-in-Time: From Giotto to Alberti and Modern Oblivion" (Yale University Press). Marvin Trachtenberg rewrites the history of medieval and Renaissance architecture in Italy and recasts the turn to modernity in new terms, those of temporality and its role in architectural theory and practice. Recovering this lost element of the deep architectural past allows us also to see the present in a new way: that temporality is not any neutral or secondary factor in modern architecture culture, but an epistemic condition that silently affects all production and experience of the built environment.
"Giotto...took a sheet of paper, and with a pen dipped in red, fixing his arm firmly against his side to make a compass of it, with a turn of his hand he made a circle so perfect that it was a marvel to see it" (from Giorgio Vasari, Lives of the Artists, 1550) An interview with Toronto artist Nicole Collins about her circle-drawing project entitled 'Giotto's O.' Twenty-five years ago, during the night of 13-14 March 1986, the Giotto spacecraft swept within 600 km of Comet Halley, obtaining the first ever close-up images of a comet nucleus. The encounter revealed the first evidence of organic material in a comet and still today, much of what we know about comets comes from the pioneering Giotto mission.
Horizon and The Sky at Night coverage of the Giotto encounter with Comet Halley.
You got the ticket babe
Yes yes yes you know
The desert could not hold
All the love that I have
In my heart for you
If I could spread it out across the sea
You know my love would cover it all
Ain't that a lotta love
For two hearts to have and hold
Now if the cooks in the kitchen
Had a dress as tight as yours
They would not need a fire
Ain't a word I could say
Just to describe your fine look
That I love and love and desire
Ain't that a lotta love
For two hearts to have and hold
You got a smile
You got a kiss
You got a heart
And you got a lotta love yeah
A lotta love yeah
Ain't that a lotta love
For two hearts to have and hold
Now if the bees only knew
How sweet your love was
They'd pack up their honey comb
If the birds ever heard how sweet your voice was baby,
They'd pack up their song yeah
Ain't that a lotta love
For two hearts to have and hold
Ain't that a lotta love
For two hearts to have and hold
Baby baby ain't that kindness
Baby baby ain't that kindness
Woman woman ain't that a kindness
Somebody somebody tell me
We got to get it all together people
We got to bring it all together
We got to bring it all together people
We got to bring it all together
You know the desert could not hold
All the love that I have
In my heart for you
