Planning a trip to Berlin? Learn about Museumsinsel, or Museum Island, in this travel video. It includes five of the most important museums in the city.
One of Berlin’s biggest attractions is its world-class museums.
There are so many that it can be hard to know where to start, but Museum Island is always a good choice. This group of museums includes five of the most important ones in the city.
The New Museum contains a collection of prehistoric and ancient Egyptian art and artifacts. You can even see the famous bust of Queen Nefertiti there.
The Old Museum is worth seeing just for the building itself. The Neoclassical design was done by the famous Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
Inside the museum is an impressive collection of Roman and Greek antiquities.
The Pergamon Museum also has an extensive collection of antiquities, as well as Islamic and Middle Eastern art and artifacts. Most famous is the massive Pergamon Altar, which the museum is named after.
For Germany’s best collection of Byzantine art, head over to the the Bode Museum. This museum also houses a collection of sculptures dating from the Middle Ages to the 18th-century.
The Old National Gallery is home to one of Germany’s biggest collections of 19th-century European sculptures and paintings. Works by masters such as Cézanne, Manet, and Monet can be seen here.
In one day on Museum Island, you can see everything from ancient Egyptian sculptures to 19th-century European paintings: it’s a sample of Berlin’s best.

Das Pergamonmuseum wurde nach den Entwürfen von Alfred Messel durch Ludwig Hoffmann zwischen 1910 und 1930 errichtet. Zuvor, von 1901 bis 1909, stand an gleicher Stelle ein kleinerer Bau. In ihm waren zunächst die bedeutenden Ausgrabungsfunde der Berliner Museen, wie die zwischen 1878 und 1886 geborgenen Friesplatten des Pergamonaltars, untergebracht. Ungenügende Fundamentierungen führten jedoch bald zu Schäden am Gebäude, so dass es noch vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg abgerissen werden musste.
Das neue, größere Pergamonmuseum wurde als Dreiflügelanlage konzipiert. Heute beherbergt es drei Museen: die Antikensammlung, das Vorderasiatische Museum und das Museum für Islamische Kunst. Durch die imposanten Rekonstruktionen archäologischer Bauensembles - Pergamonaltar, Markttor von Milet und Ischtar-Tor mit Prozessionsstraße von Babylon und Mschatta-Fassade - ist das Museum weltweit bekannt geworden.
Im Rahmen des Masterplans Museumsinsel wird unter der Leitung des Architekturbüros Oswald Mathias Ungers das Museum ab 2008 abschnittsweise saniert. Von einer Gesamtschließung des Gebäudes wird abgesehen.

The Pergamon Museum was built between 1910 and 1930 under the supervision of Ludwig Hoffmann, working according to designs by Alfred Messel. From 1901 to 1909, a smaller building had occupied the same spot. This building originally accommodated the important excavation finds of the Berlin Museums, such as the frieze of the Pergamon Altar which was recovered between 1878 and 1886. However, insufficient foundations soon led to damages in the building structure and the building had to be demolished even before the outbreak of the First World War.
The new, larger Pergamon Museum was conceived as a "Dreiflügelanlage". Today, it accommodates three separate museums: the Collection of Classical Antiquities, the Museum of the Ancient Near East and the Museum of Islamic Art. The monumental reconstruction of archaeological building ensembles - such as the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate including the Processional Way of Babylon and the Mshatta Façade - has made the Pergamonmuseum world-famous.
Following the schedule of the Masterplan Museum Island, the restoration of the Pergamon Museum will begin in 2008 and will be carried out by stages under the auspices of the architectural office of Oswald Mathias Ungers. A total closure of the building will be avoided.

Museum Island (German: Museumsinsel) is the name of the northern half of an island in the Spree river in the central Mitte district of Berlin, Germany, the site of the old city of Cölln. It is so called for the complex of five internationally significant museums, all part of the Berlin State Museums, that occupy the island's northern part:
In 1999, the museum complex was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
A first exhibition hall was erected in 1797 at the suggestion of the archaeologist Aloys Hirt. In 1822, Schinkel designed the plans for the Altes Museum to house the royal Antikensammlung, the arrangement of the collection was overseen by Wilhelm von Humboldt. The island, originally a residential area, was dedicated to "art and science" by King Frederick William IV of Prussia in 1841. Further extended under succeeding Prussian kings, the museum's collections of art and archeology were turned into a public foundation after 1918. They are today maintained by the Berlin State Museums branch of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.

Emma-Lee Moss (born c. 1984), known by her stage name Emmy the Great, is a London-based singer-songwriter. She has released two albums, First Love and Virtue.
Moss was born in Hong Kong to an English father and a Chinese mother. Interested in music from a young age, she used to go by train to her nearest Tower Records shop so that she could buy the only non-Chinese music they had and, as a result, she developed a liking for bands such as Weezer, The Smashing Pumpkins, and The Lemonheads.
While in Hong Kong, she attended primary school in Kowloon.
She emigrated with her family to London at the age of 12. She attended the Michael Hall Rudolf Steiner School in West Sussex.[citation needed]
Moss is dating Tim Wheeler of the band Ash, as revealed on 6 Music's coverage of Glastonbury Festival 2011, where they did an interview, followed by a cover of a Pixies track together.
She has performed with indie folk groups Lightspeed Champion and Noah and the Whale, but is primarily known for her solo work. She first emerged under the name Emmy the Great in 2004, when she released a series of free demos over the internet. She says the moniker came about when "[she] wanted to be a backing singer and [...] wanted to have something to hand to people... ‘Emmy’ is a name they called me at university, which I hated, and ‘the Great’ I added on because I hated ‘Emmy’ so much." She formed a backing band which currently includes Euan Hinshelwood of Younghusband, Glenn Kerrigan of So Say So, Tom Rogerson of Three Trapped Tigers and Ric Hollingbery of Pengilly's, and has previously included members of Noah and the Whale and Johnny Flynn.

Das Pergamonmuseum wurde nach den Entwürfen von Alfred Messel durch Ludwig Hoffmann zwischen 1910 und 1930 errichtet. Zuvor, von 1901 bis 1909, stand an gleicher Stelle ein kleinerer Bau. One of Berlin’s biggest attractions is its world-class museums.
There are so many that it can be hard to know where to start, but Museum Island is always a good choice. This group of museums includes five of the most important ones in the city.
The New Museum contains a collection of prehistoric and ancient Egyptian art and artifacts. You can even see the famous bust of Queen Nefertiti there.
The Old Museum is worth seeing just for the building itself. The Neoclassical design was done by the famous Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
Inside the museum is an impressive collection of Roman and Greek antiquities.
The Pergamon Museum also has an extensive collection of antiquities, as well as Islamic and Middle Eastern art and artifacts. Most famous is the massive Pergamon Altar, which the museum is named after.
For Germany’s best collection of Byzantine art, head over to the the Bode Museum. This museum also houses a collection of sculptures dating from the Middle Ages to the 18th-century.
The Old National Gallery is home to one of Germany’s biggest collections of 19th-century European sculptures and paintings. Works by masters such as Cézanne, Manet, and Monet can be seen here.
In one day on Museum Island, you can see everything from ancient Egyptian sculptures to 19th-century European paintings: it’s a sample of Berlin’s best.

However, insufficient foundations soon led to damages in the building structure and the building had to be demolished even before the outbreak of the First World War.
The new, larger Pergamon Museum was conceived as a "Dreiflügelanlage". Today, it accommodates three separate museums: the Collection of Classical Antiquities, the Museum of the Ancient Near East and the Museum of Islamic Art. The monumental reconstruction of archaeological building ensembles - such as the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate including the Processional Way of Babylon and the Mshatta Façade - has made the Pergamonmuseum world-famous.
Following the schedule of the Masterplan Museum Island, the restoration of the Pergamon Museum will begin in 2008 and will be carried out by stages under the auspices of the architectural office of Oswald Mathias Ungers. A total closure of the building will be avoided.

'Comedy' Guide to Berlin Museum Island - Pergamon Museum, Neues & Altes
One of the things to do in Berlin is go to the World Heritage Site of Museum Island... assuming of course that you like museums! The East Side Gallery is the longest remaining strip of the of the former dividing wall between East and West Berlin. Today the 1.3 kilometer long wall stands as a memorial to freedom and it is covered in art and graffiti. Right now we're visiting Brandenburg Gate. This gate dates back to the 18th Century. We're here at Tiergarten, one of the biggest parks in the city. MauerPark is a hipster hangout. If you head over to the Bear Pit you can catch some karaoke and musical performances. If you want to spot some cool street art, then head over to Friedrichshain. You can't come to Berlin and not eat a Currywurst! This is the city's most popular fast food snack. The sausage is served with a ketchup and curry powder concoction. Up next we're at the Reichstag building which has a pretty cool glass dome on top. This dome is actually open to visitors and it offers 360 degree views of the city. Today we're visiting Tempelhof, a re-purposed airport here in Berlin for leisure activities and sports. If you enjoy museums and art galleries you'll want to visit Berlin's Museum Island. They actually have five different museums here and if you get a daily pass for 18 Euros you get access to all five. We are now visiting the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin. It is also known as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Charlottenburg Palace is the largest palace in Berlin and the only surviving royal residence in the city. Checkpoint Charlie was one of the crossing points between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. Located near Alexanderplatz, The Berlin TV Tower offers a great lookout over the city. Chocolate! Ritter Sport is a chocolate brand that is sold all over Germany, and while in Berlin we couldn't resist sampling a few of the different varieties. Berlin Cathedral is located on Museum Island and it's one of the most beautiful churches in the city. If Currywurst is to your liking, you'll want to check out this quirky museum devoted to Berlin's favorite sausage. Renting a bike is a great way to get around the city. Most places will rent out bikes at 10 Euros per day. For a leisurely afternoon, hop on a boat and enjoy a tour down the River Spree. Of course, you cannot come to Berlin and not eat a Wurst or a sausage. The Friedrichshain flea market takes place every Sunday and it's a great place for people watching and a little browsing. The Germans sure know how to enjoy a hearty breakfast, and we recommend you try it too.
We couldn't resist visiting yet another cat cafe while we were in Berlin.
While in Berlin we enjoyed a hearty meal of Schnitzel. It's quite easy to get around Berlin using the U-bahn and S-bahn system. In Berlin, there is a big Turkish population and that means there is awesome Turkish street food. And that's Berlin for you! A city that has risen from the ashes of the war, which is now bursting with art, music, and life.

Funchal is the capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira and is situated in a natural, picturesque bay, surrounded by steep mountain slopes. With churches, palaces, mansions, museums and magnificent gardens, it is a city of both character and history. The Museum Of Religious Art is to be found in the former bishop’s palace. The sugar trade with Antwerp meant that paintings and other works of art could be used as payment. Madeira has long been famous for its wine, stored in wooden barrels to mature and then exported all over the world. In the old rooms of a former monastery, it is pressed, matured and celebrated. At the beginning of a valley, São Vicente lies hidden beyond the steep slopes of the northern coastline. The tastefully restored centre of the village contains a seventeenth century church with a Baroque interior. There are gilded carvings, tile pictures and paintings on the altar. At an amazing acute angle, the gondola from the mountain station below the village of Achadas Da Cruz travels three hundred metres down to the coast and back. This most beautiful Baroque church on the north coast was established in São Jorge. Its external simplicity gives little hint of its internal beauty: gilded wood carvings and illusionist paintings adorn the church and its altar. To the east of Madeira is the natural bay of Machico, the oldest settlement on the island. Today, Madeira’s third largest city extends from the coast to the hills of the wide and fertile valley of the Machico River whose inhabitants live from the cultivation of fruit, vineyards and fishing. Its extraordinary landscapes and exotic fragrances have been captivating visitors for centuries. Madeira, wild beauty amid the Atlantic Ocean!
