Andre Villas-Boas Post Match Interview - Aston Villa 0 - 4 Tottenham [24.09.2013]
24.09.2013 Jermain Defoe scored twice as Tottenham powered past Aston Villa and into the fourth round of the League Cup. The England striker set Spurs on their way by glancing home Lewis Holtby's clever pass before completing the victory with a late finish. Paulinho and Nacer Chadli were also on the scoresheet as Tottenham dominated. However, Villa should have been awarded a penalty early in the second half when Nicklas Helenius was impeded by Jan Vertonghen. The visitors only led by a single goal when Danish striker Helenius nipped in front of Vertonghen and bizarrely had his shorts pulled down by the tumbling Belgian defender. However, much to the bemusement of Villa manager Paul Lambert, referee Jon Moss turned down the penalty appeals. That might have given Villa a way back into a match which Tottenham dominated, despite manager Andre Villas-Boas's pre-match assertions that it would be a risk for his players to play so soon after Sunday's victory over Cardiff. Only Vertonghen, Kyle Walker and Paulinho retained their places in the Spurs side as new boys Erik Lamela, a club record £25.7m signing from Roma, and Vlad Chiriches were given opportunities. And Defoe, who has now scored six goals in his three first-team starts this season, relished the clever balls being played in behind the defence by Lamela. Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer, making his second start of the season after a summer move from Norwich, kept his side in the game with a number of fine saves. But he could do nothing about Defoe's opener at the end of the first half as the striker deftly headed home Holtby's cute clip over the defence. Following Helenius's failure to win an early second-half penalty, Paulinho doubled Tottenham's lead when he lost his marker and poked in Holtby's corner at the near post. Villa winger Aleksandar Tonev forced Brad Friedel into a save with a stinging 25-yard shot but Tottenham completed their convincing win as the hosts tired. First Chadli latched on to a loose pass and rifled in at the near post before Defoe skipped around Steer to tap in his second of the night. Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert: On Nicklas Helenius getting his shorts pulled down: "That was a big moment. It thought it was a pen. I don't think anybody could believe it. It was a strange decision. "I didn't think there were four goals in that. We had a lot of players out injured and they were too much for us. But I couldn't fault the lads for effort. "We gave it a go in the second half and their second goal was a really poor goal from our point of view. "There are a couple of plus points from individual performances. Nathan Baker is coming back after injury. Marc Albrighton was excellent." Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas: "We've shown a great team spirit this year. The players are all buzzing for opportunities like this so most of them really performed tonight. "We have great strength in depth so it allows us to throw such a strong team on the pitch after playing just two days ago. "The best thing about this evening is that the players who came in responded well and respected the competition."- published: 24 Sep 2013

Tottenham vs Aston Villa (4-0) Highlights 2013 - Paul Lambert Post Match Interview
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert believes his side should have been awarded before Tottenham went on to score but stresses their are plenty of positives to take from the game. Lambert - We should have had a penalty Capital One Cup: Paulinho, Nacer Chadli and Jermain Defoe double help Spurs rout Villa Tottenham proved too classy for Aston Villa as they cruised to a 4-0 victory to reach the fourth round of the Capital One Cup. In the all-Premier League tie at Villa Park, a brace from Jermain Defoe, plus further goals from Paulinho and Nacer Chadli helped the four-time winners of the competition through in style. Andre Villas-Boas' side dominated the opening 45 minutes and they made their pressure pay on the stroke of half-time following a wonderful flowing move. Lewis Holtby's delightful chip into the area was flicked home by goal poacher Defoe. They doubled their lead just four minutes into the second period as an outswinging corner from the left struck Matt Lowton before ricocheting off Paulinho and past the helpless Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer at his near post. With four minutes remaining, a mistake in the middle of the park by Yacouba Sylla allowed Belgium winger Chadli to add a third. They completed the rout when another Sylla error gifted Defoe his second of the night and his sixth goal in only his third start for the club this season. The visitors made light of having to play twice in three days with their eighth victory in nine games. But the outcome hinged on a bizarre incident immediately after the restart, which Villa boss Paul Lambert was convinced should have reduced Tottenham to 10 men. Introduced for Libor Kozak at the interval, Nicklas Helenius got round the back of Jan Vertonghen as they chased Matt Lowton's forward pass into the box. In his desperation to recover the lost ground, Vertonghen stumbled and as he was falling made a grab for Helenius. The Belgian succeeded only in grabbing the striker's shorts, yanking them down to his knees just as he was about to shoot. Helenius carried on anyway, blasting over from an acute angle. To Lambert's disbelief, referee Jon Moss opted to give a goal-kick rather than a penalty that surely would have been accompanied by Vertonghen's exit. That Paulinho's goal came within two minutes of such a strange incident underlined it was not going to be Villa's night as Spurs successful start to the season continued. It also made it a successful night for their veteran former Villa keeper Brad Friedel as he kept a clean sheet.- published: 25 Sep 2013
