Hailed as a visionary by some and a con artist by others, Preston Tucker (1903-1956) was the man behind an innovative, futuristic-looking car that debuted amid great fanfare during the summer of 1948. Within just a couple of years, however, the Tucker Corporation had folded in the wake of suspicions about its founder's business practices.
With the post-war economy booming during the summer of 1948, American consumers were in a buying mood, especially for cars. But the people crowding dealers' showrooms were yearning for something more exciting than the offerings of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, whose designs seemed old-fashioned and unimaginative. Into this void stepped Preston Tucker, a brash entrepreneur and master of promotion who insisted that he had just what Americans wanted-"The Car of Tomorrow Today." His namesake automobile boasted a radical new aerodynamic look and a number of innovative safety features. At first, it seemed that Tucker had indeed tapped into the public's growing desire for a sleeker, safer car; his company was flooded with orders in a matter of just a few months. Ultimately, however, his inability to deliver on his promises cost him his business as well as his reputation.
Preston Thomas Tucker was born September 21, 1903, on a peppermint farm in rural Capac, Michigan. He grew up in the suburban Detroit community of Lincoln Park where, even as a child, he was fascinated by anything having to do with automobiles. He learned to drive at the age of 11 and quit school two years later to become an office boy for Cadillac. Tucker subsequently worked at a number of other automobile companies, including Ford, Studebaker, Chrysler, and Pierce-Arrow. Although he began his career as a mechanic and test driver, he eventually moved into sales after attending Detroit's Cass Technical High School.
During the 1930s, Tucker dabbled in a number of unsuccessful business ventures, most of them automotive-related. In 1935, for example, he teamed up with famed engine designer Harry A. Miller to build Indianapolis 500 race cars for Ford Motor Company. But none of the ten cars they completed managed to make it across the finish line, prompting Ford to withdraw from the project. Then came World War II, during which time the major automobile manufacturers dedicated their assembly lines to the war effort. From 1942 until 1946, no new models were introduced. Thus, by the mid-1940s, American consumers were desperate for cars. Spying an opportunity to challenge General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler for a share of this eager, fast-growing market, Tucker formed his own automobile manufacturing company, which he named the Tucker Corporation.

"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.
The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.

James Douglas Muir "Jay" Leno /ˈlɛnoʊ/ (born April 28, 1950) is an American stand-up comedian and television host.
From 1992 to 2009, Leno was the host of NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Beginning in September 2009, Leno started a primetime talk show, titled The Jay Leno Show, which aired weeknights at 10:00 p.m. (Eastern Time, UTC-5), also on NBC. After The Jay Leno Show was canceled in January 2010 amid a host controversy, Leno returned to host The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 1, 2010.
James "Jay" Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York, in 1950. His mother, Catherine (née Muir; 1911–1993), a homemaker, was born in Greenock, Scotland, and came to the United States at age 11. Leno's father, Angelo (1910–1994), who worked as an insurance salesman, was born in New York to immigrants from Flumeri, Italy. Leno grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and although his high school guidance counselor recommended that he drop out of school, he later obtained a Bachelor's degree in speech therapy from Emerson College, where he started a comedy club in 1973. Leno's siblings include his late older brother, Patrick, who was a Vietnam veteran and a lawyer.

Within just a couple of years, however, the Tucker Corporation had folded in the wake of suspicions about its founder's business practices.
With the post-war economy booming during the summer of 1948, American consumers were in a buying mood, especially for cars. But the people crowding dealers' showrooms were yearning for something more exciting than the offerings of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, whose designs seemed old-fashioned and unimaginative. Into this void stepped Preston Tucker, a brash entrepreneur and master of promotion who insisted that he had just what Americans wanted-"The Car of Tomorrow Today." His namesake automobile boasted a radical new aerodynamic look and a number of innovative safety features. At first, it seemed that Tucker had indeed tapped into the public's growing desire for a sleeker, safer car; his company was flooded with orders in a matter of just a few months. Ultimately, however, his inability to deliver on his promises cost him his business as well as his reputation.

Ever since I saw the movie about Preston Tucker in 1988, then saw my first Tucker in the early 1990s, I've maintained an interest in this classic automobile. My concern has always been, for such a historically significant vehicle, it continues to be shrouded in mystery. There are very few high resolution pictures out there, and what is out there often doesn't even convey the true color of the car. Ever since I saw the movie about Preston Tucker in 1988, then saw my first Tucker in the early 1990s, I've maintained an interest in this classic automobile. My concern has always been, for such a historically significant vehicle, it continues to be shrouded in mystery. Even the official website (www.tuckerclub.org) is not very forthcoming with information and the pictures there are low resolution. There are very few high resolution pictures out there, and what is out there often doesn't even convey the true color of the car. For example, a particular car can look like it's 3 different colors in pictures taken by 3 different people. It's also hard to find in-depth information. Many websites just glean some of the major information to give you, and even then the accuracy differs. Many websites say that the Tucker was the first car to offer seatbelts. Even though it is something he wanted to do, the are other websites which say that the car did not have seat belts in it because the executives thought that it would make the car appear to be unsafe. Who's right? Then there is a discrepancy in what Preston Tucker wanted for his car, and what was actually produced; and some websites are not accurately differentiating what the true features are.
Because there really isn't a website out there where you can really get a good feel for the car, especially if you've never seen in person; I wanted to put something together that conveyed how special this car truly is, and why it needs to be preserved.
My hope is that one day, there will be a website that will authoritatively give a complete breakdown of the mechanics and appearance of the car, with high quality and high resolution close-up pictures of everything. In addition there needs to be professional (color-corrected) high resolution pictures taken of each Tucker: without people in the picture, museum ropes and barricades, signs, and other cars. It seems that you only get something like this when a car is put up for auction and they want to put it in the best light possible.
Some of the Tuckers are readily accessible in museums and collections, and some of those in personal collections are taken to frequent Car Shows; and these get photographed often. But there are others that are not seen, and don't get photographed. Because of how spread out these cars are, many people will never, ever have a chance to see one up close, and I think it would great if someone, possibly the Tucker Automobile Club of America (TACA), would establish a showcase website to share to the world the attributes of this magnificent car. Nevertheless, the TACA website is the best place right now to get credible information, though you have to spend a lot of time reading and digging to get to it.
That being said, this video is my way of paying tribute to the 1948 Tucker, so that people can have a concise picture of what this car represents and why it is important to automotive history for it to be documented.
UPDATE (10/25/15): YouTube threatened to take down my video if I didn't remove the copyrighted background music- which I fully identified and gave credit for. So I removed all the music.
