20th century

The 20th century was a century that began on January 1, 1901 and ended on December 31, 2000. It was the tenth and final century of the 2nd millennium. It is distinct from the century known as the 1900s (sometimes written as 19XX), which began on January 1, 1900 and ended on December 31, 1999.

Dubbed the "short twentieth century", this century in human history was dominated by chain of events that heralded significant changes in world history as to redefine the era: World War I and World War II, nationalism and decolonization, the Cold War and Post-Cold War conflicts, cultural homogenization through developments in transportation and communications technology, world population growth, awareness of environmental degradation, ecological extinction and the birth of the Digital Revolution. It saw great advances in communication and medical technology that by the late 1980s allowed for near-instantaneous worldwide computer communication and genetic modification of life.

Overview

The century had the first global-scale total wars between world powers across continents and oceans in World War I and World War II. Nationalism became a major political issue in the world in the 20th century, acknowledged in international law along with the right of nations to self-determination, official decolonization in the mid-century, and nationalist-influenced armed regional-conflicts.

Ferd is a Norwegian conglomerate that operates within industry and finance as well as a real estate portfolio. The group is owned by Johan H. Andresen and his two daughters Katharina and Alexandra; and dates back to 1778. The group also has a number of venture and private equity holdings.

History

The company dates back to 1778 when the Andresen family started a tobacco factory. In 1849 the family bought J. L. Tiedemanns Tobaksfabrik that it owned until it was merged with Skandinavisk Tobakskompagni.

In 1957 the group established Elopak that produces systems for packaging of fluids and in 1978 it bought the sport equipment manufacturer Swix. The name Ferd dates from 2001.

Ferdinand

Ferdinand is a Germanic name composed of the elements frith "protection" , frið "peace" (PIE pri to love, to make peace) or alternatively farð "journey, travel", Proto-Germanic *farthi, abstract noun from root *far- "to fare, travel" (PIE par "to lead, pass over"), and nanth "courage" or nand "ready, prepared" related to Old Spanish , Old High German nendan "to risk, venture."

The name was adopted in Romance languages from its use in the Visigothic Kingdom. It is reconstructed as either Gothic Ferdinanths or Frithunanths. It became popular in German-speaking Europe only from the 16th century, with Habsburg rule over Spain. Variants of the name include Fernán, Fernando, Hernando, and Hernán in Spanish, Ferran in Catalan, and Fernando and Fernão in Portuguese. The French forms are Ferrand, Fernand, and Fernandel, and it is Ferdinando and Fernando in Italian. In Hungarian both Ferdinánd and Nándor are used equally.

There are numerous hypocorisms or short forms in many languages, such as Finnish version is Veeti.

Television advertisement

A television advertisement (variously called a television commercial, commercial or ad in American English, and known in British English as an advert) is a span of television programming produced and paid for by an organization, which conveys a message, typically to market a product or service. Advertising revenue provides a significant portion of the funding for most privately owned television networks. The vast majority of television advertisements today consist of brief advertising spots, ranging in length from a few seconds to several minutes (as well as program-length infomercials). Advertisements of this sort have been used to promote a wide variety of goods, services and ideas since the beginning of television.

The effects of television advertising upon the viewing public (and the effects of mass media in general) have been the subject of philosophical discourse by such luminaries as Marshall McLuhan. The viewership of television programming, as measured by companies such as Nielsen Media Research, is often used as a metric for television advertisement placement, and consequently, for the rates charged to advertisers to air within a given network, television program, or time of day (called a "daypart").
