Tafelberg, Suriname
Tafelberg (literally "Table Mountain") is one of the highest mountains in Suriname at 1,026 metres (3,366 ft). It is a mesa and is part of the Tafelberg Nature Reserve. The mountain is located in the Sipaliwini District. The Tafelberg Airstrip is nearby.

Suriname (/ˈsʊrᵻnæm/, /ˈsʊrᵻnɑːm/ or /ˈsʊrᵻnəm/, also spelled Surinam), officially known as the Republic of Suriname (Dutch: Republiek Suriname, Dutch pronunciation: [ˌreːpyˈblik ˌsyːriˈnaːmə]), is a sovereign state on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America. It is bordered by French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west and Brazil to the south. At just under 165,000 km2 (64,000 sq mi), it is the smallest country in South America. Suriname has a population of approximately 566,000, most of whom live on the country's north coast, in and around the capital and largest city, Paramaribo.
Originally inhabited by a number of indigenous tribes, Suriname was explored and contested by European powers before coming under Dutch rule in the late 17th century. In 1948 the country gained autonomy and in 1954 it became one of the constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. On 25 November 1975, the country of Suriname left the Kingdom of the Netherlands to become an independent state, nonetheless maintaining close economic, diplomatic, and cultural ties to its former colonizer.

Surinam (Dutch colony)
Surinam was a Dutch plantation colony in the Guianas, neighboured by the equally Dutch colony of Berbice to the west, and the French colony of Cayenne to the east. Surinam was a Dutch colony from 26 February 1667, when Dutch forces captured Francis Willoughby's English colony during the Second Anglo-Dutch War, until 15 December 1954, when Suriname became a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The status quo of Dutch sovereignty over Surinam, and English sovereignty over New Netherland, which it had conquered in 1664, was kept in the Treaty of Breda of 31 July 1667, and again confirmed in the Treaty of Westminster of 1674.
After the other Dutch colonies in the Guianas, i.e., Berbice, Essequibo, Demerara, and Pomeroon, were lost to the British in 1814, the remaining colony of Surinam was often referred to as Dutch Guiana, especially after 1831, when the British merged Berbice, Essequibo, and Demerara into British Guiana. As the term Dutch Guiana was used in the 17th and 18th to refer to all Dutch colonies in the Guianas, this use of the term can be confusing (see below).

If you look at a map of South America very carefully, you'll notice a little country called Suriname in the top right corner. They don't speak Spanish there. They surprisingly speak Dutch, along with a ton of other languages. Gone are the Latin influences, instead you find touches of Indonesia, India, China, Holland and West Africa. It's a fascinating place, and I was going to start with the capital, Paramaribo, to get a better understanding of it. Thankfully, there was plenty of food and Parbo beer waiting for me. Suriname gained its independence from the Netherlands on November 25, 1975. The process leading to Suriname's independence involved several key events and negotiations. Suriname was a Dutch colony for nearly three centuries, with the Dutch establishing control in the 17th century. By the mid-20th century, there was a growing global movement toward decolonization, and many colonies sought independence from their colonial rulers. In the years leading up to independence, Suriname experienced the emergence of various political parties and movements advocating for self-determination and independence. The key political parties during this period were the National Party of Suriname (Nationale Partij Suriname, or NPS), led by Henck Arron, and the Progressive Reform Party (Progressieve Surinaamse Volkspartij, or PSV), led by Jagernath Lachmon. In 1974, a Round Table Conference was held in The Hague, Netherlands, where representatives from the Dutch government, Surinamese political parties, and other stakeholders discussed the terms of Suriname's independence. This conference played a crucial role in shaping the future of the country.
At the Round Table Conference, an agreement was reached for Suriname to gain independence on November 25, 1975. The agreement stipulated that Suriname would become a sovereign nation while maintaining friendly relations with the Netherlands. Suriname agreed to take responsibility for its own governance, defense, and foreign affairs. In the months leading up to independence, a transitional government was established in Suriname to prepare for the handover of power. The Netherlands provided technical and financial assistance to facilitate the transition. On November 25, 1975, Suriname officially became an independent nation, with Paramaribo as its capital. The country's first president was Johan Ferrier, and Henck Arron became the first Prime Minister.
It's worth noting that while Suriname gained political independence in 1975, it faced numerous challenges in the years that followed, including political instability, economic difficulties, and a military coup in 1980. These challenges have played a significant role in shaping Suriname's history and development since its independence.

No subtitles? Click on cogwheel or CC icon. In 2015, Dutch public television made a series of documentaries about the 200th anniversary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The series was critized for not reflecting colonial history enough, so two additional episodes were tacked on about Suriname and Indonesia, two former Dutch colonies. In this episode, the two white presenters discover how Suriname in South America tries to develop its own perspective on its history, using newly discovered documents as well as oral history. A new generation of Surinamese historians wants to develop a new discourse independent of the Dutch view of the country. After the Dutch conquered the territory in the 17th century, they imported a large number of enslaved Africans and forced them to work on plantations. Some of these Africans escaped to the hinterland and wage a guerilla war on the Dutch. Their descendents constitute a seperate ethnicity to this day, called the Maroons. The Africans that didn't escape were the ancestors of Suriname's Creole ethnicity. After the Dutch abolished slavery relatively late in the 19th century, indentured laborors from India (Hindustanis) and Indonesia (Javanese) were brought to Suriname. In the 1920s and 1930s, Dutch colonial authorities supressed local political movements, as is illustrated by the tragic fate of national hero Anton de Kom. After spending time in the Netherlands where he was in contact with Indonesian nationalists such as Mohammad Hatta, the later vice-president of Indonesia, he returned to Suriname where he became a social organizer. For his activism, he was exiled from the colony, joined the Dutch resistance against the Germans in the Secord World War, and died in a Nazi concentration camp. After the war, leaders Jopi Pengel and Jagernath Lachmon persued a 'fraternization policy' which succesfully saved Suriname from inter-ethnic violence. The peaceful coexistence of its many ethnicities and religions is at the core of Surinamese nationalism today. Suriname gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975. Famous author and historian Cynthia McLeod shares her personal memories of this event. The documentary also sheds light how Suriname influenced Dutch society, and talks to Dutch hip-hop artist Typhoon about his vision on the legacy of slavery and colonialism.

Did you know there are over 350,000 people of Surinamese descent in the Netherlands? Suriname used to be a Dutch colony. Modern-day Suriname is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the Americas made up of Africans, Indians, Indonesians, and more.
When Suriname gained independence in 1975, many Surinamese migrated to the Netherlands...and Dutch culture today is a melting pot of these migrants' cultures, traditions, and stories.

If you look at a map of South America very carefully, you'll notice a little country called Suriname in the top right corner. They don't speak Spanish there. They surprisingly speak Dutch, along with a ton of other languages. Gone are the Latin influences, instead you find touches of Indonesia, India, China, Holland and West Africa. It's a fascinating place, and I was going to start with the capital, Paramaribo, to get a better understanding of it.
Thankfully, there was plenty of food and Parbo beer waiting for me. But first, I had to learn Dutch - a sentence I never thought would escape my mouth.

Suriname gained its independence from the Netherlands on November 25, 1975. The process leading to Suriname's independence involved several key events and negotiations. Suriname was a Dutch colony for nearly three centuries, with the Dutch establishing control in the 17th century. By the mid-20th century, there was a growing global movement toward decolonization, and many colonies sought independence from their colonial rulers. In the years leading up to independence, Suriname experienced the emergence of various political parties and movements advocating for self-determination and independence. The key political parties during this period were the National Party of Suriname (Nationale Partij Suriname, or NPS), led by Henck Arron, and the Progressive Reform Party (Progressieve Surinaamse Volkspartij, or PSV), led by Jagernath Lachmon. In 1974, a Round Table Conference was held in The Hague, Netherlands, where representatives from the Dutch government, Surinamese political parties, and other stakeholders discussed the terms of Suriname's independence. This conference played a crucial role in shaping the future of the country.
At the Round Table Conference, an agreement was reached for Suriname to gain independence on November 25, 1975. The agreement stipulated that Suriname would become a sovereign nation while maintaining friendly relations with the Netherlands. Suriname agreed to take responsibility for its own governance, defense, and foreign affairs. In the months leading up to independence, a transitional government was established in Suriname to prepare for the handover of power. The Netherlands provided technical and financial assistance to facilitate the transition. On November 25, 1975, Suriname officially became an independent nation, with Paramaribo as its capital. The country's first president was Johan Ferrier, and Henck Arron became the first Prime Minister.
It's worth noting that while Suriname gained political independence in 1975, it faced numerous challenges in the years that followed, including political instability, economic difficulties, and a military coup in 1980. These challenges have played a significant role in shaping Suriname's history and development since its independence.

No subtitles? Click on cogwheel or CC icon. In 2015, Dutch public television made a series of documentaries about the 200th anniversary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The series was critized for not reflecting colonial history enough, so two additional episodes were tacked on about Suriname and Indonesia, two former Dutch colonies. In this episode, the two white presenters discover how Suriname in South America tries to develop its own perspective on its history, using newly discovered documents as well as oral history. A new generation of Surinamese historians wants to develop a new discourse independent of the Dutch view of the country. After the Dutch conquered the territory in the 17th century, they imported a large number of enslaved Africans and forced them to work on plantations. Some of these Africans escaped to the hinterland and wage a guerilla war on the Dutch. Their descendents constitute a seperate ethnicity to this day, called the Maroons. The Africans that didn't escape were the ancestors of Suriname's Creole ethnicity. After the Dutch abolished slavery relatively late in the 19th century, indentured laborors from India (Hindustanis) and Indonesia (Javanese) were brought to Suriname. In the 1920s and 1930s, Dutch colonial authorities supressed local political movements, as is illustrated by the tragic fate of national hero Anton de Kom. After spending time in the Netherlands where he was in contact with Indonesian nationalists such as Mohammad Hatta, the later vice-president of Indonesia, he returned to Suriname where he became a social organizer. For his activism, he was exiled from the colony, joined the Dutch resistance against the Germans in the Secord World War, and died in a Nazi concentration camp. After the war, leaders Jopi Pengel and Jagernath Lachmon persued a 'fraternization policy' which succesfully saved Suriname from inter-ethnic violence. The peaceful coexistence of its many ethnicities and religions is at the core of Surinamese nationalism today. Suriname gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975. Famous author and historian Cynthia McLeod shares her personal memories of this event. The documentary also sheds light how Suriname influenced Dutch society, and talks to Dutch hip-hop artist Typhoon about his vision on the legacy of slavery and colonialism.

Though located in South America, a region that is predominantly Spanish and Portuguese speaking and practices Catholicism. Suriname’s official language is Dutch, their largest single ethnic group is east Indian, and 14% of the country practice Islam.

Who is "Dutch?" What is it like growing up as a Surinamese (South Asian) in the Netherlands?
Did you know there are over 350,000 people of Surinamese descent in the Netherlands? Suriname used to be a Dutch colony. Modern-day Suriname is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the Americas made up of Africans, Indians, Indonesians, and more.
When Suriname gained independence in 1975, many Surinamese migrated to the Netherlands...and Dutch culture today is a melting pot of these migrants' cultures, traditions, and stories.

If you look at a map of South America very carefully, you'll notice a little country called Suriname in the top right corner. They don't speak Spanish there. They surprisingly speak Dutch, along with a ton of other languages. Gone are the Latin influences, instead you find touches of Indonesia, India, China, Holland and West Africa. It's a fascinating place, and I was going to start with the capital, Paramaribo, to get a better understanding of it.
Thankfully, there was plenty of food and Parbo beer waiting for me. But first, I had to learn Dutch - a sentence I never thought would escape my mouth.

This is a place where Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch and English speakers all meet, where the French and EU flags wave on polls, and where indigenous groups live side by side with African communities. I'm talking about the Guianas, the north-eastern chunk of South America. And we're going to explore it today.

This video explores the history of Suriname and explores how it ended up being the only Dutch colony in the South American mainland and the ways its society became a distinctly multi-ethnic and multicultural place. It begins with its first inhabitants, traces the way it became a plantation economy and how it achieved its independence in 1975. It continues with its post-independence struggles, the dictatorship of Bouterse and efforts to hold him accountable. It ends with current President Chan Santokhi.
