Thomas John "Tom" Dowd (October 20, 1925 – October 27, 2002) was an American recording engineer and producer for Atlantic Records. He was credited with innovating the multitrack recording method. Dowd worked on a veritable "who's who" of recordings that encompassed blues, jazz, pop, rock and soul records.
Born in Manhattan, Dowd grew up playing piano, tuba, violin, and string bass. His mother was an opera singer and his father was a concertmaster.
Dowd graduated from Stuyvesant High School in June 1942 at the age of 16. He continued his musical education at City College of New York. Dowd also played in a band at New York's Columbia University, where he became a conductor. He was also employed at the physics laboratory of Columbia University.
At age 18, Dowd was drafted into the military with the rank of sergeant. He continued his work in physics at Columbia University. He worked on the Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb. The purpose of the work was unclear until 1945. Dowd planned to obtain a degree in nuclear physics when he completed his work on the Manhattan Project. However, because his work was top secret, the university did not recognize it, and Dowd decided not to continue, since the university's curriculum would not have been able to further his physics education. His research for the military was more advanced than academic courses at that time.
Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born 30 March 1945), is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream. Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and fourth in Gibson's "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time". He was also named number five in Time magazine's list of "The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players" in 2009.
In the mid-1960s, Clapton left the Yardbirds to play blues with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". Furthermore, he formed blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. For most of the 1970s, Clapton's output bore the influence of the mellow style of JJ Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" helped reggae reach a mass market. Two of his most popular recordings were "Layla", recorded with Derek and the Dominos; and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", recorded with Cream. Following the death of his son Conor in 1991, Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven", which featured in his Unplugged album.

Criteria Studios is a music-recording studio in Miami, Florida, started in 1958 by musician Mack Emerman (né Maxwell Louis Emerman; 1923–2013). and which went on to become the source of many hit recordings, especially in the 1970s.
Many topline artists and producers have used Criteria over the years. A total of around 250 Gold or Platinum singles and albums were recorded at Criteria, including "Layla", "I Feel Good" and Eat a Peach, as well as parts of Hotel California and Rumours. Atlantic Records regularly used the studios to record their roster of artists in the 1970s, through a connection with Tom Dowd, a leading staff engineer/producer with the label. The Bee Gees worked out of Criteria, recording their later successes in the 1970s and early 1980s. In 1999, The Hit Factory purchased Criteria Studios, revamping and re-opening the studios under the new name The Hit Factory Criteria Miami.
Tom Dowd was a musician, engineer, producer, physicist, mathematician, and everyday genius. Along with Eric Clapton he discusses how the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs came together with Clapton, Duane Allman, and Derick and the Dominos. Filmed at Criteria Studios in Miami, FL, Dowd is shown at work behind the soundboards and reflecting on his memorable career. Dowd, whose creative spirit and passion for innovative technology helped shape the course of modern music, takes the controls behind the mixer relearning the title song Layla 30 years after its creation. From "Tom Dowd The Language of Music." Mr. Dowd's credits include recording sessions with Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Otis Redding, John Coltrane, The Allman Brothers Band, Tito Puente, Dizzy Gilles...
Tom Dowd won a long overdue Grammy Award for Excellence in Music this year. He was one of the prime innovators in music recording. During a career spanning more than fifty years. Tom helped shape the sound of many of the legends of music from Charlie Park, John Coltrane, Ray Charles and Bobby Darin to Aretha Franklin, The Allman Brothers and Eric Clapton. We had the pleasure of spending some time with him in the studio and talking to him about how a unique sound is created. Tom is featured in the excellent documentary, "The Rhythm of Sound".

A short snippet from the DVD: "Tom Dowd and the Language of Music" Eric Clapton talks about Tom Dowd, and Tom Dowd talks about the digital recording. The reason why I picked this part is, the pointless "Analog vs. Digital" discussions we have in recording technology and studio equipment web forums. Tom Dowd litteraly invented the faders we use today on mixing consoles. He'd been recording music since late 40s! His recording techniques had revolutionised the world of music recording. But here, he doesn't talk about gears and studio equipment... he talks about "capturing the musical expression". The truth is... this is EXACTLY what's this all about: capturing the music. R.I.P. The Canadian Church is becoming increasingly engaged in new media. Arguably, the person who started the trend was Bishop Thomas Dowd, the first Canadian priest with a blog (titled "Waiting in Joyful Hope"). Now an Auxiliary Bishop in Montreal, Bishop Dowd has extended his online ministry to Facebook and Twitter. In this Witness interview filmed at the 2011 CCCB Plenary Assembly in Cornwall, Ontario, the newly ordained bishop offers his insights on the Church in the digital age.

If you got a picture of your face
Could you leave it on your way out the door?
I don't care if it's color or black or white
I just need something to remember you by
Oh, before my life went dim
(Before my life went dim)
Oh, before my life went dim
(Before my life went dim)
No one told me the trouble I was in
Before my life went dim
I painted half my face so green
Don't you know I painted half my face blue?
In hopes of showing you both sides of me
(both sides of me)
I guess it came down to "don't you love me?"
(don't you love me?)
Oh, before my life went dim
(Before my life went dim)
Oh, before my life went dim
(Before my life went dim)
No one told me the trouble I was in
Before my life went dim
(solo)
Can't this car go any faster?
Can't this car go any faster?
Can't this car go any faster? (Faster, faster)
Can't this car go 'cause I can still see where I am
Oh, before my life went dim
(Before my life went dim)
Oh, before my life went dim
(Before my life went dim)
You shoulda told me the trouble I was in
