Trained with classical music, she has sung a wide range of classical-based songs, as well as performed with classical maestros such as Pandit Jasraj and M. Balamurali Krishna. In her career, she has worked with a variety of music composers, including R. D. Burman and A. R. Rahman. She is also the recipient of four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, including 3 consecutive awards in the period 1994--1996 and the Padmashri which she received in 2006. Kavita Subramaniam née Kavita Krishnamurthy (born Sharada Krishnamurthy on 25 January 1958) is a well-known Indian film playback singer. She is classically trained and has sung a wide range of classical-based songs. In her career, she has worked with a variety of music composers, including R. D. Burman and A. R. Rahman. She is also the recipient of four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, including 3 consecutive awards in the period 1994–1996 and the prestigious Padmashri which she received in 2006.
Born Sharada Krishnamurthy in a Tamil Iyer family in New Delhi, India to T.S. Krishnamurthy, an employee of Education Ministry. She began her music training with her aunt, Mrs. Bhattacharya, who taught her Rabindra Sangeet. She began her formal training in Hindustani classical music under Balram Puri, a classical singer.
At the young age of eight, Kavita won a gold medal at a music competition. Subsequently, she kept winning many such gold medals as she kept participating in the Inter-Ministry Classical Competition in New Delhi in the mid 1960s.

Plot: Lalita (Madhuri Dixit) is married under duress from her maternal uncle, Madhi (Tej Sapru) to a cruel and possessive man, JB (Raj Babbar). He loves Lalita, but keeps her like a bird in a cage, hovering over and dominating her. Lalita runs away and enters the lives of Raj (Rishi Kapoor), his grandfather (Kader Khan), and Kaki (Dina Pathak). In order to hide her identity, she calls herself Shikha. Eventually, the family grow fond of Shikha, and Raj and she also fall in love. Raj's grandfather plans to marry Shikha off to Raj, when JB shows up and tells the family about the real identity of Shikha, and of her marital status, which Madhi quickly collaborates. The family is shocked to find out that Shikha has been lying to them. JB takes Lalita with him, and Lalita agrees to be his dutiful wife for ever. But will Raj forget his Shikha? And did Lalita really mean when she said she would be a dutiful wife to JB?

She is also the recipient of four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, including 3 consecutive awards in the period 1994--1996 and the prestigious Padmashri which she received in 2006.
Tu Hi Re was beautifully rendered by Hariharan and Kavita Krishnamurthy. The first of these sounded like it could sound like "Rukmani" later in the song, but it turned into rap/middle eastern music with tabla in the background. Fernandes is great; he has no trouble in singing this fun song. The latter of the two songs, "Tu Hi Re", is completely the opposite. Hariharan renders the song beautifully and Kavita aids him with the normal nasal but greatly improved voice.

The ceremony, hosted by Saif Ali Khan and Parineeti Chopra featured stellar performances by celebrated musicians and Bollywood stars including Shankar Mahadevan and his sons -- Shivam and Siddarth, Sonu Niigaam, Sonkashi Sinha with Mika, Sukhwinder among others. There was a special act dedicated to the musical maestro AR Rahman for completing 20 years in the industry, he was felicitated by none other than Yash Chopra. Renowned singers like Alka Yagnik, Hariharan, Udit Narayan, Naresh Iyer, Mohit Chauhan, Chitra, Sonu Niigaam came together to honor the young legend with a heart-warming performance to some of his chartbuster hits like 'Dil Hai Chota Sa', 'Tu Hi Re', 'Chanda Re Chande Re', 'Mitwa', ' Mehndi Hai Rachne Wali', 'Ru Ba Ru', 'Saathiya', 'Sadda Haq' and 'Jai Ho'.
Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha enthralled the audience with her high-energy act to her latest hit songs like 'Go Go Govinda', 'Chinta Ta' (along with Mika) and her upcoming movie 'Son of Sardar'. The surprise in the act was co-star and Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgn who joined her on-stage to groove on the title track of 'Son of Sardar'.
A special award honoring 'Lifetime Achievement Award' went to Smt. Girija Devi (Indian Classical singer) while the 'Global Indian Musician Award' was bestowed upon music legend Pt. Jasraj.
Rockstar walked away with 6 GiMA Awards leading in the Film category, there was a tie between Alka Yagnik & Babul Supriyo (Mone-Rob) and Sarvani Sen & Kaushiki Desikan (Yatra 2) for the Best Folk Album in the Non-film Category. Noted musician Dr. L Subramanium received the Best Carnatic Classical Album Instrumental in the Non Film Category.
GiMA 2012 saw a total number of 10 awards being given out in the Film Category while 12 awards in the Non-film category.
On the special tribute given at the 3rd Chevrolet Star GiMA Awards, AR Rahman said, "I was hinted out about the tribute but I did not realize that this will create such a big nostalgia. I have learnt a lot from all these singers who have touched my heart today. I still remember the day of my first concert in 1996 when most of the singers who sang today, came to watch me. I really thank GiMA for this. I am truly touched."
