To the right of the road leading to Kusadasi can be seen the ruins of the Temple of Artemis (Diana), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Artemis, the virgin goddess of nature, and protectress of women in childbirth is mentioned in the Iliad with the phrase: Praise be to Artemis! She, who would water her horses at the reed-filled Meles river, then pass speedily through Smyrna on her golden chariot towards the vineyards of Coloros."
The mention of Smyrna in this description would suggest that the goddess Artemis is of Anatolian origin. At another point in his Iliad, Homer gives the birthplace of Artemis as Ortygie. Ortygie" means quail in ancient Greek, and might also have been related to the Mount Nightingale (Bülbüldag) which was the site of the original city of Ephesus.
Furthermore, the Ephesians at one point had a resolution passed in the Roman senate stating that their place of origin was Ortygie, and Artemis their patron goddess. It is perhaps for this reason that the Ephesians erected such a magnificent temple to this goddess. Artemis is not, in fact, a word of Greek origin, but a derivative of "artems", meaning "untouched", or 'unspoiled' in an ancient local tongue.
In Ephesus, Artemis was considered as one and the same as Cybele, the goddess from whom the land of Anatolia is said to have been born. She is depicted as a multi breasted figure with many facets, and bears the model of a temple on her head, in the form of a crown. This triple-storeyed crown indicates that she is the protector of cities, while the crescent on her forehead indicates that she is the moon goddess. The breasts, at the same time, link her to the fertility cult. Artemis also bore the symbol of the bee, the emblem of Ephesus, which indicates that she is a unique product of Anatolian mythology. The ruined Artemision contained a total of 127 columns, the 36 façade columns being decorated with reliefs. It was 115 metres long, 55 metres wide and 18 metres high.
The earliest traces of the Artemision building date to the 7th century B.C. The original temple was destroyed by the Cimmerians, and was re-built during the 6th century B.C Destroyed once more during the reign of the mad king Herostratos in the year 356 B.C, Ephesus began to rebuild its cult centre on an even grander scale after that date. Alexander passed through Ephesus at about that time and learning that the temple had been destroyed and burnt down on his birthday, he expressed the Desire to assist with its re-construction.
He wished, the new temple to be dedicated to him. But the Ephesians could not assent to this and undertook the reconstruction of the temple without his aid. The new temple of Artemis measured 105 metres by 55 metres, and was 25 metres in height, covering an area 6000 square metres in all. Alexander extended the temenos to include an inhabitated area around the temple as part of the sacred compound. This sacred area was preserved through the rule of several different kings and governors, was expanded and finally abolished by the emperor Augustus. In 263 AD., the temple was sacked and destroyed during the invasion of the Goths.

Lead: The colossal temple of Artemis in the port city of Ephesus blended the size of Greek architecture and the decorative style of the East. It was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Intro.: A Moment in Time with Dan Roberts.
Content: Ephesus was a major trading port in western Asia Minor, now in the Turkish province of Izmir. It was a commercial center and, by the beginning of the sixth century BCE, a cultural hub largely due to the construction in its precincts of the cultic Temple of Artemis, in several versions built on the same site over many decades, climaxing in a huge temple enshrined to the worship of the fertility goddess of hunting, Artemis, also associated with the goddess Diana, who according to the cult provided protection for Ephesus and for supplicants from all over the region in trouble and fleeing their enemies. The final structure was recognized by ancient historians as one of the wonders of the Mediterranean world.
The ultimate temple was estimated to be as long as 425 feet with a mid-span of 255 feet about the size of the interior of New Yorks Grand Central Station. One hundred and twenty-seven elaborately decorated columns supported the roof. The funds for the columns were supplied by Lydian king Kroisos (Croesus), famed for his wealth, his minting of elegant gold and silver coins and the saying that has come down through the ages about the fabulously wealthy, describing them as rich as Kroisos.
The temple was burned sometime in the first half of the fourth century BCE and almost nothing of the great structure remains today save a site discovered by archaeologist John Turtle Wood in 1870 after a seven year search and a few artifacts that remain today on display in the British Museum.

The Temple of Artemis (Greek: Ἀρτεμίσιον, or Artemision), also known less precisely as the Temple of Diana, was a Greek temple dedicated to a goddess Greeks identified as Artemis and was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was located in Ephesus (near the modern town of Selçuk in present-day Turkey), and was completely rebuilt three times before its eventual destruction in 401. Only foundations and sculptural fragments of the latest of the temples at the site remain.
The first sanctuary (temenos) antedated the Ionic immigration by many years, and dates to the Bronze Age. Callimachus, in his Hymn to Artemis, attributed it to the Amazons. In the 7th century the old temple was destroyed by a flood. Its reconstruction began around 550 BC, under the Cretan architect Chersiphron and his son Metagenes, at the expense of Croesus of Lydia: the project took 10 years to complete, only to be destroyed in an act of arson by Herostratus. It was later rebuilt.

Drone Flight over Sardis: The Temple of Artemis
One of many circuits through the Temple of Artemis, this flight starts at the west end among the standing columns of the Roman west façade and porch. On the left is Church M, a chapel belonging to the late Antique, Christian phase of this sacred temenos. Circling around to the north, the three newly-cleaned columns and Hellenistic cella walls and column foundations stand out against the uncleaned surfaces blackened by cyanobacteria and lichen. The flight circles the two standing columns, showing the stylistic differences between the two contemporary Roman capitals — note the leaf patterns that decorate the capital that now rests skewed, compared to the much plainer capital that rests straight. The flight passes through the east and west cellas of the temple, and over the Altar of Artemis. -

To the right of the road leading to Kusadasi can be seen the ruins of the Temple of Artemis (Diana), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Artemis, the virgin goddess of nature, and protectress of women in childbirth is mentioned in the Iliad with the phrase: Praise be to Artemis! She, who would water her horses at the reed-filled Meles river, then pass speedily through Smyrna on her golden chariot towards the vineyards of Coloros."
The mention of Smyrna in this description would suggest that the goddess Artemis is of Anatolian origin. At another point in his Iliad, Homer gives the birthplace of Artemis as Ortygie. Ortygie" means quail in ancient Greek, and might also have been related to the Mount Nightingale (Bülbüldag) which was the site of the original city of Ephesus.
Furthermore, the Ephesians at one point had a resolution passed in the Roman senate stating that their place of origin was Ortygie, and Artemis their patron goddess. It is perhaps for this reason that the Ephesians erected such a magnificent temple to this goddess. Artemis is not, in fact, a word of Greek origin, but a derivative of "artems", meaning "untouched", or 'unspoiled' in an ancient local tongue.
In Ephesus, Artemis was considered as one and the same as Cybele, the goddess from whom the land of Anatolia is said to have been born. She is depicted as a multi breasted figure with many facets, and bears the model of a temple on her head, in the form of a crown. This triple-storeyed crown indicates that she is the protector of cities, while the crescent on her forehead indicates that she is the moon goddess. The breasts, at the same time, link her to the fertility cult. Artemis also bore the symbol of the bee, the emblem of Ephesus, which indicates that she is a unique product of Anatolian mythology. The ruined Artemision contained a total of 127 columns, the 36 façade columns being decorated with reliefs. It was 115 metres long, 55 metres wide and 18 metres high.
The earliest traces of the Artemision building date to the 7th century B.C. The original temple was destroyed by the Cimmerians, and was re-built during the 6th century B.C Destroyed once more during the reign of the mad king Herostratos in the year 356 B.C, Ephesus began to rebuild its cult centre on an even grander scale after that date. Alexander passed through Ephesus at about that time and learning that the temple had been destroyed and burnt down on his birthday, he expressed the Desire to assist with its re-construction.
He wished, the new temple to be dedicated to him. But the Ephesians could not assent to this and undertook the reconstruction of the temple without his aid. The new temple of Artemis measured 105 metres by 55 metres, and was 25 metres in height, covering an area 6000 square metres in all. Alexander extended the temenos to include an inhabitated area around the temple as part of the sacred compound. This sacred area was preserved through the rule of several different kings and governors, was expanded and finally abolished by the emperor Augustus. In 263 AD., the temple was sacked and destroyed during the invasion of the Goths.

Content: Ephesus was a major trading port in western Asia Minor, now in the Turkish province of Izmir. It was a commercial center and, by the beginning of the sixth century BCE, a cultural hub largely due to the construction in its precincts of the cultic Temple of Artemis, in several versions built on the same site over many decades, climaxing in a huge temple enshrined to the worship of the fertility goddess of hunting, Artemis, also associated with the goddess Diana, who according to the cult provided protection for Ephesus and for supplicants from all over the region in trouble and fleeing their enemies. The final structure was recognized by ancient historians as one of the wonders of the Mediterranean world.
The ultimate temple was estimated to be as long as 425 feet with a mid-span of 255 feet about the size of the interior of New Yorks Grand Central Station. One hundred and twenty-seven elaborately decorated columns supported the roof. The funds for the columns were supplied by Lydian king Kroisos (Croesus), famed for his wealth, his minting of elegant gold and silver coins and the saying that has come down through the ages about the fabulously wealthy, describing them as rich as Kroisos.
The temple was burned sometime in the first half of the fourth century BCE and almost nothing of the great structure remains today save a site discovered by archaeologist John Turtle Wood in 1870 after a seven year search and a few artifacts that remain today on display in the British Museum.

One of many circuits through the Temple of Artemis, this flight starts at the west end among the standing columns of the Roman west façade and porch. On the left is Church M, a chapel belonging to the late Antique, Christian phase of this sacred temenos. Circling around to the north, the three newly-cleaned columns and Hellenistic cella walls and column foundations stand out against the uncleaned surfaces blackened by cyanobacteria and lichen. The flight circles the two standing columns, showing the stylistic differences between the two contemporary Roman capitals — note the leaf patterns that decorate the capital that now rests skewed, compared to the much plainer capital that rests straight. The flight passes through the east and west cellas of the temple, and over the Altar of Artemis.

Then, when they are in the vicinity of Ephesus, she reappears. She’s very beautiful. Her hair is styled like it used to be and she’s wearing her best dress. Ali is troubled and everyone else is surprised: why has she dressed up so? What happened to the vagabond’s tunic they had given her? Dora shrugs her shoulders: why make such a fuss? All she wanted to do was dress up for a while. It’s normal for any woman. Or, at least, it’s normal for upper-class women (she says as she hints at Mirina). But Marcus reveals the mystery. Dora was born in Ephesus. Probably she doesn’t want to show her old friends how badly she is doing at the moment.

Temple Of Artemis Ephesus
This temple named for the goddess Artemis is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was the largest structure built during the Hellenistic period and the first to be made entirely of marble. It is also known by its Roman name, the Temple of Diana.

Temple Of Artemis Ephesus
This temple named for the goddess Artemis is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was the largest structure built during the Hellenistic period and the first to be made entirely of marble. It is also known by its Roman name, the Temple of Diana.

Ο ναός της Αρτέμιδος βρισκόταν στην Έφεσο της σημερινής Τουρκίας. Αποκαλείται και Αρτεμίσιο και κατασκευάστηκε το 440 π.Χ. Θεωρείται ένα από τα Επτά θαύματα του αρχαίου κόσμου. Αξιοσημείωτο είναι το γεγονός ότι χρειάστηκαν 120 χρόνια για να αποπερατωθεί ενώ είχε αρχικά ξεκινήσει από τον βασιλιά της Λυδίας, Κροίσο. Σήμερα τα απομεινάρια δεν θυμίζουν σε τίποτα τον μεγαλοπρεπή ναό που υπήρχε.
Όπως αναφέρει και ο Αντίπατρος ο Σιδώνιος, ο οποίος θεωρείται ο εμπνευστής της λίστας με τα επτά θαύματα του αρχαίου κόσμου, το μεγαλείο του ναού της Αρτέμιδος υπερβαίνει κάθε άλλο από τα υπόλοιπα μνημεία.
"Έχω δει τους μεγαλοπρεπείς Κρεμαστούς κήπους της Βαβυλώνας, το Άγαλμα του Ολυμπίου Διός, τον Κολοσσό της Ρόδου και τις Πυραμίδες της Αιγύπτου, όπως ακόμα και το Μαυσωλείο της Αλικαρνασσού, αλλά όταν βλέπω τον ναό της Αρτέμιδος που αγγίζει τον ουρανό τα υπόλοιπα μνημεία χάνουν την λαμπρότητά τους. Ο Στράβων αναφέρει ότι, το 356 π.Χ., τον ναό πυρπόλησε ο άγνωστος κατά τα άλλα Ηρόστρατος από την Έφεσο, για να απαθανατιστεί, όπως είπε, το όνομα του. Μόνο με τη βοήθεια άλλων πόλεων οι Εφέσιοι άρχισαν να χτίζουν έναν νέο ναό.

Στις αρχές του 5ου μ.Χ. αιώνα, ο Θεοδώρητος στο έργο του Εκκλησιαστική Ιστορία αναφέρει ότι ο ναός υπέστη ξανά καταστροφή (το 406 περίπου) με εντολή του Ιωάννη του Χρυσοστόμου. Πρέπει να σημειωθεί πάντως, ότι ο Ιωάννης την εποχή αυτή είχε απομακρυνθεί εξόριστος από τον πατριαρχικό θρόνο, ενώ την ίδια χρονική περίοδο, βρισκόταν σε ισχύ ο νόμος του Αρκάδιου (399) που απαγόρευε την καταστροφή των αρχαίων ναών.
From the Greek point of view Ephesian Artemis is a distinctive form of their goddess Artemis. In Greek cult and myth, Artemis is the twin of Apollo, a virgin huntress who supplanted the Titan Selene as goddess of the Moon. At Ephesus, a goddess whom the Greeks associated with Artemis was venerated in an archaic, certainly pre-Hellenic cult image that was carved of wood and kept decorated with jewelry. Robert Fleischer identified as decorations of the primitive xoanon the changeable features that since Minucius Felix and Jerome's Christian attacks on pagan popular religion had been read as many breasts or "eggs" — denoting her fertility (others interpret the objects to represent the testicles of sacrificed bulls that would have been strung on the image, with similar meaning). Most similar to Near-Eastern and Egyptian deities, and least similar to Greek ones, her body and legs are enclosed within a tapering pillar-like term, from which her feet protrude. On the coins minted at Ephesus, the apparently many-breasted goddess wears a mural crown (like a city's walls), an attribute of Cybele (see polos). On the coins she rests either arm on a staff formed of entwined serpents or of a stack of ouroboroi, the eternal serpent with its tail in its mouth. Something the Lady of Ephesus had in common with Cybele was that each was served by temple slave-women, or hierodules (hiero "holy", doule "female slave"), under the direction of a priestess who inherited her role, attended by a college of eunuch priests called "Megabyzoi" and also by young virgins (korai)

The ancient Greek city of Ephesus was famous for its Temple of Artemis (near present-day Selçuk), which was recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. After a messy period of conquest and reconquest and after the population was moved from Selçuk to the the present site, Ephesus became a Roman city in 133 BC. When Augustus made Ephesus capital of Asia Minor in 27 BC, it proved to be a windfall for the seaport city. Its population grew to around 250,000, attracting immigrants, merchants and imperial patronage. From Kuşadası Port to the Temple of Artemis - start of private tour in Turkey, NOS ship (Oct. 2013)
In Kuşadası Port of Call for our RCI Navigator of the Seas cruise ship, we had planned a private tour to Ephesus, using www.ephesustravelguide.com (POC: Denizhan Pekoz, tour guide). We met right after the cruise ship docked, so by 8:00AM that Thursday morning (October 10, 2013) we were aboard the Volkswagen van and ready to go! The Temple of Aphrodite - Aphrodisias Located in the northern section, in ancient times the Temple of Aphrodite formed the centre and nucleus of the city. All that remains of the ancient temple consists of fourteen of the over forty Ionic columns that once surrounded it and the foundations of the cella section. After a messy period of conquest and reconquest and after the population was moved from Selçuk to the the present site, Ephesus became a Roman city in 133 BC.
When Augustus made Ephesus capital of Asia Minor in 27 BC, it proved to be a windfall for the seaport city. Its population grew to around 250,000, attracting immigrants, merchants and imperial patronage.
The annual festival of Artemis (Diana to the Romans) became a month-long spring fest, drawing thousands from across the empire.
Ephesus also attracted Christian settlers (Greeks and Jews), including St. Paul who lived in Ephesus for three years (in the AD 50s) There is a tradition that St. John settled here with Mary, the mother of Jesus, and also wrote his gospel here.

To the right of the road leading to Kusadasi can be seen the ruins of the Temple of Artemis (Diana), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Artemis, the virgin goddess of nature, and protectress of women in childbirth is mentioned in the Iliad with the phrase: Praise be to Artemis! She, who would water her horses at the reed-filled Meles river, then pass speedily through Smyrna on her golden chariot towards the vineyards of Coloros."
The mention of Smyrna in this description would suggest that the goddess Artemis is of Anatolian origin. At another point in his Iliad, Homer gives the birthplace of Artemis as Ortygie. Ortygie" means quail in ancient Greek, and might also have been related to the Mount Nightingale (Bülbüldag) which was the site of the original city of Ephesus.
Furthermore, the Ephesians at one point had a resolution passed in the Roman senate stating that their place of origin was Ortygie, and Artemis their patron goddess. It is perhaps for this reason that the Ephesians erected such a magnificent temple to this goddess. Artemis is not, in fact, a word of Greek origin, but a derivative of "artems", meaning "untouched", or 'unspoiled' in an ancient local tongue.
In Ephesus, Artemis was considered as one and the same as Cybele, the goddess from whom the land of Anatolia is said to have been born. She is depicted as a multi breasted figure with many facets, and bears the model of a temple on her head, in the form of a crown. To the right of the road leading to Kusadasi can be seen the ruins of the Temple of Artemis (Diana), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Artemis, the virgin goddess of nature, and protectress of women in childbirth is mentioned in the Iliad with the phrase: Praise be to Artemis! She, who would water her horses at the reed-filled Meles river, then pass speedily through Smyrna on her golden chariot towards the vineyards of Coloros."
The mention of Smyrna in this description would suggest that the goddess Artemis is of Anatolian origin. At another point in his Iliad, Homer gives the birthplace of Artemis as Ortygie. Ortygie" means quail in ancient Greek, and might also have been related to the Mount Nightingale (Bülbüldag) which was the site of the original city of Ephesus.
Furthermore, the Ephesians at one point had a resolution passed in the Roman senate stating that their place of origin was Ortygie, and Artemis their patron goddess. It is perhaps for this reason that the Ephesians erected such a magnificent temple to this goddess. Artemis is not, in fact, a word of Greek origin, but a derivative of "artems", meaning "untouched", or 'unspoiled' in an ancient local tongue.
In Ephesus, Artemis was considered as one and the same as Cybele, the goddess from whom the land of Anatolia is said to have been born. She is depicted as a multi breasted figure with many facets, and bears the model of a temple on her head, in the form of a crown. Our FIRST STOP that morning was The Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
The Temple of Artemis or Artemision (Turkish: Artemis Tapınağı) - a Greek temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis - was located in Ephesus (near the modern town of Selçuk in present-day Turkey).
Seen here is the the site of the temple today -- at first sight, it does not appear to be much but if you close your eyes and listen to the tour guide Denizhan Pekoz, you can imagine a MARBLE temple once considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (completely rebuilt three times before its eventual destruction in 401 AD).
Unfortunately, all that remains of the Wonder of the World is a SINGLE COLUMN and some rubble on the ground.
However, it is a spiritually important site.
You would see 3 different religions meeting in the same block: a pagan temple, a Christian church (Basilica of St. John) and a Muslim mosque (Isa Bey Mosque).

In Kuşadası Port of Call for our RCI Navigator of the Seas cruise ship, we had planned a private tour to Ephesus, using
www.ephesustravelguide.com (POC: Denizhan Pekoz, tour guide).
We met right after the cruise ship docked, so by 8:00AM that Thursday morning (October 10, 2013) we were aboard the Volkswagen van and ready to go!
Total cost (at the time - October 2013):

$ USD 290.00 for 10 ppl
Payment was made in Euro or US Dollar - in cash - at the end of the tour.

The Temple of Aphrodite - Aphrodisias
Located in the northern section, in ancient times the Temple of Aphrodite formed the centre and nucleus of the city. All that remains of the ancient temple consists of fourteen of the over forty Ionic columns that once surrounded it and the foundations of the cella section. Although the cult centre dates back to earlier times the temple whose remains we see today was begun in the 1st century B.C. and is thought to have been completed during the reign of Augustus.
The temenos (temple precinct) was completed in the 2nd century during the reign of Hadrian. The building would appear to have been what is known as an octastyle temple with thirteen columns on each side and eight columns at front and rear. On some of the columns are inscribed the names of the donors who presented them to the temple.
The discovery of several mosaic fragments belonging to the Hellenistic period indicate the existence of an older temple on the same site, but with the conversion of the temple to a church in the 5th century all traces of the older building were erased.
At the same time, the walls of the cella containing the cult statues were removed and the building enlarged by moving the side columns outwards. Walls were added at the front and rear of the building to form an apse and nave. An apse and an atrium were added on the east and west.
No cult statue was found in the cella but in 1962 a statue was found immediately outside it bearing all the characteristics of a cult statue. This statue, which is now exhibited in the museum, displays a stiff, hieratic stance closely resembling the Artemis of Ephesus. The goddess is wearing a long garment. One of the arms is stretched forward. The reliefs carved on the bands of the garment are very interesting.
The sun god and moon goddess, the Three Graces with Aphrodite in the middle, Aphrodite and three Cupids seated on a goat with the tail of a fish are all symbols which frequently appear on various copies of the cult statue.
