BBTY - Breakthroughs in Cancer Research
From discovering six of the genes that predispose someone to bowel cancer, to pioneering the diagnosis and treatment of children’s cancers, Birmingham has a long history of making vital breakthroughs. It has always been a place that finds answers to make a real difference to people’s lives; and our researchers are close to further life changing solutions that could make a difference to patients in years, not decades. Join Professors Pam Kearns, Andrew Beggs and Colin Watts as they discuss ground-breaking research taking place at the University of Birmingham.

TEDxBrasd'Or - Jodi Beggs - But Does it Work? The Role of the Scientific Method in Policy Analysis
TEDxBrasd'Or took place on August 20, 2011 in Membertou, Nova Scotia. It was the first-ever TEDx event on Cape Breton Island.
The theme of TEDxBrasd'Or was "the other side has another side." The other side of a problem is a solution, and living in a mostly rural region of Atlantic Canada with a declining population and a loss of major industries has forced a lot of people to take action. Moving forward to a more prosperous future is an ongoing process and it isn't a miracle that's going to solve problems in this part of the world, but creativity. That's why TEDxBrasd'Or focused on looking beyond simple solutions and exploring creative, ingenious and even "out there" solutions to solve problems across a wide variety of disciplines.

Title:
Conservation downunder: New Zealand’s challenge with invasive species.
Summary
Understanding the processes and key drivers of biodiversity loss is fundamental in halting the decline. New Zealand was one of the last large land masses to be colonised by humans, so the consequences of human arrival are still playing out. Although we have made great strides in managing some invasive species, there remain many challenges if we are to retain the essence of a biota that was isolated for 80 million years. Using examples from my involvement with conservation research, from the iconic kākāpō (nocturnal, ground parrot), to the ecology and control of introduced northern hemisphere social wasps I will discuss the key challenges for conservation in New Zealand.

He became WSU’s 12th president in 1999 after serving two years as Chancellor at SIU Carbondale. He has served as Chair of the MVC President’s Council, and also represented the MVC on the prestigious NCAA Board of Directors. Beggs is the only person in the league in at least 30 years to have served as CEO at two different MVC schools.
He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Southern Illinois and his doctorate in educational measurement and statistics in 1966 from the University of Iowa. From 1966-1998, Beggs served in a number of capacities at SIU, beginning as assistant professor of educational measurement and statistics. He was named associate dean of the Graduate School in 1970, professor of educational measurement and statistics in 1972 and assistant dean of the College of Education in 1973.
Beggs became the acting dean for University Programs and acting assistant vice president for Academic Affairs and Research in 1975, and he was also named associate dean for the College of Education in 1975. In 1981, he was appointed Dean of the College of Education. He was named Chancellor at SIU in 1996.
During his tenure on the MVC Presidents Council, Beggs was a strong advocate for the Conference’s student-athletes and showed a commitment to supporting competitive athletics, both at the Conference level and at SIU and WSU.
He and his wife Shirley have two children, Brent and Pam.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
