Short history of Kretek Cigarettes in HD.

A brief history of cigarette in Indonesia. Starting from the reign of Mataram in the 16th century, growing up to the time of colonialism by the Dutch. Until late 19th century, where kretek cigarettes are mass-produced the first time.
Notes about when exactly the Indonesian population started smoking no one knows for sure. According to Thomas Stamford Raffles and De Condolle smoking and tobacco existing in Java around 1600.
In a book titled Cigarettes, Trails of History and Meaning for Development of the Nation (1987) Amen Budiman and Onghokham King wrote that Sultan Agung Mataram in 1613-1645 was a heavy smoker.
In the Holy books and history works Cigarettes Solichin Salam mentioned that “People Indonesia at that time has a habit to roll his own cigarette, in a way that very simple arrangement and form. Therefore cigarettes for indigenous peoples in Indonesia that time he has not an attractive merchandise. After the attempt to mix tobacco with various spices such as cloves, for example, or resin and fragrant roots, form the cigarette simplicity’s shift towards merchandise that is more meaningful and profitable “
Haji Djamhari is a legendary figure who lived in the Holy city in the 19th century, and is believed to be the inventor or first peracik clove. Narrated, initially Djamhari suffering chest diseases, or suspected asthma. He did therapy on himself by rubbing clove oil on the chest and back. As a result, suffered the pain is reduced. Furthermore, Djamhari improve treatment with chewing cloves. But the result is better. In the end, he cloves finely chopped, then poured it on tobacco that he used to smoke. Magically, the disease is cured. People he knew began to follow in his footsteps, cloves sprinkled on tobacco for smoking. Besides efficacious cure, there is a distinct flavor of clove tobacco blended with cloves. From where kretek clove, which became known as kretek, became known and widespread. Haji Djamari of this invention, emerging home-based industries that produce kretek.
Haji Djamhari died in 1890. Historians estimate Onghokham clove discovery events occurred between 1870 to 1880. Starting from treatment efforts eventually evolved into merchandise that spawned cottage industries. Kretek Haji Djamhari findings proved very popular with the public, so it continues to grow. Holy manufacture of cigarettes spread to other cities include Semarang, Surakarta even crossed into East Java. D manufacturer was not only among the natives, but also of Chinese descent. Haji Djamhari probably never imagined that eventually kretek clove pioneering now refined and expanded so transformed into a kretek industry.

Of course we don't recommend young people to start smoking... But like it or not Kretek cigarettes that are made with cloves are pretty unique... in fact if you smell a funny sweet clove smell in the air it's probably coming from an Indonesian cigarette! I took my mom (obviously of legal age) to a warung rokok and she decided to give them a try and here are the results.

Kretek
Kretek /ˈkrɛtɛk/ are cigarettes made with a blend of tobacco, cloves and other flavors. The word "kretek" itself is an onomatopoetic term for the crackling sound of burning cloves.
Partly due to favorable taxation compared to "white" cigarettes, kreteks are by far the most widely smoked form of cigarettes in Indonesia, where about 90% of smokers usually smoke kreteks. In Indonesia, there are hundreds of kretek manufacturers, including small local makers and major brands. Most of the widely known international brands, including Dji Sam Soe 234, Bentoel, Minak Djinggo, Djarum, Gudang Garam, and Wismilak originate from Indonesia. Nat Sherman of the United States produces cigarettes branded as "A Touch of Clove" but they are not true kreteks since there is clove flavoring infused into small crystals located inside the filter, rather than actual clove spice mixed with the tobacco.
History
The origin of kretek cigarettes can be traced to the late 19th century. The creator of kretek was Haji Jamhari, a native of Kudus in Indonesia's Central Java region. Suffering from chest pains, Jamhari attempted to reduce the pain by rubbing clove oil on his chest. Jamhari sought a means of achieving a deeper relief and smoked his hand-rolled cigarettes after adding dried clove buds and rubber tree sap. According to the story, his asthma and chest pains vanished immediately. Word of Jamhari’s product spread rapidly among his neighbors, and the product soon became available in pharmacies as rokok cengkeh – clove cigarettes. First marketed as a medicinal product, kreteks became widely popular.

Gudang Garam
PT Gudang Garam Tbk. (Indonesian meaning for "salt warehouse") is a fifth Indonesian kretek (clove cigarette) brand/manufacturer (between Djarum and Gelora Djaja). It was founded on 26 June 1958 by Tjoa Ing Hwie, who changed his name to Surya Wonowidjojo. In 1984 control of the company was passed to Wonowidjojo's son, Rachman Halim, who subsequently became the richest man in Indonesia. Halim headed the company until his death in 2008.
Gudang Garam as the cigarette companies have an affiliation company, Head, since 2007 until 2012.
History
Early Years
In his twenties, Wonowidjojo got his big break when his uncle offered him a job working with tobacco and sauce at his kretek factory Cap 93. Cap 93 was one of the most famous kretek brands in East Java. Hard work and diligence was soon rewarded by promotion to Head of Tobacco and Sauce and eventually led to him becoming a company director.
Wonowidjojo left Cap 93 in 1956 taking fifty employees with him. He immediately started buying land and raw materials in Kediri and soon after began producing his own klobot kretek which he marketed under the brand name Inghwie. Two years later he renamed and registered his company as Pabrik Rokok Tjap Gudang Garam and a legend was born.

Haji Djamhari is a legendary figure who lived in the Holy city in the 19th century, and is believed to be the inventor or first peracik clove. Narrated, initially Djamhari suffering chest diseases, or suspected asthma. He did therapy on himself by rubbing clove oil on the chest and back. As a result, suffered the pain is reduced. Furthermore, Djamhari improve treatment with chewing cloves. But the result is better. In the end, he cloves finely chopped, then poured it on tobacco that he used to smoke. Magically, the disease is cured. People he knew began to follow in his footsteps, cloves sprinkled on tobacco for smoking. Besides efficacious cure, there is a distinct flavor of clove tobacco blended with cloves. From where kretek clove, which became known as kretek, became known and widespread. Haji Djamari of this invention, emerging home-based industries that produce kretek.

A brief history of cigarette in Indonesia. Starting from the reign of Mataram in the 16th century, growing up to the time of colonialism by the Dutch. Until late 19th century, where kretek cigarettes are mass-produced the first time.
Notes about when exactly the Indonesian population started smoking no one knows for sure. According to Thomas Stamford Raffles and De Condolle smoking and tobacco existing in Java around 1600.
In a book titled Cigarettes, Trails of History and Meaning for Development of the Nation (1987) Amen Budiman and Onghokham King wrote that Sultan Agung Mataram in 1613-1645 was a heavy smoker.
In the Holy books and history works Cigarettes Solichin Salam mentioned that “People Indonesia at that time has a habit to roll his own cigarette, in a way that very simple arrangement and form. Therefore cigarettes for indigenous peoples in Indonesia that time he has not an attractive merchandise. After the attempt to mix tobacco with various spices such as cloves, for example, or resin and fragrant roots, form the cigarette simplicity’s shift towards merchandise that is more meaningful and profitable “

But like it or not Kretek cigarettes that are made with cloves are pretty unique... in fact if you smell a funny sweet clove smell in the air it's probably coming from an Indonesian cigarette! I took my mom (obviously of legal age) to a warung rokok and she decided to give them a try and here are the results.

In 2012, the WTO ruled in favor of Indonesia, stating that a ban on kretek would be discriminatory.
