Varadero is a resort town in the province of Matanzas, Cuba, and one of the largest resort areas in the Caribbean. Varadero is also called Playa Azul, which means "blue beach" in Spanish.
It is situated on the Hicacos Peninsula, between the Bay of Cárdenas and the Straits of Florida, some 140 km east of Havana, at the eastern end of the Via Blanca highway. The peninsula is only 1.2 km wide at its widest point and is separated from the island of Cuba by the Kawama Channel. This spit of land however extends more than 20 kilometers from the mainland in a northeasterly direction and its tip, Punta Hicacos, is the northernmost point of the island of Cuba. At the northeastern end of the peninsula there is a nature reserve with virgin forests and beaches. The Hicacos Point Natural Park is a 3.12 km2 (1.20 sq mi) ecological preserve established in 1974. It contains the 250 m (820 ft) long Cave of Ambrosio, Mangón Lake (home to 31 species of birds and 24 species of reptiles) and the ruins of the La Calavera (The Skull) Salt Works (one of the first salt works to be constructed by the Spanish in the New World). The cays developed off shore, such as Cayo Piedras and Cayo Cruz del Padre are the western most part of the Sabana-Camaguey Archipelago.

I'm The Guy That's Done Everything and here's some footage from my stay at the Memories Varadero Resort! We went in April of 2014 and had an amazing stay. We did the catamaran excursion, swim with dolphin and went on a tour of Havana. A video of my time in Havana will be posted shortly. The food wasn't the greatest but we still had a blast, hope you all enjoy the video. It is kind of long but I didn't want to leave anything out! Hotel Blau Varadero**** is a very luxury hotel with a wonderful beach in Varadero, Cuba
Hotel Blau Varadero**** is a very luxury hotel and fully equipped. After a trip to Cuba it`s wonderful to relax here a view days on the beautiful beach. You will be welcomed with a glass of champagne. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. In the huge hall you will find the bar, recreation room, game room and shops. There`s a curtain of plants from the top floor. The room and bathroom were very spacious and clean. Each room has a large balcony (with a clothesline) and sea view. In the beautiful garden was the large pool with plenty of sunbeds. There were also a number of tennis courts. All meals were buffet style and beautifully decorated. There was lots of choice and the quality was very good. I can highly recommend this hotel. -

Exploring the Defunct Hotel Internacional de Varadero, Cuba
On January 16, 2015 I left for sunny Cuba to enjoy a little rest and relaxation. Having traveled to Cuba many times, I have always wanted to #urbex there. Well, this trip I had an opportunity...kinda...The Hotel Internacional de Varadero opened in 1950 and was the gem of the Varadero sky line for many years. Its a 163 room hotel that overlooks one of the most beautiful beaches and out into the Straits of Florida towards the Florida Keys. This hotel closed its doors on January 12, 2015 with guests leaving comments on TripAdvisor.com right up to the last day. In the end, sadly it appears it did not appear to be the grand hotel it once was. Our Vacation at Sol Palmeras in Varadero, Cuba 2014. This is a full video of our trip. We had a great experience at that resort and we would return there again without hesitation. The gardens and the beach is just beautiful. The food was also good, there was always something for everybody to eat. The lobby is big and clean. In case of a bad weather you can just chill in the lobby. They have lots of lounge area where you can sit and relax with a drink. The bars are very good in the lobby. The pool was always cleaned. The beach was amazing, no rocks, no seaweed and plenty of shades. We stayed on the top floor Oceanview Suite 4036. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful. I'm The Guy That's Done Everything and here's some footage from my stay at the Memories Varadero Resort! We went in April of 2014 and had an amazing stay. We did the catamaran excursion, swim with dolphin and went on a tour of Havana. A video of my time in Havana will be posted shortly. The food wasn't the greatest but we still had a blast, hope you all enjoy the video. It is kind of long but I didn't want to leave anything out! I will definitely be heading back in either 2015 or 2016 (maybe both!!)

the beautiful beach. You will be welcomed with a glass of champagne. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. In the huge hall you will find the bar, recreation room, game room and shops. There`s a curtain of plants from the top floor. The room and bathroom were very spacious and clean. Each room has a large balcony (with a clothesline) and sea view. In the beautiful garden was the large pool with plenty of sunbeds. There were also a number of tennis courts. All meals were buffet style and beautifully decorated. There was lots of choice and the quality was very good. I can highly recommend this hotel.

On January 16, 2015 I left for sunny Cuba to enjoy a little rest and relaxation. Having traveled to Cuba many times, I have always wanted to #urbex there. Well,...
On January 16, 2015 I left for sunny Cuba to enjoy a little rest and relaxation. Having traveled to Cuba many times, I have always wanted to #urbex there. Well, this trip I had an opportunity...kinda...The Hotel Internacional de Varadero opened in 1950 and was the gem of the Varadero sky line for many years. Its a 163 room hotel that overlooks one of the most beautiful beaches and out into the Straits of Florida towards the Florida Keys. This hotel closed its doors on January 12, 2015 with guests leaving comments on TripAdvisor.com right up to the last day. In the end, sadly it appears it did not appear to be the grand hotel it once was.
I walked by on Sunday morning and the place was deserted, I stood and admired the grand structure and wanted to go in so bad, but I didn’t have my GoPro. So I returned on Monday and and after a quick look around the property, it seemed quite enough. I entered the hotel via the beach side and as soon as I walked in there were people everywhere. Local workers were already starting to tear down from the inside, removing safes and curtains and furniture. I had already entered so I walked with confidence and tried to act like I belonged as much a could..with flip flops, a tank top and swim trucks, it wasn’t easy, I should have had a sign that said “TOURIST” strapped to my back. Despite my beach wear, I was able to make it into the hotel and I just started to wonder the floors, when I heard someone, I turned back. I had the chance to take in some of the old architecture and the 50’s feel of the place. I thought if I could just get of to the roof and get a couple of good shots the adventure would be worth it. Unfortunately the roof door was locks and on my way back down, I started to get yelled at by a guy at the end of a hallway. That was my qew to leave. I hustled back down the stairs and out the back door, again, trying to blend in. Once out on the beach, I felt better and headed back to my hotel.
This was a great and exhilarating experience, but a little riskier than I am used to. This hotel certainly had its heyday, and I only got to see a small portion of it. This video is a little shaker than normal because I didn’t have my proper GoPro hand rig with me and I really wish it had more structural content, but given the location I couldn’t not post this.

The rays of the tropical moonlight broke into pieces rocking on the waves. Here in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, the breeze brings the sweet smell of blooming lemon trees and burnt sugar. A quick sniff of the air was enough to know the islands are not far away. They're like green twinkling scattered emeralds in the sea and you could feel on each of them that the other one will be more unspoiled and intact than the previous one. It's an ideal home for Robinson Crusoe. Paul Monette starts his novel Havana with these lines. The atmosphere and the natural beauties of Cuba have also inspired others to write poetic lines. It's enough to think of the revolutionary poet Jose Marti and of course Hemingway whose spirit follows the traveler all the way wherever he goes in the country.
A long narrow peninsula reaches into the sea 140 km from Havana and 20 km from Matanzas and it separates the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It's Varadero, the world famous resort of the islands which was a popular destination of vacationers and foreign tourists even between the two World Wars. In the 1950s American businessmen invested here having hotels and casinos built in this way. 100000 Americans arrived here to relax and soak up the sun. Life was great. Champagne and rum flowed, cigar smoke was abundant, Caribbean music with its spinning rhythm wafted over the beach and on stage, Cuban girls danced in bikinis decorated with features. Millionaires had their luxurious villas built here. Then politics intervened, there was a revolution and the relationship between Cuba and America is strained yet today as a result. Hotels and villas were taken over by the state. In the meantime Varadero has again become the most popular tourist destination in the world but especially for Europeans.
Next to the old ones, new four and five star luxurious hotels meeting everybody's requirements have been built. The majority of them belonged to the former Spanish colonists. On the snow white sandy beach dignified royal palm trees nod. The waters crystalline, turquoise and incredible shades of blues and green. Shops sell Cuban cigars even today and at the bars of the hotels, skillful bartenders mix daiquiris, mojitos and the Cuban libre. The peninsula is closed by a barrier. Here, only taxis or hired cars can enter so tourists can have their holiday without being disturbed. The breeze blowing from the sea moderates the tropical heat. The hotel rooms are of course air conditioned. Restaurants offer specialties of the Caribbean region and international dishes as well. It's especially worth trying the roasted dishes and the aromatic fruit and there are cocktails made without alcohol too.
Cuba gives tourist from former east bloc countries a chance to reencounter their past as if they were taking a trip back in time. At the markets, we can buy mainly wood carvings and pottery as souvenirs but cigar boxes equipped with the vapor meter, original machetes, maps drawn on leather and paintings in bamboo frames can also be had. In the street, we can see small two seat motorbikes with yellow cabins which almost look like the tuktuk of Thailand but there are also carts which function as taxis here. In the city, you can take one of the open sightseeing double-deckers. In the city center, we can also see some of the old wooden villas. Among the simple small bungalows, there're some colonial palaces and luxurious vials which have been converted into restaurants. A sort of American travelling monument of the 1950s are old timers and although the most can be seen in Havana, they also add color to the panorama of the city of Varadero.
Don't be surprised if somebody starts the engine of his car with a crank. The ignition key may have been taken away by the American owner of the car 40 years ago.

After a 12 hours bumpy flight from UK we finally landed in Havana where we spent 8 days, then we took a local bus to Viñales and explored for 3 days the stunning nature, tobacco fields and wild beaches around. We decided to go south, so we traveled for 7 hours to Trinidad and we instantly fell in love with the City. One hour ride from Trinidad and we arrived to the French colonial city of Cienfuegos, which we quickly visited before coming back to the north and spending the last 4 nights in that paradise called Varadero.

Trinidad is full of palaces built by the sugar barons, while Santa Clara is the town of the legendary revolutionary, Che Guevara. Guama shows us an Indian village and a crocodile farm, Varadero offers white, sandy beaches shaded by large palm trees and luxury hotels. In the Tropicana, the band is moving to a heartwarming music. In the famous bars, as the Floridita or the Bodaguita, we can remember Hemingway, and drink from the local rum or the cocktails prepared from it, moreover we can light a good Cuban cigar as well.

As our first time skydiving, we experienced the full rollercoaster of emotions as we go through the process and prepare to jump.
This is also the introduction to the series so we can see the first glimpses at the beautiful white sandy beaches Varadero is famous for.
If you’ve never experienced jumping out of a moving plane and free-falling for 35 seconds during a death-defying 3000 metres plunge to the ground, now would be a great time to check that off your bucket list. Parachuting in Varadero also means a stunning bird’s eye view of the beach and pristine water before landing in white cozy sand. Varadero Travel Video, located on the sinuous 20km-long Hicacos peninsula, stands at the vanguard of Cuba's most important industry -- tourism. As the largest resort in the Caribbean, it guards a huge, unsubtle and constantly evolving stash of hotels (over 50), shops, banks, water activities and poolside entertainment; though its trump card is its beach, an uninterrupted 20km stretch of blond sand that is undoubtedly one of the best in the Caribbean. But, while this large, tourist-friendly, if strangely soulless, mega-resort may be essential to the Cuban economy, it offers little in the way of unique Cuban experiences. For these you'll need to escape the wrist-band wearing crowds from Canada and Europe and dip into the readily accessible hinterland for nearby 'reality checks' in Matanzas, Cárdenas or Bahía de Cochinos.
Varadero Travel Video vacation packages overseas and are content to idle for a week or two enjoying the all-inclusiveness of their resort (and why not?). However, if you're touring Cuba independently, and want to alternate your esoteric rambles with some less stressful beach life, Varadero can provide a few nights of well-earned sloth after a dusty spell on the road. For the best prices book online before you leave home, though there are plenty of economical hotels and casas particulares in the western end of the town that can be bagged on-the-spot.

After an extreme first day Sky Diving in Varadero, Troy brings the crew to go underground at the Bellamar Caves in Mantazas and take some time to cool-down from the Cuban sun. We ended up to get some serious schooling about the geography of the Varadero region from our new friend: Jesus (no joke, that is his real name!!!).
The underground experience begins in a large cave with stalagmites and stalactites growing from the floor and ceiling. Then, after a 100 ft descent down narrow corridors, you’ll find yourself surrounded by formations of small – and quite majestic – crystals.
Don’t miss the opportunity to drink water from two natural fountains: The “Fountain of Youth” and the “Fountain of Love”!!!

Despite the evidence that the young local players do not have access to the right equipment, it doesn't daunt them to get on the court with the league and make the best with what they have. Cristina, an amazing woman from Ottawa (Canada), is making huge effort to get Canadians travellers to bring and donate bike polo gear of all kind to help the young Cuban bikers.
In Cuba, it's not about being a hipster on a bike but all about having fun while staying in shape. Watch the video to see Troy score again and again and again! Using cheap road bikes, a mallet and a ball, bike polo is a super fun and affordable sport. Having never played, the three had a lot to learn and quickly as they took to the court. Turns out it was way harder than it looks, especially on the beat up old bikes they're using. That said, Troy took to it like a natural and scored every one of the Basecamper goals.

Using cheap road bikes, a mallet and a ball, bike polo is a super fun and affordable sport. Having never played, the three had a lot to learn and quickly as they took to the court. Turns out it was way harder than it looks, especially on the beat up old bikes they're using. That said, Troy took to it like a natural and scored every one of the Basecamper goals.
