Glenties (Irish: Na Gleannta, meaning "the glens") is a village in County Donegal, Ireland. It is situated where two glens meet, north-west of the Bluestack Mountains, near the confluence of two rivers. Glenties is the largest centre of population in the parish of Iniskeel. Glenties has won the Irish Tidy Towns Competition competition five times in 1958, 1959,1960, 1962 and 1995 and has won a medal many other times. The current population of Glenties is 869.
Evidence of early settlement in the area is given by the many dolmens, standing stones and earthen ringforts dating from the Bronze Age. The area became part of the baronies of Boylagh and Bannagh in 1609, which was granted to Scottish undertakers as part of the Ulster Plantation.
Glenties was a regular stopping point on the road between the established towns of Ballybofey and Killybegs, and grew from this in the 17th and 18th centuries. The town was developed as a summer home for the Marquess Conyngham in the 1820s, because of its good hunting and fishing areas. The court house and market house were built in 1843. The Bank of Ireland building was completed in 1880.
Enda Kenny (born 24 April 1951) is an Irish Fine Gael politician, and has been the Taoiseach since March 2011. He has led Fine Gael since 2002. He served as Minister for Tourism and Trade from 1994 to 1997. He is also a two-term Vice-President of the European People's Party.
Kenny has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for Mayo since 1975, having succeeded his father Henry Kenny. He is the longest-serving TD currently in Dáil Éireann, which makes him the incumbent Father of the Dáil.
Kenny led Fine Gael in the 2011 general election. He subsequently brokered an agreement with the Labour Party and formed a coalition government on 9 March 2011. He is Fine Gael's first Taoiseach since John Bruton from 1994 to 1997, and the first Fine Gael leader to win government in an election since Garret FitzGerald in 1982.
Enda Kenny was born in Derrywash, Islandeady near Castlebar, County Mayo in 1951, the third child of five. He was educated locally at St Patrick's National School, Cornanool and at St Gerald's College, Castlebar. He attended St Patrick's College of Education, Dublin, qualifying as a national teacher and was an undergraduate student at University College Galway. He worked as a primary school teacher for four years.

This 34 km east to west route across the remote Bluestack Mountains has over 1,700 metres of ascent and takes in 13 summits, including Croaghgorm, the highest point in the range. We did it over 2 days, bivvying out overnight at the summit of Croaghbane. The route we took starts from the Barnsmore Gap road where we were dropped off by a taxi, hired in Glenties. We arranged for the same taxi to collect us from a picnic area at the end of a boreen in the Owenroe valley the next day. On a clear day from the Bluestacks, the scenery over the Province of Ulster is fantastic, rewarding the walker with spectacular vistas and sweeping panoramas. There is little foot-fall on these mountains and almost no visible tracks to follow; it is impossible to move quickly over the terrain. A maze of peat hags...

Joan O'Sullivan reports on the line from Farranfore to Valentia harbour in Co Kerry. The railway to Valencia Harbour was opened in 1893. It was the most westerly point in Europe which could be reached by train. The branch (of almost 40 miles in length) left the Tralee-Mallow main line at Farranfore and headed west through some of Ireland's most spectacular scenery as it climbed through County Kerry's mountainous countryside, along Dingle Bay's southern shore.
