Red colobuses are Old World monkeys of the subgenus Piliocolobus in the genus Procolobus. Some authors elevate Piliocolobus to a full genus, limiting Procolobus to the olive colobus. They are closely related to the black-and-white colobus monkeys (genus Colobus), and some species are often found in groups with the blue monkey. The western red colobus is frequently hunted by the common chimpanzee.
The members of this subgenus are found in western, central and eastern Africa, and the species have largely allo- or parapatric distributions. Most are restricted to humid forests, but the Zanzibar red colobus prefers coastal thickets and scrub. Red colobuses are primarily arboreal and are highly sensitive to hunting and habitat destruction, and have been referred to as probably the most threatened taxonomic group of primates in Africa. If following the taxonomic treatment advocated in Mammal Species of the World, all species except the Central African red colobus are assessed by the IUCN as Endangered or Critically Endangered.

Red Colobus Monkey, Zanzibar Tanzania July 2008. Something funny happens about 1.26 into the clip.
In the Yonghali Forest of Zanzibar live a few family groups of the very rare Red Colobus monkeys: an asphalt road splits the forest in two subareas and the oldest monkeys stop the cars to let mothers and babies go across safely

I spent a week in Kibale Park, Uganda, in June 2015. Black-and-white colobus monkeys and red colobus monkeys were a common site in the trees around camp. I spent many hours watching their antics and was particularly captivated by their leaps to get from tree to tree when the canopy was sparse. At the same time, I loved how they were so good at chillaxing.
Red colobus monkeys share the Goualougo Triangle with chimpanzees. In other regions of Africa, chimpanzees have been observed consuming these monkeys, but our field researchers have not seen them preyed upon. The red colobus are locally known as "Nio," named after the almost cat-like meow that is heard in this clip. For more on the amazing species living in this area, check out www.congo-apes.org!
The "Zanzibar red colobus" is a species of red colobus monkey endemic to Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago, off the coast of Tanzania. It is also known as "Kirk's red colobus" after Sir John Kirk, the British Resident of Zanzibar who first brought it to the attention of zoological science. It is now classified as an endangered species and in the mid-1990s was adopted as the flagship species for conservation in Zanzibar. The population trend is still decreasing, and because this species is only located in the archipelago, conservationists are attempting to work with the local government to devise a proper, effective strategy to protect the population and habitat. The species has been reclassified twice; it was previously in the genus "Colobus", and more recently in the ...

This is the 2nd part of family holiday diary. The 2nd part is the great Jozani forest in Zanzibar, the last place to see a red colobus monkey in the wild & our 3 day safari in the Mikumi National Park,Tanzania (a great place to see the big African animals).
In december 2013 we made a safari to Lake Manyara, the Central Serengeti and Ndutu in the southern part of the Serengeti. The main reason for this journey was to experience a part of the Great Migration of the Gnu or Wildebeest, Zebra and Gazelles. The Serengeti did not disappoint us. After many months of drought the first rains began to fall when we arrived early december. The Serengeti plains changed color within a week from dry yellow to fresh green. These slowly from north to south moving rains, made the herds of Wildebeest leave the woodlands and crossing rivers, to the fresh pastures in the south (Ndutu) where they will give birth to their calves in February. About 350.000 animals are born within only a couple of days. This also means that the same number of animals die during their ...
Zanzibar Tales - FULL Audio Book - by George W. Bateman - African Adventure Stories - Summary excerpt (written by the author in 1901) - Thirty years ago Central Africa was what people who are fond of airing their learning would call a terra incognita. To-day its general characteristics are pretty well known. Then, as now, the little island of Zanzibar, situated just south of the equator, on the east coast, was the starting place of all expeditions into the interior, and Unguja (pronounced Oon-goo'jah), the big town of that island, the place where the preparations for plunging into the unknown were made. At that period these expeditions consisted, almost without exception, of caravans loaded with beads and cotton cloth, which were exchanged among the inland tribes for elephants' tusks and...

This month on Wildlife at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo, Host Dr. Larry Killmar takes us to the location of the Zoo's new animal hospital. This hospital will make the Zoo one of the top institutions in the country. Larry also takes us to see a couple of new animal babies, the Tufted Deer and the Colobus Monkey. Additionally, he discusses one of the biggest problems effecting wild Elephants in Africa; Poaching.
