Jo Jones
Jonathan David Samuel "Jo" Jones (October 7, 1911 – September 3, 1985) was an American jazz drummer. A band leader and pioneer in jazz percussion, Jones anchored the Count Basie Orchestra rhythm section from 1934 to 1948. He was sometimes known as Papa Jo Jones to distinguish him from younger drummer Philly Joe Jones
Biography
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Jones moved to Alabama, where he learned to play several instruments, including saxophone, piano, and drums. He worked as a drummer and tap-dancer at carnival shows until joining Walter Page's band, the Blue Devils in Oklahoma City in the late 1920s. He recorded with trumpeter Lloyd Hunter's Serenaders in 1931, and later joined pianist Count Basie's band in 1934. Jones, Basie, guitarist Freddie Green and bassist Walter Page were sometimes billed as an "All-American Rhythm section," an ideal team. Jones took a brief break for two years when he was in the military, but he remained with Basie until 1948. He participated in the Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series.

Teddy Wilson - I Got Rhythm (1956).
These recordings for Verve records were made in 1956. Besides Teddy on piano, we hear the solid bass of Gene Ramey and the ever swinging drums of `papa` Jo Jones. The interplay between these musicians is of a very high level, despite the fact that most selections on this cd are restricted to three or four minutes. Teddy plays with all the qualities as he did in the late thirties and early forties, but the rough edges are gone now. Highlights on the cd are: I Got Rhythm, Limehouse Blues and Blues For Daryl, which reminds us of the Just A Mood-session of the late thirties with Red Norvo and Harry James.The recordings are in mono, the sound is excellent. Jo Jones Trio Jonathan "Jo" Jones, (1911-1985), fue uno de los grandes "sideman" de la historia del jazz. Sólo basta echar un vistazo a su participación como baterista en mas de 1500 discos con un amplísimo abanico de músicos y cantantes para comprobarlo. Y solo tiene registrados a su nombre a penas una decena. Fue un músico capaz de adaptarse perfectamente tanto al estilo swing, cuando estuvo en la orquesta de Count Basie, como al movimiento conocido como bebop. Jo Jones, dominaba varios instrumentos además de saber bailar claqué y cantar. En los años sesenta y setenta, Jo Jones acompaña a infinidad de músicos, graba en estudio de manera continuada y deja algunos discos a su nombre interesantes, en especial el titulado "The Drums" un doble Lp en el que habla de su propia historia, de sus músicos preferidos y de las posibilidades de la batería como instrumento. Falleció en la cresta de la ola en 1985 en New York.
