Brixton is a district of London, located in the borough of Lambeth in south London. The area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London.
Brixton is mainly residential with a prominent street market and substantial retail sector. It is a multiethnic community, with a large percentage of its population being of African and Caribbean descent. It lies within Inner south London and is bordered by Stockwell, Clapham, Streatham, Camberwell, Tulse Hill and Herne Hill. The district houses the main offices of the London Borough of Lambeth.
The name Brixton is thought to originate from Brixistane, meaning the stone of Brixi, a Saxon lord. Brixi is thought to have erected a boundary stone to mark the meeting place of the ancient hundred court of Surrey. The location is unknown but is thought to be at the top of Brixton Hill, at a road known at the time as Bristow or Brixton Causeway, long before any settlement in the area. Brixton marks the rise from the marshes of North Lambeth up to the hills of Upper Norwood and Streatham. At the time the River Effra flowed from its source in Upper Norwood through Herne Hill to Brixton. At Brixton the river was crossed by low bridges for Roman roads to the south coast of Britain, now Brixton Road and Clapham Road. The main roads were connected through a network of medieval country lanes, such as Acre Lane, Coldharbour Lane, Brixton Water Lane and Lyham Road, formerly Black Lane. It was only at the end of the 18th century that villages and settlements formed around Brixton, as the original woodland was gradually reduced until the area was covered in farmland and market gardens known for game and strawberries.

Dulwich Hamlet Football Club is a football club based in Dulwich, in the London Borough of Southwark in England. The club are currently members of the Premier Division of the Isthmian League, and play at Champion Hill.
The club was formed in 1893, by Lorraine 'Pa' Wilson. In 1907 they joined both the Isthmian League and the Spartan League, leaving the latter at the end of the 1907–08 season. In 1919–20 the club won its first Isthmian League title, winning the league on goal average against Nunhead. They also won the FA Amateur Cup, beating Tufnell Park 1–0 in the final at the Den.
The club won the league again in 1925–26, and the FA Amateur Cup for a second time in 1931–32 win a 7–1 win against Marine in the final. The following season the club won their third league title. In 1933–34 they reached the Amateur Cup final again, but lost 2–1 to Leyton. The two clubs met in the final again in 1936–37, with Dulwich winning 2–0.
In 1948–49 the club won the Isthmian League for a fourth time. A fifth Isthmian League title – in the restructured First Division – was won in 1977–78, but after several years of gradual decline, the club finished bottom of the Premier Division in 1989–90, and were relegated to Division One. They were promoted back to the Premier Division at the end of the 1991–92 season after finishing third in Division One. In 1998–99 the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1948, losing 1–0 to Southport.

Storyhero journalist Jordan Wade traveled to London in 2012 to capture the cultural buzz of the London Games. This was one of the stories he co-produced for CBC; London's Brixton neighborhood used to be one of the city's poorest, with a very high unemployment and deplorable crime rate in the 1980s and 1990s. As recently as 2011, there were riots in the borough, an echo of disturbances in 1985 and 1995. However, as the multicultural neighborhood greets the London Games as well as the 50th anniversary of Jamaican independence, there is an air of optimism and a new prosperity in Brixton. Wade talks to community leaders, and visiting Canadians, about the cultural revival.
On Friday 25th January 2013 Brixton's Dogstar hosted a January DJ extravaganza featuring the legendary Arthur Baker and the iconic Grandmaster Flash along with Dogstar residents Disastronaut, Bella Taylor, Out & Down DJs & the Get Low Cartel. Bailiffs use heavy-handed tactics to clear protestors and get inside Clarence House, Rushcroft Road, Brixton. It was one of six mansion blocks cleared of squatters by Lambeth Council, using dozens of bailiffs dressed in hard hats and boiler suits. Some of the 75 residents targeted had lived in their flats for more than 15 years.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Expressive long-time Brixton resident Mike Urban, contrasted Brixton of yesteryear, a very radicalised place with that of today and points out the tender truth that whilst ‘Brixton has always been about change, it’s now about exclusive change’. And he leaves us with the poignant reminder that at a soup kitchen and champagne bar opened at around the same time in the area. Mike has been documenting Brixton's changes for the past 20 years. He runs the hugely popular urban75.com, now one of the UK’s longest running independent sites. Crowdfunded for 15 years, the site carries no advertising, and includes a very active Brixton-based forum, as well as local photo resources, features on Brixton life and a...

Today I visited the Brixton Street Market, place in London which I often have heard mentioned when people spoke about exotic foods, but somehow haven't seen yet. So my first impression is that its not really very big and while some years ago I would have thought that looks like Middle-Eastern or Afro-Caribbean market, today I think its something rather typical for London, as there are several similar markets around. When I say Middle-Eastern or Afro-Caribbean, I mean not only the exotic foods, but also the ambient, the faces of the people, the stalls without prices and covered sometimes with fruits and foods that I haven't seen yet in my life and strangely enough the prices are not really fixed and the vendors often decide on the moment how much to ask for any specific thing.

Reach into the valley of the shadow of success
Over the cold shoulder I can't breathe deep or roll away the stone
