Fathom Events and BBC Worldwide are bringing “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” to the big screen for a special two-night event on Tuesday, January 5 at 7:30pm (local time) and again on Wednesday, January 6 at 7:30 p.m. local time.
Academy Awards® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, and Emmy Award® winner, Martin Freeman, debut on the big screen in their iconic roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in this feature length special set in London 1895. Co-written by series creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, this special episode also features series regulars Amanda Abbington, Rupert Graves and Una Stubbs.
The series “Sherlock” audaciously moved Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic “consulting detective” from his original Victorian setting to modern day London, with results that have been a hit with audiences and largely praised by critics. London was more than just a background for Doyle. IT was almost a character in many of the original Holmes stories. The earlier Granada TV series which starred Jeremy Brett as Holmes was widely considered definitive by many Doyle fans, but the difficulties in believably recreating Victorian London sometimes dictated a preference for adapting stories with country house settings. Utilizing a contemporary setting has freed the producers of “Sherlock” to shoot in London with impressive results.
Gatiss, in addition, has been quoted as finding some recent adaptations of Doyle too reverential and slow-moving, preferring the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce movies of the thirties and forties, most of which were set during World War II.
The show has sold to over 240 territories across the world, won 12 BAFTAs, 7 Emmys® and a Peabody Award as well as accolades at the Edinburgh TV Festival and the Television Critics Association in the U.S. Sherlock has made its mark in U.S. pop-culture being one of only three British TV shows that have appeared on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.
“Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” brings the premise full circle. Many fans, enamored of Cumberbatch and Freeman’s interpretations of Holmes and Watson, have wondered what it would be like to see the duo in a Victorian setting. Now they have the chance.
Event audiences will also have the opportunity to enjoy exclusive extras including a guided set tour of 221B Baker Street hosted by co-Writer Steven Moffat and a “making of” short feature starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, and the makers of “Sherlock.”
Locally, “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” will be screened at the Regal Cinemas Colonie Center Stadium 13 & RPX, and the Regal Cinemas Crossgates Stadium 18 & IMAX. Tickets are available through Fathomevents.com/event/sherlock, Fandango.com or at the theaters.
