La Confédération du Canada désigne le processus, culminant le 1er juillet 1867, par lequel une union fut formée parmi les provinces, colonies, et territoires de l'Amérique du Nord britannique afin de former un nouvel État fédéral : le Dominion du Canada, un dominion de l'Empire britannique. Cette confédération est la continuité de l'Acte d'union de 1840 et vise à rendre les Canadiens-Français encore plus minoritaire dans une union des colonies britanniques d'Amérique du Nord. Point positif, les Canadiens-Français bien que minoritaire au sein de la fédération canadienne, deviennent majoritaire au sein de la province de Québec. C'est surtout à partir de la Confédération de 1867 que les Anglais du Canada commencèrent à s'identifier par le mot "Canadians".
Le Résistance Québécoise débuta dès le lendemain de la conférence de Charlottetown, et progressa nettement après la conférence de Québec, entre autres grâce au manifeste d'Antoine-Aimé Dorion. C'est le début de la division des Québécois en deux camps: fédéralistes et anti-fédéralistes (camps qui existent encore aujourd'hui). Cette résistance fit peur et John A. MacDonald. Il laisse sous entendre d'ailleurs dans une lettre adressée à Leonard Tilley le 8 octobre 1866 que le Bas-Canada (Québec) en entier se mobilisera et que ce serait la fin de la constitution canadienne. La constitution sera donc imposée de force au peuple sans aucun vote populaire.

In The Unfinished Revolution: Reconstruction and After, 1865-1890, Professor Eric Foner examines the pivotal but misunderstood era of Reconstruction that followed the Civil War, the first effort in American history to construct an interracial democracy. Beginning with a discussion of the dramatic change in historians’ interpretations of the period in the last two generations, Foner goes on to discuss how Reconstruction turned on issues of continued relevance today. Among these are: who is an American citizen and what are citizens’ rights; what is the relationship between political and economic freedom; which has the primary responsibility for protecting Americans’ rights – the federal or state governments; and how should public authorities respond to episodes of terrorism? The course explores the rewriting of the laws and Constitution to incorporate the principle of equality regardless of race; the accomplishments and failings of Reconstruction governments in the South; the reasons for violent opposition in the South and for the northern retreat from Reconstruction; and the consolidation at the end of the 19th century of a new system of white supremacy.
This course is part of the series, The Civil War and Reconstruction, which introduces students to the most pivotal era in American history. The Civil War transformed the nation by eliminating the threat of secession and destroying the institution of slavery. It raised questions that remain central to our understanding of ourselves as a people and a nation — the balance of power between local and national authority, the boundaries of citizenship, and the meanings of freedom and equality. The series will examine the causes of the war, the road to secession, the conduct of the Civil War, the coming of emancipation, and the struggle after the war to breathe meaning into the promise of freedom for four million emancipated slaves. One theme throughout the series is what might be called the politics of history — how the world in which a historian lives affects his or her view of the past, and how historical interpretations reinforce or challenge the social order of the present.
Eric Foner, DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, is one of the most prominent historians in the United States. Professor Foner is the author or editor of over twenty books concentrating on the intersections of intellectual, political and social history and the history of American race relations. His recent book, The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the Bancroft Prize, and the Lincoln Prize. He is the author of Give Me Liberty!: An American History, a widely-used survey textbook of U. S. history published by W. W. Norton. Additionally, he is the recipient of the Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching from Columbia University. He is one of only two persons ever to serve as president of the three major professional organizations: the American Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, and Society of American Historians. As co-curator of two award-winning historical exhibitions, and through frequent appearances in newspapers and magazines and on radio and television discussion programs, he has also endeavored to bring historical knowledge to a broad public outside the university.

"Of course every museum should have something like this" says Pit Vinandy, referring to the virtual reality component at Fort Thüngen Museum and the City Museum of Luxembourg.
There, his team has implemented an immersive way to connect to local history, a method to time travel and experience culture and society as it was hundreds of years ago.
With the help of two Oculus Rift VR headsets and 10 computers, visitors can role-play 1867, a crucial year not only for tiny Luxembourg: sandwiched between rivals Germany and France, the little country became known due to the "Luxembourg crises", itself a turning point for the whole of Europe at the time and the burning question at the time resonates today: will people of this multi-cultural continent grow closer together and overcome their differences or will the leaders of countries perpetually in conflict continue to let armed response rein supreme?
Pit Vinandy and team have created a digital simulation of the Fort Thüngen and the Pfaffenthal region of Luxembourg City inside the virtual world of Second Life.
Accessible from all over the world, at all hours of the day, it quickly became home to a passionate international role-playing community, making the digital structures come alive and truly vibrant.
Will it replace traditional teaching of history? It certainly won't says Pit. The goal, he explains, is to enable learning history in a playful way, connecting to the inner child that with wide eyed curiosity and free of intellectual restraint simply revels in the joy of exploring the world, no matter if physically real or simply emotionally resonating.

This is a 3/4 replica of the patent drawing for the Otto & Langen atmospheric engine.
This is a free piston engine that was designed to run on early "producer gas", while this one runs on hydrogen.
The cycle is controlled by the cams that only operate when a power stroke is required. The cams are started when the piston rod reaches the bottom and causes the pawl to engage the spinning ratchet. The first event is that a lever opens the intake valve and pushes the piston rod up about 4 inches to draw a charge into the cylinder. This then ignites, driving the piston up against air in the upper end of the cylinder. The resulting air pressure above the piston then produces the downward power stroke, spinning a one-way clutch to turn the output shaft.
After the energy has been transferred to the output shaft, the piston gradually descends as exhaust gas exits the lower end of the cylinder.
Otto & Langen continued developing this engine for many years, producing about 5000 of them. It was low power, but very fuel efficient, since the free piston allowed full use of the energy in the explosion. The biggest of these was only 3 hp, standing 12 feet tall, and requiring a very heavy foundation to handle the pounding recoil.
Lighting was marginal, next year we'll try some fill lighting.

"Of course every museum should have something like this" says Pit Vinandy, referring to the virtual reality component at Fort Thüngen Museum and the City Museum of Luxembourg. There, his team has implemented an immersive way to connect to local history, a method to time travel and experience culture and society as it was hundreds of years ago. With the help of two Oculus Rift VR headsets and 10 computers, visitors can role-play 1867, a crucial year not only for tiny Luxembourg: sandwiched between rivals Germany and France, the little country became known due to the "Luxembourg crises", itself a turning point for the whole of Europe at the time and the burning question at the time resonates today: will people of this multi-cultural continent grow closer together and overcome their differences or will the leaders of countries perpetually in conflict continue to let armed response rein supreme? Pit Vinandy and team have created a digital simulation of the Fort Thüngen and the Pfaffenthal region of Luxembourg City inside the virtual world of Second Life. Accessible from all over the world, at all hours of the day, it quickly became home to a passionate international role-playing community, making the digital structures come alive and truly vibrant. Will it replace traditional teaching of history? It certainly won't says Pit. This is a 3/4 replica of the patent drawing for the Otto & Langen atmospheric engine. This is a free piston engine that was designed to run on early "producer gas", while this one runs on hydrogen. The cycle is controlled by the cams that only operate when a power stroke is required. The cams are started when the piston rod reaches the bottom and causes the pawl to engage the spinning ratchet. The first event is that a lever opens the intake valve and pushes the piston rod up about 4 inches to draw a charge into the cylinder. This then ignites, driving the piston up against air in the upper end of the cylinder. The resulting air pressure above the piston then produces the downward power stroke, spinning a one-way clutch to turn the output shaft. After the energy has been transferred to the output shaft, the piston gradually descends as exhaust gas exits the lower end of the cylinder. Otto & Langen continued developing this engine for many years, producing about 5000 of them. It was low power, but very fuel efficient, since the free piston allowed full use of the energy in the explosion. The biggest of these was only 3 hp, standing 12 feet tall, and requiring a very heavy foundation to handle the pounding recoil. Lighting was marginal, next year we'll try some fill lighting. Otto & Langen Atmospheric Engine 1864-1867
This is a 3/4 replica of the patent drawing for the Otto & Langen atmospheric engine. This is a free piston engine that was designed to run on early "producer gas", while this one runs on hydrogen. The cycle is controlled by the cams that only operate when a power stroke is required. The cams are started when the piston rod reaches the bottom and causes the pawl to engage the spinning ratchet. The first event is that a lever opens the intake valve and pushes the piston rod up about 4 inches to draw a charge into the cylinder. This then ignites, driving the piston up against air in the upper end of the cylinder. The resulting air pressure above the piston then produces the downward power stroke, spinning a one-way clutch to turn the output shaft. After the energy has been transferre... -

La Confédération du Canada désigne le processus, culminant le 1er juillet 1867, par lequel une union fut formée parmi les provinces, colonies, et territoires de l'Amérique du Nord britannique afin de former un nouvel État fédéral : le Dominion du Canada, un dominion de l'Empire britannique. Cette confédération est la continuité de l'Acte d'union de 1840 et vise à rendre les Canadiens-Français encore plus minoritaire dans une union des colonies britanniques d'Amérique du Nord. Point positif, les Canadiens-Français bien que minoritaire au sein de la fédération canadienne, deviennent majoritaire au sein de la province de Québec. C'est surtout à partir de la Confédération de 1867 que les Anglais du Canada commencèrent à s'identifier par le mot "Canadians".
Le Résistance Québécoise débuta dès le lendemain de la conférence de Charlottetown, et progressa nettement après la conférence de Québec, entre autres grâce au manifeste d'Antoine-Aimé Dorion. C'est le début de la division des Québécois en deux camps: fédéralistes et anti-fédéralistes (camps qui existent encore aujourd'hui). Cette résistance fit peur et John A. MacDonald. Il laisse sous entendre d'ailleurs dans une lettre adressée à Leonard Tilley le 8 octobre 1866 que le Bas-Canada (Québec) en entier se mobilisera et que ce serait la fin de la constitution canadienne. La constitution sera donc imposée de force au peuple sans aucun vote populaire.

In The Unfinished Revolution: Reconstruction and After, 1865-1890, Professor Eric Foner examines the pivotal but misunderstood era of Reconstruction that followed the Civil War, the first effort in American history to construct an interracial democracy. Beginning with a discussion of the dramatic change in historians’ interpretations of the period in the last two generations, Foner goes on to discuss how Reconstruction turned on issues of continued relevance today. Among these are: who is an American citizen and what are citizens’ rights; what is the relationship between political and economic freedom; which has the primary responsibility for protecting Americans’ rights – the federal or state governments; and how should public authorities respond to episodes of terrorism? The course explores the rewriting of the laws and Constitution to incorporate the principle of equality regardless of race; the accomplishments and failings of Reconstruction governments in the South; the reasons for violent opposition in the South and for the northern retreat from Reconstruction; and the consolidation at the end of the 19th century of a new system of white supremacy.
This course is part of the series, The Civil War and Reconstruction, which introduces students to the most pivotal era in American history. The Civil War transformed the nation by eliminating the threat of secession and destroying the institution of slavery. It raised questions that remain central to our understanding of ourselves as a people and a nation — the balance of power between local and national authority, the boundaries of citizenship, and the meanings of freedom and equality. The series will examine the causes of the war, the road to secession, the conduct of the Civil War, the coming of emancipation, and the struggle after the war to breathe meaning into the promise of freedom for four million emancipated slaves. One theme throughout the series is what might be called the politics of history — how the world in which a historian lives affects his or her view of the past, and how historical interpretations reinforce or challenge the social order of the present.
Eric Foner, DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, is one of the most prominent historians in the United States. Professor Foner is the author or editor of over twenty books concentrating on the intersections of intellectual, political and social history and the history of American race relations. His recent book, The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the Bancroft Prize, and the Lincoln Prize. He is the author of Give Me Liberty!: An American History, a widely-used survey textbook of U. S. history published by W. W. Norton. Additionally, he is the recipient of the Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching from Columbia University. He is one of only two persons ever to serve as president of the three major professional organizations: the American Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, and Society of American Historians. As co-curator of two award-winning historical exhibitions, and through frequent appearances in newspapers and magazines and on radio and television discussion programs, he has also endeavored to bring historical knowledge to a broad public outside the university.

With the help of two Oculus Rift VR headsets and 10 computers, visitors can role-play 1867, a crucial year not only for tiny Luxembourg: sandwiched between rivals Germany and France, the little country became known due to the "Luxembourg crises", itself a turning point for the whole of Europe at the time and the burning question at the time resonates today: will people of this multi-cultural continent grow closer together and overcome their differences or will the leaders of countries perpetually in conflict continue to let armed response rein supreme?
Pit Vinandy and team have created a digital simulation of the Fort Thüngen and the Pfaffenthal region of Luxembourg City inside the virtual world of Second Life.
Accessible from all over the world, at all hours of the day, it quickly became home to a passionate international role-playing community, making the digital structures come alive and truly vibrant.
Will it replace traditional teaching of history? It certainly won't says Pit. The goal, he explains, is to enable learning history in a playful way, connecting to the inner child that with wide eyed curiosity and free of intellectual restraint simply revels in the joy of exploring the world, no matter if physically real or simply emotionally resonating.

This is a 3/4 replica of the patent drawing for the Otto & Langen atmospheric engine.
This is a free piston engine that was designed to run on early "producer gas", while this one runs on hydrogen.
The cycle is controlled by the cams that only operate when a power stroke is required. The cams are started when the piston rod reaches the bottom and causes the pawl to engage the spinning ratchet. The first event is that a lever opens the intake valve and pushes the piston rod up about 4 inches to draw a charge into the cylinder. This then ignites, driving the piston up against air in the upper end of the cylinder. The resulting air pressure above the piston then produces the downward power stroke, spinning a one-way clutch to turn the output shaft.
After the energy has been transferred to the output shaft, the piston gradually descends as exhaust gas exits the lower end of the cylinder.
Otto & Langen continued developing this engine for many years, producing about 5000 of them. It was low power, but very fuel efficient, since the free piston allowed full use of the energy in the explosion. The biggest of these was only 3 hp, standing 12 feet tall, and requiring a very heavy foundation to handle the pounding recoil.
Lighting was marginal, next year we'll try some fill lighting.
