Judy Collins welcomes Leonard Cohen to her PBS TV concert performance in this video clip from January 1976. They perform Cohen's song, "Suzanne," which Judy had recorded for her 1966 landmark album, In My Life. This is a new copy of the footage, and replaces an older one on this channel that had over 630,000 viewings. This new one has better quality video and includes my new embedded ID tag. I have copied and carried over some of the comments from the previous posting. This footage is taken from a PBS TV program, broadcast over 30 years ago in monaural sound, and captured on a Sony SuperBeta hi-fi deck. Phil Saviano, Boston, MA aka Beta hi-fi on YouTube

Social and communication theorists Nick Couldry and Andreas Hepp draw on their recent book "The Mediated Construction of Reality" (Polity 2016) to explore what happens to the concept and practice of 'social order' in the era of datafication. Today we are living in an era not just of mediatization, but deep mediatization where every element of social process and social life is composed of elements that have already been mediated. This shifts the question of media's 'influence' on the social into a higher-dimensional problem. Datafication is a good example of this, and its tension with classical forms of social phenomenology will be discussed in detail in the talk. Developing particularly the social theory of Norbert Elias (and his concept of 'figuration'), Couldry and Hepp explore how socia...

Speaker: Professor Julie Cohen, Anne Barron Chair: Professor Nick Couldry Recorded on 11 March 2015 in Old Theatre, Old Building. The problem of control over information flows has emerged as a doubly critical vantage point from which to interrogate the exercise of power and the pursuit of justice. Scholars of law and communications have come to recognize that in the networked information society, the dialogue between truth and power is mediated by the code. The Internet has been hailed as the ultimate medium for speaking truth to power, but networked information technologies also can become means for embedding power and entrenching inequality. Information and network protocols also have become sources of great wealth and competitive advantage. Struggles to shape-or even simply to unders...

Julie E. Cohen, Professor of Law, Georgetown University Law Center (Feb 23, 2009 at Case Western Reserve University, School of Law) In recent years, the law has been asked to respond to a variety of disputes involving accessibility of information and related technical standards and practices. These disputes cover the waterfront from the design of proprietary media players to network neutrality to privacy protection for search queries. So far, the law has been unable to generate compelling discourses and principles for evaluating them. Prof. Cohen offers another way of thinking about issues of accessibility and unauthorized access. The reference point for this exercise is not be innovation, competition or expressive freedom, but rather the concept of everyday practice, a term intended to ...

Leonard Cohen revisits his house in Hydra, where he wrote Bird on a Wire ( "and there's the wire"!)and many other songs. This is the house he shared with Marianne, his muse, and the Marianne of SO LONG MARIANNE . He is accompanied by his backing singers Perla Batalla and Julie Chistensen. Part of the 1988 film SONGS FROM THE LIFE OF LEONARD COHEN. During the interview for that film I asked him whether his Marianne was the same Marianne as David Blue's Marianne. "How do you know that?" he asked. But of course it was in his lyrics: I loved Marianne in the winter In the loft of her favorite lover She was growing older The winter nights were cold She told me I'm frightened I said yes I know Her eyes held me to her They burned with such a fire For the saints on the walls Holy candles ...
