This video presents the story of John, who got Lyme disease from a tick bite, while on a camping trip with his son. John talks about his early symptoms and his diagnosis by his physician, Dr. Heaton. Dr. Heaton discusses some common concerns that patients have about Lyme disease. The video concludes with John suggesting some tips for avoiding tick bites and Lyme disease.
Lyme disease is spread by the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Over 30,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported each year. Most cases occur in New England, the mid-Atlantic states, and the Upper Midwest. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Lyme disease is typically treated with a 10-21 day course of antibiotics.

A good night’s sleep is critical to being alert, focused, and productive during the day. Yet too many Americans, however, just don’t get enough sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 30 percent of Americans sleep less than six hours a night – falling far short of the seven to nine hours that most sleep experts recommend.
Why aren’t we sleeping enough? There are a few reasons. The CDC says it’s because 50 to 70 million Americans suffer from insomnia or other sleep disorders."

COVER and REPEL. REMOVE COLLECTED WATER. KEEP MOSQUITOES OUT OF YOUR HOME, and if you’re Pregnant and have Sex, USE CONDOMS.
ALL of these actions are necessary. Taken together and repeated as recommended, these steps will help protect you, your family, and your community from getting Zika.
COVER and REPEL to keep mosquitos from biting you. Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. Apply mosquito repellent, and sleep under a bed net and cover cribs and strollers with mosquito netting
REMOVE CONTAINERS THAT COLLECT WATER to eliminate places where mosquitoes can rest and lay eggs. Empty collected water at least once a week, and scrub containers to remove mosquito eggs. Cover containers so they don’t collect water when it rains. Throw away trash or unused containers with collected water.
KEEP MOSQUITOES OUT OF YOUR HOME. Use screens on windows and doors. Once a week, empty and scrub all containers inside your home that hold water like vases or flowerpot saucers. And, use an indoor flying insect fogger or spray insecticide to kill mosquitoes.
Zika virus stays in the body for a while, and can be sexually transmitted by a man to his sex partner through semen. If you’re pregnant, Zika can harm your pregnancy. If you are pregnant, use a condom every time you have sex with a male partner during your pregnancy.
Use a condom, the right way, every time you have vaginal, anal, or mouth to penis oral sex to prevent the spread of Zika virus. Using a condom can protect your pregnancy.
IF YOU’RE NOT PREGNANT, and not trying to get pregnant, talk to your health care provider about effective contraceptive measures.

Doctors and scientists have not yet found what causes chronic fatigue syndrome. Infections and other medical and biological events are among the many possible triggers, but with no certain cause this disease is difficult to diagnose. A systematic approach to evaluating people with persistent symptoms combined with new diagnostic criteria offers hope for more accurate and faster diagnosis.

In the last 50 years, incidence has increased 30-fold by expanding into new countries and new areas. Chikungunya often occurs in large outbreaks with high infection rates, affecting more than a third of the population in areas where the virus is circulating.
