The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), founded in 1964, provides advice and guidance on effective control of vaccine-preventable diseases in the U.S. civilian population. The ACIP develops written recommendations for routine administration of vaccines to the pediatric and adult populations, along with vaccination schedules regarding appropriate periodicity, dosage, and contraindications. ACIP statements are official federal recommendations for the use of vaccines and immune globulins in the U.S., and are published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The overall goals of the ACIP are to provide advice to government agencies for reducing the incidence of vaccine preventable diseases and to increase the safe usage of vaccines and related biological products. In the U.S., immunizations have resulted in the eradication of smallpox, polio, measles, and rubella, and disease rates from vaccine-preventable diseases have been reduced by 99%.

Vaccination is the administration of antigenic material (a vaccine) to stimulate an individual's immune system to develop adaptive immunity to a pathogen. Vaccines can prevent or ameliorate morbidity from infection. When a sufficiently large percentage of a population has been vaccinated, this results in herd immunity. The effectiveness of vaccination has been widely studied and verified; for example, the influenza vaccine, the HPV vaccine, and the chicken pox vaccine. Vaccination is the most effective method of preventing infectious diseases; widespread immunity due to vaccination is largely responsible for the worldwide eradication of smallpox and the restriction of diseases such as polio, measles, and tetanus from much of the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that licensed vaccines are currently available to prevent or contribute to the prevention and control of twenty-five preventable infections.
The active agent of a vaccine may be intact but inactivated (non-infective) or attenuated (with reduced infectivity) forms of the causative pathogens, or purified components of the pathogen that have been found to be highly immunogenic (e.g., outer coat proteins of a virus). Toxoids are produced for immunization against toxin-based diseases, such as the modification of tetanospasmin toxin of tetanus to remove its toxic effect but retain its immunogenic effect.
ACP past president Dr. Sandra Fryhofer, a member of ACP's Immunization Committee, discusses the key changes to the 2013 ACIP adult immunization schedule published in Annals of Internal Medicine http://annals.org/article.aspx?articleid=1567229. Philadelphia, January 29, 2012 -- The Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) announced its recommended 2013 adult immunization schedule that includes important updates to the pneumococcal, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis), and influenza vaccines. Because current vaccination rates are low, ACIP also urges health care providers to regularly assess patient vaccination histories and implement intervention strategies to increase adherence. This recommendation will be published in...

www.rxwiki.com Many parents know that the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine can protect against cervical cancer. But new evidence suggests that some US teens are still not getting vaccinated. In 2011, the US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended the routine use of the HPV vaccine for all teenage boys. But a new study found that HPV vaccination coverage is still relatively low among this group — leaving many teen boys susceptible to infection as they mature into adulthood.

The stars so far
Stay up all night
They've got some kind of way
To shine their light
I'd like to have one
Hold it tight
Start a fire
Burn all night
You have to go
I wanted you to stay
But just like you said
After you left i was okay
The sheets all broke and
The coals are dead
Migration high up
Above my head
You know the way
You've got some kind of way
It comes so natural
But seasons change
Now it's hot like summer
Winter's days are numbered
You have such cold hands
But that weather lifted after you left
