Homeless shelters are a type of homeless service agency which provide temporary residence for homeless individuals and families. Shelters exist to provide clients with safety and protection from exposure to the weather while simultaneously reducing the environmental impact on the community. They are similar to, but distinguishable from, various types of emergency shelters, which are typically operated for specific circumstances and populations - fleeing natural disasters or abusive social circumstances. Extreme weather conditions create problems similar to disaster management scenarios, and are handled with warming centers, which typically operate for short durations during adverse weather.
Hundreds of homeless individuals die each year from diseases, untreated medical conditions, lack of nutrition, starvation, and freezing to death. In a mild-wintered San Francisco in 1998, the death rate for homeless people was 58% larger than that of the general population. In New Orleans, approximately 10,000 homeless were unaccounted for after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Line 22 is the only bus route that runs 24 hours a day in Silicon Valley. At night, homeless people have made it their informal shelter in an effort to avoid sleeping on the street. This situation is in stark contrast with the image filmmaker Elizabeth Lo had of Silicon Valley, which is why, in the course of a week, she joined them on the bus line. "Hotel 22" is a poignant Op-Doc video that captures a crude reality of homelessness that may have gone unseen. A 35 sq ft structure made with Coroplast campaign signs. I gathered 7 large signs and some smaller ones, including the lumber and screws, and set out to construct a small home, utilizing the best ideas from shelters I've made in the past. This shelter could be used for a tent city individual, or an office, an art studio, kids fort, storage, spare bedroom, or a back yard residents for a youngster almost ready to live on there own.
Homelessness is on the rise in Minnesota. A statewide survey released by Wilder Research in March found the number of people who are homeless has increased about 6 percent since the last count in 2009, to more than 10,200. Nearly half of the homeless are 21 or younger. On any given night, more than 100 families stay at People Serving People (PSP), a homeless shelter in downtown Minneapolis. Residents include about 200 children, who are on average 6 years old. The shelter is at capacity and has been for several months. MPR News spent some time with one of the children at the shelter, a third-grader named Paris. She and her family have been living at PSP for just over a month.
Follow me on http://Twitter.com/MikeStaniforth This is my debut documentary starring some unforgettable characters who all have their own personal, and sometimes sad, stories to tell. With homelessness on the rise in the UK and with more people sleeping rough on the streets than ever, I decided to speak to the homeless people of Manchester to see just how bad it is. With the council only providing a 'snap shot' of the true statistics of how bad the situation really is, we go on a journey with some of the people that the council are refusing to acknowledge. ------------------ With thanks to Claude Lee Sadik, without whom this film couldn't have been made, thank you for accompanying me for the strange and wonderful adventures around Manchester at very unsociable hours. MARYSVILLE -- The 14 Forward shelter was dedicated Tuesday just two months after the concept of a transitional housing complex created from storage sheds was conceived. Twenty two-bed units that will be insulated and furnished will provide temporary shelter and services to the homeless, getting them ready for more permanent housing. Raelynn Butcher was instrumental in giving input to the program. She's been homeless for a dozen years and is known as the mayor of the Hollywood homeless encampment on the Yuba River.

http://www.flocktv.org. In this Christian homeless / poor television documentary, we're taking you to a Christian homeless shelter in Fort Worth, Texas called Beautiful Feet Ministries where the poor are cared for physically and spiritually. In this television show, you'll see Christian values in action as the poor are treated the way Jesus would treat them. Bible Stories Ep 1 - The Christmas Story We believe in the healing power of the Lord for our world and want to create a network that will glorify His name. We also believe that Christian entertainment should come from Christian organizations, not from for-profit corporations. As a result, none of our leaders receive any payments or benefits and all donations go directly to producing the shows, charity and homeless shelter.

This short documentary explores the crisis of homelessness in America. It's told from the perspective of four homeless people living on the streets of Boston. Each one shares a piece of their story and what it's like to be homeless. The film aims to bring awareness to the plight of people living without shelter, food or warmth. It was produced in 2004 while I was still in college. While it is a little dramatic, the message is an important one, and still needs to be shared.
