How the AWACS Keeps Us Safe
The E-3 Sentry is a modified Boeing 707/320 commercial airframe with a rotating radar dome. AWACS is equipped with an integrated command and control battle management, or C2BM, surveillance, target detection, and tracking platform. The aircraft provides the Joint Air Operations Center with an accurate, real-time picture of the battlespace. Over the next four decades, the E-3 has played a vital role in almost every military conflict due to the aircraft being flown by both the US Air Force and NATO Alliance Forces. As Ukraine reclaims land in its conflict with the invading Russians, it is evident that western information, notably the comprehensive image provided by the AWACS, has been a crucial factor in their victory. IAF Needs Additional Airborne Early Warning And Control Systems
The IAF needs to enhance its resources in terms of Airborne Early Warning as also Airborne Warning and Control Systems. Currently, the holdings are barely enough to meet the threat from our western neighbours. As far as the Chinese are concerned, their resources are huge, and they are adding more at a fast pace.
The IAF is exploiting various possibilities with Brazil having decided to stop production of Embraer aircraft. Certain models of Boeing aircraft are also being tried out.
Notwithstanding the challenges the IAF is gearing up to enhance its inventory.

Inside The Air Force’s Flying Radar Fleet
As the recent Chinese spy balloon encounter showed, keeping the skies safe is a tough job. For decades the U.S. Air Force has relied on the E-3 Sentry, and the most recent version, the E-3G, has been upgraded with more modern electronics and software to keep up with new threats.
'The best way to describe it is kind of like the quarterback in the sky," said Air Force Col. Keven Coyle, commander of the 552nd Air Control Wing. "It's the job of the E-3 to surveil, to layout the enemies arrayed, and then allow our friendly forces to be able to be set up in a way that allows them to fight with the greatest capacity."
The Air Force is hoping that the E-7 Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft built by Boeing can take over down the line if the Air Force needs to retire some of the older Sen...

ELTA-ELW-2085&2090 - Airborne Early Warning & Control Systems
ELW-2085 - CAEW - Conformal Airborne Early Warning & Control
A new Generation AEW Platform: The long-range, high performance, multi-sensor AEW introduces a new level of performance to airborne early warning, tactical surveillance of airborne and surface targets, and the gathering of signal intelligence.
Unique Integration of Sensors: The ELW-2085's four sensors are: Radar, IFF, ESM/ELINT and CSM/COMINT. A unique fusion technique continuously cross-correlates data generated by all sensors: this data is combined with an automatically initiated active search by one sensor for specific targets detected by other sensors.
Radar: A radar with conformal phased array antennas for simultaneous coverage and instantaneous focus on selected targets. The ELW-2085 advanced radar has several conf...

The Air Force is hoping that the E-7 Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft built by Boeing can take over down the line if the Air Force needs to retire some of the older Sentry aircraft over the coming years. In the most recent budget, Congress appropriated an additional $200 million for the Air Force to develop a prototype to meet that need.
"Congress has approved the money for the first two prototypes, which is a very good thing for the Air Force," said Lt. Col. Peter "Beast" Bastien, Air Combat Command directorate of plans, programs and requirements, airborne weapons systems and futures chief. "On the other hand, there's a physical limitation on how fast you can turn a roll of aluminum into an E-7."
The age of the E-3s has made replacement parts more difficult to procure, and the mechanical breakdowns inherent in such an old aircraft are impacting mission rates. Congress prohibited the Air Force from starting to retire the bulk of the current fleet of Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft until the Secretary of the Air Force submits an acquisition strategy to Congress for a replacement. But even then, it could be years until a replacement is operational.
"Having the first one out in 2027 is not bad from an acquisition point of view, " said Daniel Goure, senior vice president with the Lexington Institute, "Even for a system that's been in some variants in the field for a long time, that's pretty darn quick, but if there is a way to get them quicker we really need to consider that in order to make sure that we don't lose the capability because of a problem with the aging AWACS."

The ELW-2085 advanced radar has several conformal phased array antennas. They are mounted on the fuselage of the aircraft and can provide up to full 360 degrees coverage.
Advantages: Radar beams can be pointed at any direction in space at any time, with the beam's parameters fully controlled by the radar computer. The radar employs a flexible time-space energy management technique which provides the following advanced capabilities:
Selectable surveillance:Surveillance can be limited to the battle zone and other areas of interest. The scan rate in these selected areas is much higher.
Optimized detection and tracking: A special mode for maneuvering and high value targets employs a high scan rate and beam shapes optimized for each target to ensure tracking performance.
Fast track initiation and no false alarms: Verification beams sent at specific, individual, newly detected targets eliminate false alarms. Track initiation is achieved in 2 to 4 seconds.
Extended detection range: By transmitting extra long dwells in selected sectors, an extended detection range is achieved.
High Fault Tolerance and Redundancy: The system uses distributed, solid state transmitting and receiving elements. Each element is controlled in phase and amplitude. The system continues its operation even if some of the units are faulty.
ELW-2090 - Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C;)
ELTA's integrated mission suite, with a powerful command, control & communication system, supports a variety of operational missions such as:
Long-Range Air Surveillance
Airborne C4I for Air & Naval Operations
Airborne Command & Control Post
Network Centric Warfare Operations
Communication Node
The IL-76 Aircraft - This long-range, large cabin,4-engine turbojet military transport aircraft, supports a comlpete and high performance AEW&C; suite.
The IL-76 provides exceptional cabin space for the operator's crew including a large rest area for additional operators.
The ELW-2090 IL-76 AEW&C; aircraft can be air-refueled for extending mission time.
Sensor Data Integration - The AEW&C; integrates the data of the onboard sensors (Radar, IFF, ESM/ELINT, CSM/COMINT,SPS/RWR) with the theater situation picture via high capacity multiple Data Links.
IAI/ELTA Systems has vast experience in integrating tailor-made AEW&C; and Multi-Mission systems on various platforms, adapted to customer requirements.
