1992 United States men's Olympic basketball team

The 1992 United States men's Olympic basketball team, nicknamed the "Dream Team", was the first American Olympic team to feature active NBA players. Described by American journalists as the greatest sports team ever assembled, and called by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame "the greatest collection of basketball talent on the planet", it defeated its opponents by an average of 44 points en route to the gold medal against Croatia at the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona, Spain.Chuck Daly served as coach, assisted by Lenny Wilkens, P. J. Carlesimo, and Mike Krzyzewski.

At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, the United States national basketball team, made up of college stars, finished in third place. The defeat increased calls for professionals to be allowed to play in the Olympics. Borislav Stanković of FIBA advocated for this for years until the organization agreed in April 1989 despite American and Russian votes against the proposal.USA Basketball asked the NBA to supply players for its 1992 roster; the league was initially unenthusiastic, not foreseeing the cultural phenomenon that the team would become.Sports Illustrated was the first to nickname the forthcoming American roster as the "Dream Team", on the cover of its February 18, 1991 issue. So many corporate sponsors (including McDonald's, Coca-Cola, and Kellogg) wished to use the team to advertise their products that some were rejected.

Dream Team (Australian rules football)

The Dream Team was an Australian Football League (AFL) representative team created to take part in the AFL Hall of Fame Tribute Match against a Victorian representative team.

Although not officially a State of Origin game, eligibility for the Dream Team was based upon State of Origin rules: players who played their junior football within Victoria were eligible for Victoria, and players who played their junior football outside Victoria (including international players) were eligible for the Dream Team. The "Dream Team" concept was similar to the Allies, a composite State of Origin team representing players from anywhere except for South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia.

The Dream Team wore a predominantly white guernsey, with beige cuffs and collars, and blue numbers and side panels. The names of 1246 community and grass-roots football clubs competing within the Australian states and territories eligible for the Dream Team were also included in beige across the front.

1990 FIFA World Cup

The 1990 FIFA World Cup was the 14th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international football world championship tournament. It was held from 8 June to 8 July 1990 in Italy, the second country to host the event twice (the first being Mexico in 1986). Teams representing 116 national football associations entered, and qualification began in April 1988. A total of 22 teams qualified from this process, along with host nation Italy and defending champion Argentina.

The tournament was won by West Germany, their third World Cup title. They beat Argentina 1–0 in the final, a rematch of the previous final four years earlier. Italy finished third, and England fourth, after both lost their semi-finals in penalty shootouts. This was the last tournament to feature a team from the divided Germany, with the country being reunified later in 1990. Costa Rica, Ireland and the UAE made their first appearances in the finals, and Egypt its first since 1934. The official match ball was the Adidas Etrusco Unico.

2010 FIFA World Cup

The 2010 FIFA World Cup was the 19th FIFA World Cup, the world championship for men's national association football teams. It took place in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010. The bidding process for hosting the tournament finals was open only to African nations; in 2004, the international football federation, FIFA, selected South Africa over Egypt and Morocco to become the first African nation to host the finals.

The matches were played in 10 stadiums in nine host cities around the country, with the final played at the Soccer City stadium in South Africa's largest city, Johannesburg. Thirty-two teams were selected for participation via a worldwide qualification tournament that began in August 2007. In the first round of the tournament finals, the teams competed in round-robin groups of four teams for points, with the top two teams in each group proceeding. These 16 teams advanced to the knockout stage, where three rounds of play decided which teams would participate in the final.

1970 FIFA World Cup

The 1970 FIFA World Cup was the ninth FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international football championship for men's national teams. Held from 31 May to 21 June in Mexico, it was the first World Cup tournament staged in North America, and the first held outside Europe and South America. Teams representing 75 nations from all six populated continents entered the competition, and its qualification rounds began in May 1968. Fourteen teams qualified from this process to join host nation Mexico and defending champions England in the sixteen-team final tournament. El Salvador, Israel, and Morocco made their first appearances at the final stage, and Peru their first since 1930.

The tournament was won by Brazil, which defeated another two-time former champion, Italy, 4–1 in the final in Mexico City. The win gave Brazil its third World Cup title, which allowed them to permanently keep the Jules Rimet Trophy, and a new trophy was introduced in 1974. The victorious team, led by Carlos Alberto and featuring players such as Pelé, Gérson, Jairzinho, Rivellino, and Tostão, is often cited as the greatest-ever World Cup team. They achieved a perfect record of wins in all six games in the finals, as well as winning all their qualifying fixtures.

A-Next

A-Next is the Marvel Comics' MC2 universe version of the Avengers. The team made its first appearance in What If? #105, the first comic featuring Spider-Girl, and the team's origin story was told in the A-Next #1, cover dated October 1998.

Publication history

The first issue of A-Next paid homage to The Avengers (vol. 1) #1, with an Asgardian menace prompting new superheroes to band together, all of them analogues to the original team. Future stories introduced new heroes and menaces, most of them based on pre-existing Marvel characters. Characters and story elements created by DeFalco in the comic were used in other comics in the MC2 Universe.

A five issue miniseries entitled Avengers Next ran from November 2006 to January 2007, written by Tom DeFalco and with artwork by Ron Lim, that followed on from the events of Last Hero Standing and Last Planet Standing. It reunited the remaining members of A-Next and added new members Sabreclaw, Kate Power (of Power Pack), Thena, the daughter of Thor and a former criminal teleporter called Warp to the team.
