I’m Mike Gil, and I’m a marine biologist — a scientist, by profession.
BUT, I hated ‘science’ as a kid.
The information I memorized in my science classes seemed to be useless to my life. What I thought was ‘science’ bored me — being a marine biologist never even entered my radar as a career option.
But then, I took an unexpected chance, and I found myself on the other side of the world, living on a remote tropical island that was dominated by lizards, working with marine biologists, and studying coral reefs. Since then, my career in science has taken me on many adventures, from sailing expeditions across the Pacific Ocean to doing field research and teaching science in French Polynesia and the Caribbean.
I went from hating science as a kid, to earning my PhD in marine biology, by discovering the best kept secret I’ve ever known: science is true adventure. So many people are like I used to be — indifferent or even negative about science. If they knew what I know, they’d feel differently, and this knowledge can be powerful — powerful enough to change someone’s life, maybe powerful enough to save the world.

I’m off to the sunny but remote island of South Caicos, in the Turks and Caicos Islands, just southeast of the Bahamas.
Here, the School for Field Studies operates a field research facility where college students from all over the United States come for some hands-on marine biology field work.
Faculty at the School for Field Studies have ongoing research projects investigating fisheries management, reef health, shark populations and even human impact.
My day begins with the shark research team led by Professor Aaron Henderson. Henderson and his students are investigating how the marine protected areas around South Caicos are affecting the shark population.
Their first task for the day is to deploy some baited camera rigs. These rigs will hopefully attract and film several species of sharks. The goal: to learn how many and what species of sharks are here in the marine protected area.
Many different species visit the cameras including Nurse sharks, Caribbean Reef sharks, Tiger sharks, Lemon sharks and even Great Hammerheads!
Next the team deploys what are known as “drum lines.” These are baited hooks attached to a float and a weight. The goal is to catch sharks so they can be tagged and released.
With five drum lines set, the team goes back to the first one and checks for a shark.
Dr. Henderson places a tag on its dorsal fin, while the students take a small tissue sample from is tail for an isotope analysis of the shark’s diet.
Another group is studying the fish population of the island, trying to determine the effectiveness of marine protected areas.
Underwater, the team heads to a nice section of coral reef and begins a transect. Essentially they reel out a very long tape measure over the reef, which defines a specific path of a specific length.
By comparing the transect results inside and outside of the marine protected areas, the students can learn not only how well the marine protected areas are working but on which species.
Of course, fishing pressure is what affects fish populations, so it makes sense to also try to get a handle on what species of fish are being caught. The students work with the local fishermen who volunteer to allow the students to come down to the docks at the end of the day and see what kind of fish they are catching and how big they are. The fishermen know that research like this and marine protected areas will help to insure that there are always enough fish to catch.
Another team of students, another research project. This team is working in snorkel depths without scuba--studying a big snail called a conch.
The conch is one of the most popular seafoods in the Caribbean, and a whopping 10% of the world’s supply comes from the tiny island of South Caicos, so it’s an important resource.
This transect in the seagrass bed is being used to count conch. They also collect a few conch for additional research on land.
Back at the shore, alongside a representative from the Turks & Caicos Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs, the students crack the conch open in the traditional way.
Fishermen often take the meat out of the shell at sea and return with only the meat and no shell. How can the government recommend or enforce size regulations if there is no shell to measure? So Daniel’s research is looking at other ways to gauge the maturity of a conch, without a shell.
Baby sharks live in the mangroves, where they are safe from a lot of larger predators.
A couple of nights a week, Dr. Henderson and his students head over to the mangrove areas to catch baby sharks.
They start by setting a net in the chest-deep water, hoping to snare small sharks as they cruise by. Every 15 minutes they check the net, and when they have a shark, they bring it back to a makeshift lab on shore where they will weigh it, tag it with a electronic tag, take a small tissue sample, some ID photos, and then quickly get it back into the water.
One of the students will swim the baby shark around for a few minutes to re-oxygenate its gills, and then they send it on its way.
From sharks, to fish to conch and more sharks, my day with the marine biology students at the School for Field Studies in South Caicos was exhausting but exciting.

Marine biology is the scientific study of organisms in the ocean or other marine or brackish bodies of water. Given that in biology many phyla, families and genera have some species that live in the sea and others that live on land, marine biology classifies species based on the environment rather than on taxonomy. Marine biology differs from marine ecology as marine ecology is focused on how organisms interact with each other and the environment, and biology is the study of the organisms themselves.
Marine life is a vast resource, providing food, medicine, and raw materials, in addition to helping to support recreation and tourism all over the world. At a fundamental level, marine life helps determine the very nature of our planet. Marine organisms contribute significantly to the oxygen cycle, and are involved in the regulation of the Earth's climate.Shorelines are in part shaped and protected by marine life, and some marine organisms even help create new land.
Marine biology covers a great deal, from the microscopic, including most zooplankton and phytoplankton to the huge cetaceans (whales) which reach up to a reported 30 meters (98 feet) in length.

Plot: Sought by explorers for centuries as a possible trade route, Canada's Northwest Passage was first navigated by Norwegian Roald Amundsen in 1903-1906, a true polar explorer. Amundsen was the first man to reach the South Pole as well. Until 2009, the Arctic pack ice prevented regular marine passage throughout most of the year, but climate change has reduced the pack ice, and this Arctic shrinkage has made the waterways more navigable. Mark Terry's latest polar adventure explores the Passage on a three-week scientific expedition taking place on the aptly named icebreaker, the Amundsen. Studying the effects of climate change in this Arctic region, in general, and discovering new life on the ocean seabed and other previously inaccessible areas of the Arctic seas, in particular, is the focus of this one-hour HD documentary. This historic journey, featuring the work of many of the world's foremost polar scientists, is the highlight of a film that also compares and contrasts these findings with the latest studies being conducted at the other end of the earth - Antarctica. New scientific discoveries being made related to climate change this year in Antarctica are included to provide a unique comparison of current climate change research at both ends of the earth. In addition to showing how warmer temperatures are affecting the speed of melting glaciers, icebergs, pack ice and floes, an examination of the drastically changing eco-systems in both areas is presented. The film and its findings were invited by the United Nations Environment Programme to present to delegates attending COP16, the Climate Change Conference in Cancun in December, 2010. Will this film influence policy-makers and result in a new resolution being adopted? This question is answered in the film's dramatic conclusion.

Plot: Seth Warner has reached the end of his rope. Ever since his wife died two years earlier, his world has been in turmoil. In the midst of a wild thunderstorm he demands to know why he has been betrayed by the god he has believed in and honored his whole life. God's answer is to strike down Seth's dog in a bolt of lightning. Pushed beyond his limits, Seth decides to respond to his years of torment by breaking each of the biblical Ten Commandments. While staying with his sister-in-law, Rachel, much to the chagrin of her shifty reporter husband, Harry, he systematically sets out to break each commandment one by one. A natural at breaking commandments, Harry is drawn to Seth's mission in the hopes of using it to further his career, but ultimately they clash as Seth turns the table and uses Harry to fulfill some of his missions. Things get further complicated when Rachel and Seth are romantically drawn to each other as he struggles with his crisis of faith and she struggles with a failing marriage. Inevitably, Seth comes down to the last and most important commandment, Thou shall not kill. In a climactic battle of will and redemption, Seth, Harry and Rachel cross paths with a raging hurricane at the far end of Long Island. Echoing Seth's first confrontation with God, the sky and the sea open up in this fateful encounter at the Montauk Lighthouse. Individually, each confronts forces beyond human control and more importantly, must come to an understanding of their own life choices and decisions. The resolution to the story for all characters is surprising, mystical and ultimately just.

I’m Mike Gil, and I’m a marine biologist — a scientist, by profession.
BUT, I hated ‘science’ as a kid.
The information I memorized in my science classes seemed to be useless to my life. What I thought was ‘science’ bored me — being a marine biologist never even entered my radar as a career option.
But then, I took an unexpected chance, and I found myself on the other side of the world, living on a remote tropical island that was dominated by lizards, working with marine biologists, and studying coral reefs. Since then, my career in science has taken me on many adventures, from sailing expeditions across the Pacific Ocean to doing field research and teaching science in French Polynesia and the Caribbean.
I went from hating science as a kid, to earning my PhD in marine biology, by discovering the best kept secret I’ve ever known: science is true adventure. So many people are like I used to be — indifferent or even negative about science. If they knew what I know, they’d feel differently, and this knowledge can be powerful — powerful enough to change someone’s life, maybe powerful enough to save the world.

I’m off to the sunny but remote island of South Caicos, in the Turks and Caicos Islands, just southeast of the Bahamas.
Here, the School for Field Studies operates a field research facility where college students from all over the United States come for some hands-on marine biology field work.
Faculty at the School for Field Studies have ongoing research projects investigating fisheries management, reef health, shark populations and even human impact.
My day begins with the shark research team led by Professor Aaron Henderson. Henderson and his students are investigating how the marine protected areas around South Caicos are affecting the shark population.
Their first task for the day is to deploy some baited camera rigs. These rigs will hopefully attract and film several species of sharks. The goal: to learn how many and what species of sharks are here in the marine protected area.
Many different species visit the cameras including Nurse sharks, Caribbean Reef sharks, Tiger sharks, Lemon sharks and even Great Hammerheads!
Next the team deploys what are known as “drum lines.” These are baited hooks attached to a float and a weight. The goal is to catch sharks so they can be tagged and released.
With five drum lines set, the team goes back to the first one and checks for a shark.
Dr. Henderson places a tag on its dorsal fin, while the students take a small tissue sample from is tail for an isotope analysis of the shark’s diet.
Another group is studying the fish population of the island, trying to determine the effectiveness of marine protected areas.
Underwater, the team heads to a nice section of coral reef and begins a transect. Essentially they reel out a very long tape measure over the reef, which defines a specific path of a specific length.
By comparing the transect results inside and outside of the marine protected areas, the students can learn not only how well the marine protected areas are working but on which species.
Of course, fishing pressure is what affects fish populations, so it makes sense to also try to get a handle on what species of fish are being caught. The students work with the local fishermen who volunteer to allow the students to come down to the docks at the end of the day and see what kind of fish they are catching and how big they are. The fishermen know that research like this and marine protected areas will help to insure that there are always enough fish to catch.
Another team of students, another research project. This team is working in snorkel depths without scuba--studying a big snail called a conch.
The conch is one of the most popular seafoods in the Caribbean, and a whopping 10% of the world’s supply comes from the tiny island of South Caicos, so it’s an important resource.
This transect in the seagrass bed is being used to count conch. They also collect a few conch for additional research on land.
Back at the shore, alongside a representative from the Turks & Caicos Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs, the students crack the conch open in the traditional way.
Fishermen often take the meat out of the shell at sea and return with only the meat and no shell. How can the government recommend or enforce size regulations if there is no shell to measure? So Daniel’s research is looking at other ways to gauge the maturity of a conch, without a shell.
Baby sharks live in the mangroves, where they are safe from a lot of larger predators.
A couple of nights a week, Dr. Henderson and his students head over to the mangrove areas to catch baby sharks.
They start by setting a net in the chest-deep water, hoping to snare small sharks as they cruise by. Every 15 minutes they check the net, and when they have a shark, they bring it back to a makeshift lab on shore where they will weigh it, tag it with a electronic tag, take a small tissue sample, some ID photos, and then quickly get it back into the water.
One of the students will swim the baby shark around for a few minutes to re-oxygenate its gills, and then they send it on its way.
From sharks, to fish to conch and more sharks, my day with the marine biology students at the School for Field Studies in South Caicos was exhausting but exciting.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is a third-person shooter, similar to Garden Warfare. Gameplay will largely remain the same as its predecessor, with the addition of 6 new plant and zombie classes, a zombie version of Garden Ops, titled Graveyard Ops, and a new mode called Herbal Assault mode, which supports up to 24 players. Different classes have different abilities. Most characters and modes (Team Vanquish, Garden Ops, etc.) from the original Garden Warfare will be returning. New abilities for returning characters will also be introduced in Garden Warfare 2.
Unlike the first game, the game will not require an Internet connection to play and every mode in the game can be played solo. Split-screen multiplayer, private servers, twelve maps and forty different characters will be supported at launch. Free additional content will also be released regularly upon the game's release.
A new mode called Backyard Battleground is also introduced. It serves as a hub world that is free for players to explore. In Backyard Battleground, players can access portals that are connected to missions, view unlocked characters' bobbleheads, collect collectibles scattered in the world, and join King of the Hill-style matches against artificial intelligence at will. A shooting gallery and moon-based missions are also featured.
Plant and zombie variants the player earned in the original game will automatically transfer to this game. The UI has been improved, with Crazy Dave and Dr. Zomboss shown talking in 3D model of themselves (rather than appearing as 2D designs from the original Plants vs. Zombies).

Looking to dedicate yourself to adventure and uncovering mysteries of the ocean? Marine biology might be for you – here’s the first step, no matter your age.
The most common question I get from aspiring marine biologists is: “Where do I start?”, followed closely by: “What school/college/university should I attend?”, “What major should I have?”, and “What classes should I take?”. I address these questions and more by describing what I think all marine biologists (and scientists, in general) should do when they are first starting out. Again, I can’t stress enough that if you want to do marine biology (or anything else for that matter) for a living, I don’t think you should let your age hold you back – the scientists I know that started latest in life are some of the most efficient and successful in the bunch!
In addition to what I state in the video, I would encourage anyone interested in science to reach out to local scientists at colleges or universities near you – many would be willing to field your specific questions about research and help point you in the right direction. Even if you live in the middle of nowhere, use email to get in touch with scientists. Just remember, do your homework before you contact someone – be sure you understand the background or your question(s) and/or have already searched for answers (Google is a great place to start). Also, I will be setting up a Q&A; section to http://SciAll.org, specifically for you to ask questions about science careers – stay tuned!
As I mentioned in the video, here are links to two free listservs (daily emails that you can sign up for – I recommend the aggregated ‘digest’ versions), which are fantastic resources to find ongoing volunteer (and sometimes paid!) internship opportunities for individuals at various levels of education/experience (including K-12, undergrad, grad, continuing education, etc.) to gain research skills and experience:

This discussion deals with what does a marine biologist do, based on my decision to be a fisheries biologist ( a type of marine scientist) . I desired to become a marine biologist and discovered that I could work with Pacific salmon, that live a portion of their life history in the marine environment and a portion in fresh water.
What Does a Marine Biologist Do is such a broad question because in my career as a fisheries scientist, I was able to do everything from study design, conduct, data analysis, and documentation, to program implementation and management and many enhancements. We studied the effects of underwater structures in order to complete the vital work we were undertaking.
In order to do the work of a biologist we need to have skills in basic fields of mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology, as well as other applied fields. As my career progressed I found that understanding engineering principles and the effect of trace elements, oils, and heavy metals in the environment played an important part of assessing the biological impacts of proposed actions.
As a biologist I found that I could materially change the quality of life in our region. For what does a marine biologist do, I found that there were many diverse interests that needed to be addressed while pursuing what I believed were the best goals.
However, as a staff manager, I also found many qualified biologists that were unemployed, especially those without advanced degrees in the field. The field of opportunity is narrow and limited to those who are qualified and determined. A candidate could spend a decade or more acquiring the necessary education, skills, and experience to be considered for a basic scientist position. That could entail tens of thousands of dollars. They may not be able to afford the cost.
An alternative is to secure a big income and volunteer or even privately fund their biological interests. We propose that a business can be developed to permit this financial and personal time freedom.
