Muzi Quawson has a preference for individuals from the American subculture. Doll Parts is a loosely shot, spherical portrait of two young women. Doll Parts is part of IFFR presents, a weekly series of short films.
Look back at International Film Festival Rotterdam 2015, a lively mix of talkshows, music, food, parties and even film. See you in 2016!
Like in fairy tale. A dreamy girl or young woman in a cottage. Cockroaches seem to be the only thing hampering her. She fights back with a coat hanger. Quite stylish, a coat hanger. Carefully made. Beautifully lit. Deftly played. Perfect poetic cinema. Charlotte Lim Lay Kuen (1981, Malaysia) worked on several TV commercials after completing her studies in broadcasting. She has assisted in direction and production for Malaysian new wave pioneers such as James Lee and Ho Yuhang and directed some short films. My Daughter (2009), Lim's feature film debut, was screened in Rotterdam and nominated for a Tiger Award.
Jonas and his girlfriend live in a house in the Serra do Mar mountains that separate São Paolo from the coast. He watches the power stations on monitors. A fire breaks out. Beautiful, mysterious fiction that raises questions and was triumphant at major Brazilian festivals. Iris Junges (1985, Brazil) is a filmmaker and screenwriter. She studied at the film department of the University of São Paulo and the International Film and TV School in Cuba. Her first short film Hound was screened worldwide at film festivals and won the Breakthrough Award at the São Paulo International Film Festival in 2011. Serra do Mar is part of IFFR presents, a weekly series of short films on YouTube.
Maid Boonrerm is at her mistress's beck and call 24/7. The former sometimes demands the strangest things. The first being to lie in a pen like a dog. Boonrerm is a subtly formulated indictment of the treatment of maids in Thailand. Sorayos PRAPAPAN (1986, Thailand) is an independent filmmaker based in Bangkok. He completed studies at the Film and Photography Thammasat University Thailand. After his schooling, he started working as a production assistant for the Palme D’or-awarded film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010). Besides his work as a short film director, Prapapan is a sound technician and foley artist.
The 45th edition of IFFR takes place from 27 January - 7 February 2016. Please Welcome the trailer of IFFR 2016!
This complex, sometimes dark short film by Johan Oettinger and Peter Tukei Muhumuza skilfully combines animation and feature film techniques. The two directors were brought together as part of the Copenhagen documentary festival's Dox:Lab project. Walk with Me was shot in Uganda and completed in Denmark. A young girl in Uganda dreams of being a ballerina, which is remarkable and almost infeasible in rural Africa. Johan Oettinger (1984, Denmark) is a filmmaker with a specialisation in stop-motion puppet animation. His professional debute Seven Minutes in the Warsaw Ghetto (2012) was screened and received awards at more than 120 film festivals. Oettinger works for the Danish Film Institute and the Art Council and makes music videos for Copenhagen Records and films for Lego. In partnership w...
Intriguing report of a homeless Mexican kid addicted to sniffing glue who whispers about his vicious experiences. "Uprising surprising"
"Knowledge wisdom understanding"
[Afu-Ra]
Smooth like Johnny Cochran, I keep it movin through Brooklyn
Base against the hymn, brings the sweat to the skin
Reminisce of the days as a shorty
Had no stress, no bills, was comin for me
I lived it up, yeah, money ain't a thing
Never thought twice on what my future bring
Role models, naw I thought nothing of it
Eyes fixed on skies and planes fly high above it
Summer's comin, September's middle school
Mom Dukes mad strict, she'll never raise a fool
I'm comin up, clean the dirty from the ghetto
So we can plant some seeds and watch them grow
[Chorus]
Right, knowledge wisdom understanding rules, right
Everybody got to pay the dues, right
Knowledge, wisdom understanding rules
Everybody got to pay the dues
[Afu-Ra]
Tripped up by bad luck, 16 years and buck
I realized the world might end, not givin up
Stickin up, runnin up, comin up
Turn it up, I see signs of blowin up
Study life in every facet of my trainin
We need masters in biology, zoology
To overtake, Illuminati trick-nology
Transform, reciprocate your mental state
Now make a date to overtake your objective
Show that through light, that everything is connected
But not in categories, that's the Devil's story
Symbols of cannibalism, ruin your vision
The thoughts formulate in your mind with no precision
So reenact, a rebirth, now you're the Phoenix
When shorties see it, now that's the time they believe it
Achieve it, your goals in life, don't be a casualty
Infinite and intricate, monument
"Knowledge wisdom understanding"
[Chorus]
[Afu-Ra]
Right, knowledge wisdom understanding, rules
"Uprising, surprising"
[Afu-Ra]
I know the next millennium seems like it's cursed
That's why I have to rehearse
Tune my physical, mental spits the lyrical
It's so essential, transcends thoughts I'm into
As we continue, touch rhyme styles I'm into
All grown up, Junior High to 25
A made man, tight connection with my brothers
Bridgin gaps, dodgin traps with my raps
Signs you're followin, shed more light
Then a halogen, take a step back, now who you followin?
[Chorus 2X]
