Zathura: A Space Adventure (or just Zathura) is a 2005 fantasy science fiction film directed by Jon Favreau, and is loosely based on the illustrated book Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg, author of Jumanji. It stars Jonah Bobo as Danny and Josh Hutcherson as Walter. Tim Robbins also had a small role as the boys' divorced father. The film was shot in Los Angeles and Culver City, California & was released on November 11, 2005 by Columbia Pictures. Unlike the book, the film contains no Jumanji material and does not mention any Jumanji events. The film was a critical success despite being a box office bomb.
Brothers Walter (Josh Hutcherson) and Danny (Jonah Bobo) can never seem to get along with each other, or with their older sister, Lisa (Kristen Stewart). One day, when their father sets off for work, they quarrel yet again while Lisa is in her bedroom upstairs. Danny is banished into the house's basement by older brother Walter for hitting him in the face with a baseball. There he discovers a clockwork-driven space-themed board game called "Zathura". It is a race game, and the objective is to reach a space location called Zathura. At each turn, one of its two markers moves along or back on its track, and the game issues a card (all of which are read primarily by Walter, as Danny cannot read properly) of which the effects happen immediately (similar to the clues of Jumanji). The boys start playing the game. On looking out, one of them sees that it has become night, and that the house is no longer on Earth but on a small rock floating in space. According to the instructions, the house will not return to Earth until the game is finished. During the story, the brothers must overcome their ill will toward one another to survive.
Zathura is an illustrated children's book by the American author Chris Van Allsburg as well as a film that was based on the book. Two boys are drawn into an intergalactic adventure when their house is magically hurled through space. The plot is similar to Jumanji, another illustrated book by Van Allsburg, and references are made, both visual and textual, to Jumanji.
Zathura starts with two brothers Walter and Danny Budwing's parents leaving, but Danny and Walter don't get along with each other. Danny wants to play catch, while Walter wants to watch T.V. Danny tosses Walter a baseball which hits him on the head. Walter then chases Danny through the house and catches Danny in the park across the street from their house, where they find a board game called Jumanji: A Jungle Adventure. Danny brings the game home where Danny then loses interest in playing it. Danny then finds another board game called Zathura: A Space Adventure". Danny starts playing Zathura, then he gets a card that says
Then a Meteor Shower happens, soon Danny and Walter realize that the game sent them into outer space. Walter and Danny start finishing Zathura since the game won't take them home unless they finish the game. Soon Walter loses his gravity and Danny saves Walter from disappearing into space. Walter takes his turn where a defective robot chases him through the house. Danny takes his turn where he gets close to a planet called Tsouris-3 and gets shorter and wider. Soon,a Zorgon ship appears and Zorgons board their house. The robot then chases the zorgons away as Walter takes his turn and gets sucked into a black hole to go back in time. Walter goes back to the time where he catches Danny in the park. Danny finds Jumanji and looks at it, and is about to take it home, but Walter grabbed the game and shoves it into the trash, impling that he had played the game before. Finally the story ends with Walter offering to play catch with Danny and the two brothers play catch together.
A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a series of still or moving images. It is produced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. The process of filmmaking has developed into an art form and industry.
Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating – or indoctrinating – citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue into the language of the viewer.
Films are made up of a series of individual images called frames. When these images are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring. The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision, whereby the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Viewers perceive motion due to a psychological effect called beta movement.
