The Governor of Texas is the chief executive of the U.S. State of Texas, the presiding officer over the executive branch of the Texas state government, and the commander-in-chief of the Texas National Guard, the state's militia. The governor has the power to consider bills passed by the Texas Legislature, by signing them into law, or vetoing them, and in bills relating to appropriations, the power of a line-item veto. He may convene the legislature, and grant pardons and reprieves, except in cases of impeachment, and upon the permission of the legislature, in cases of treason. The state provides an official residence, the Governor's Mansion in Austin. The incumbent, Greg Abbott, is the forty-eighth governor, of whom two have been women, to serve in the office since Texas' statehood in 1845.
When compared to those of other states, the Governorship of Texas has been described as one of relative weakness. In some respects, it is the Lieutenant Governor of Texas, who presides over the Texas Senate, who possesses greater influence to exercise their prerogatives.
Texas /ˈtɛksəs/ (Spanish: Texas or Tejas [ˈtexas]) is a state in the United States of America. It is the second most populous and second largest state by area in the US. Geographically located in the south central part of the country, Texas shares an international border with Mexico to the south and borders the states of New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km2) and a growing population of over 27.5 million residents (July 2015).
Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while San Antonio is the second largest in the state and seventh largest in the United States. Dallas–Fort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and fifth largest United States metropolitan statistical areas, respectively. Other major cities include Austin (the state capital) and El Paso. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as a former independent republic, and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texan state flag and on the Texan state seal. The origin of the state name, Texas, is from the word, "Tejas", which means 'friends' in the Caddo language.
Megyn Marie Kelly (born November 18, 1970), formerly known as Megyn Kendall, is a journalist, former attorney, news pundit, and political commentator on the Fox News Channel. Prior to that, Kelly co-hosted America's Newsroom along with Bill Hemmer. From 2007 to 2012, the two also hosted Fox News Channel's New Year's Eve specials, All American New Year. She was included in the 2014 Time list of the 100 most influential people.
Kelly was born in Syracuse, New York, to Edward Kelly, who taught education at the State University of New York at Albany, and Linda, a homemaker. She is of Italian descent on her mother's side and Irish descent on her father's. Kelly's father died when she was 15 years old.
Kelly attended Tecumseh Elementary School, in DeWitt, New York. At age 9, her family moved to the Albany, New York suburb of Delmar, where she attended Bethlehem Central High School. After high school, she obtained an undergraduate degree in political science at Syracuse University and earned a J.D. from Albany Law School in 1995. Kelly is Roman Catholic.
James Richard "Rick" Perry (born March 4, 1950) is an American politician who served as the 47th Governor of Texas from December 2000 to January 2015. A Republican, he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Texas in 1998 and assumed the governorship in December 2000 when then-governor George W. Bush resigned to become President of the United States. Perry was the longest-serving governor in Texas state history.
Perry was elected to full gubernatorial terms in 2002, 2006 and 2010 and is the fourth Texas governor (after Allan Shivers, Price Daniel and John Connally) to serve three terms. With a tenure in office of 14 years, 30 days, Perry was, at the time he left office, the second longest-serving current U.S. governor (after Terry Branstad of Iowa). Perry served as chairman of the Republican Governors Association in 2008 and again in 2011. In July 2013, Perry announced that he was retiring as governor and would not seek re-election in 2014.
On August 15, 2014, Perry was indicted on two felony charges related to his actions as governor. The charge against Perry of "coercion of a public servant" was dismissed in July 2015 when an appellate court ruled the statute unconstitutional. As of November 2015, Perry still faces one charge of "abuse of official capacity" in relation to his veto of funding for a state district attorney's office.

Cameron Todd Willingham (January 9, 1968 – February 17, 2004) was an American man who was convicted of murdering his three young children by arson at the family home in Corsicana, Texas, on December 23, 1991. He was executed in 2004. Willingham's case and the investigative techniques were criticized by a 2004 Chicago Tribune article. The case was discussed again in a 2009 investigative report in The New Yorker. This coverage suggested that the arson evidence was unconvincing. The 2011 documentary, Incendiary: The Willingham Case, also explored the case. According to an August 2009 investigative report by an expert hired by the Texas Forensic Science Commission, the original claims of arson were doubtful. The Corsicana Fire Department disputes the findings, stating that the report overlook...

It's part of Abbott's Texas Plan to "restore the Rule of Law and return the Constitution to its intended purpose." The amendments are: -Prohibit Congress from regulating activity that occurs wholly within one State. -Require Congress to balance its budget. -Prohibit administrative agencies—and the unelected bureaucrats that staff them—from creating federal law. -Prohibit administrative agencies—and the unelected bureaucrats that staff them—from preempting state law. -Allow a two-thirds majority of t...

Abbott is expected to lay out his top priorities for this legislative session which could include statewide tax cuts, and more funding for roads, water projects, and education. Securing the border is also one of Abbott's key points. But how Abbott goes about it could shrink or widen potential rifts between Texas' top three Republicans: himself, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Speaker of the House Joe Straus.
