Overland travel or overlanding refers to an "overland journey" - perhaps originating with Marco Polo's first overland expedition in the 13th century from Venice to the Chinese court of Kublai Khan. Today overlanding is a form of extended adventure holiday, embarking on a long journey, often in a group. Overland companies provide a converted truck or a bus plus a tour leader, and the group travels together overland for a period of weeks or months.
Since the 1960s overlanding has been a popular means of travel between destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia (particularly India), the Americas and Australia. The "Hippie trail" of the 1960s and 1970s saw thousands of young westerners travelling through the Middle East to India and Nepal.
At 9,288 km (5,771 miles), the Trans-Siberian Railway is one of the longest overland journeys in existence today, taking seven days to reach Vladivostok from Moscow, and providing an alternative to air travel for journeys between Europe and Asia.
The Indian Pacific railway, completed in 1970, links Sydney and Perth in Australia. Covering 4,343 km (2,699 miles) over four days, the railway includes the longest stretch of straight railway line in the world.

This is a thorough description of how to secure your overland vehicle, more specifically for a Volkswagen Vanagon but can be of help with any overland vehicle. We describe how you can secure all your windows with security bars, secure all exterior belongings, interior/exterior locks and vehicle theft prevention on any overland vehicle. It doesn't matter what kind of overland vehicle you have for installing security bars on your windows. The only thing that will change is the design of them and how they are installed to the body of the vehicle. We've seen some on the outside and some on the inside but we prefer to blend in as much as possible so we went with them inside behind tinted glass. These bars are the most important part of your vehicles security; your car being secure while you're away and also while you're sleeping inside of it. We seldom sleep in secure areas or campsites cause we don't see the point in paying to park our vehicle somewhere for the night when we can always find a place for free. We just prepare ourselves for the worse case scenario which would be somebody trying to break into it. The measures we have taken will not only protect you against theft of your belongings outside your overland vehicle but also secure yourself and your belongings inside your vehicle while you sleep so you will definitely sleep a little better no matter where you park. If somebody decides they still want to try to gain entry you will surely have enough time to hop in the drivers seat if need be and take off. When we sleep in our Vanagon once the door closes we feel safe and comfortable with our defensive and if need be offensive ways to keep us safe from the bad people out there. We don't run across them often but just be ready for it if that time comes. There is nothing worse than going on a beautiful hike or exploring a town with the worry about your overland vehicle being broke into. By following this instructional video you can put your mind at ease to enjoy your travels much more and always come back to your Vanagon or whatever your overland vehicle of choice is still there and in one piece. His quest is to find the source of the Okavango, deep in the highlands. He then carries with his a bottle of water from its source, all the way, deep into the Okavango Delta. In the final episode, in the final trickle in a riverbed, he then watches as his water disappears into the desert, deep in the Kalahari. An epic tale of overland adventure.

From February 10th - 18th 2016, I participated in Bali Jawa Overland tour for 9 days 8 nights, hosted by my university as my final exam of 3rd semester.
As you might or might not know already, Im majoring tourism in Trisakti School of Tourism, Jakarta. So yeah, Im preparing my self to travel for a living ;)
I did Jawa Bali Overland back in 2012 when I was in St. Laurensia Tourism Vocational High School and now I also did the reverse trip which is Bali Jawa Overland.
Overall I think Bali Jawa Overland is more exciting and it was not as tiring as Jawa Bali Overland. Plus we had a free half day in Malang city to go city sightseeing.
Here is the itinerary of the trip :
Day 1 : Jakarta - Bali (Taman Ayun, Alas Kedaton, Tanah Lot)
Day 2 : Bali (Goa Gajah, Tirta Empul, Kintamani, Penglipuran Village, Kertagosa, Kecak dance in Batubulan)
Day 3 : Bali (Barong dance in Batubulan, Uluwatu, Bali Hai Cruise)

Toyota Tacoma Overland Expedition Build.
The vehicle we use in our overland adventures is a 2014 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road Edition outfitted by myself specifically for Expedition Overlanding. We have armored it with an ARB Bull Bar and Warn 9.5 XP winch, BudBuilt Skid plates, Bay Area Metal Fabrication rock sliders and CBI Offroad Fabrications Trail Ryder 2.0 rear bumper with tire carrier swing out gate, telescoping Rigid Industries Dually diffusion light, camp table and 5gal gas can holder. We also have Rigid Industries 10" E2 combo light on the bull bar. We have deep cycle marine grade house battery with solar panel to run our arb fridge to keep the refreshments cold and keep the electronics powered up. We carry 11 gallons of drinking water in the rear floor well tank and another 6 gallon tank in the SnugPro topper that is pumped to a Helton Heat exchanger under the hood for hot showers. We also have Outback Solutions drawers installed in the topper to keep the gear secured and contained. On top we use the Cascadia Vehicle Tent Mount Shasta edition that sits on the Kargo Master rack that came with the topper. Lately we installed a FrontRunner Outfitters Slimline II Roof rack over the cab to carry more lightweight materials and get the MaxTrax off the backwheel. We also installed the AirFlow America Snorkey for cooler cleaner air intake as well as deep water fording. We have a Fiamma Awning for shade, Bushwacker fender flares for more coverage and recently added some of Warrior Products Sideplate for protection against dirt and rocks on the side panels. To carry all this additional weight we first installed Old Man Emu heavy duty suspension system from ARB in Australia. We also use their complete recovery kit and dual portable air compressor for airing up the tires, which are BF Goodrich Mud Terrains.

Top Deck Travel an Australian, London based travel company ran overland tours from London to Sydney vice versa from 1975 to 1995. They still operate as one of the leading European Tour companies. This particular tour was recorded on film for promotional purposes. Two buses were involved, Lemming driven by Blue Ramsay and couriered by Adrian Campbell. Blue had completed this tour numerous times and it was Adrian's first. The second bus Snot was driven by Trevor Carroll and couriered by Alan Kenny. This was Trevor's 3rd overland and Al's second. 1978 was a hazardous period for Asian Overland travel, Iraq was refusing to issue visa's, the Iranian revolution was in full swing as was the repercussions of Afghanistan's Coup and it's aftermath. The Mambet Rock and Zilim River in Ural Mountains. "Real Russia" ep.82
Bashkortostan is one of the most beautiful regions of Russia with famous Ural Mountains, rocks, woods and rivers. Our special expedition featuring Suzuki Jimny, upgraded for an off-road rides by our friend Alexey Tikhonenko, traveled about 200km south-east off Ufa, Russia that to get into The Mambet Rock and Zilim River. It is located in 30km far from Tolparovo, closest little village where only about 50-60 of indigenous Bashkir people are living and where even mobile networks are not available. Those last 30km from Tolparovo to The Mambet Rock went through the gravel, dirt and river flows. Blue had completed this tour numerous times and it was Adrian's first. The second bus Snot was driven by Trevor Carroll and couriered by Alan Kenny. This was Trevor's 3rd overland and Al's second. 1978 was a hazardous period for Asian Overland travel, Iraq was refusing to issue visa's, the Iranian revolution was in full swing as was the repercussions of Afghanistan's Coup and it's aftermath. Bashkortostan is one of the most beautiful regions of Russia with famous Ural Mountains, rocks, woods and rivers.
Our special expedition featuring Suzuki Jimny, upgraded for an off-road rides by our friend Alexey Tikhonenko, traveled about 200km south-east off Ufa, Russia that to get into The Mambet Rock and Zilim River.
It is located in 30km far from Tolparovo, closest little village where only about 50-60 of indigenous Bashkir people are living and where even mobile networks are not available.
Those last 30km from Tolparovo to The Mambet Rock went through the gravel, dirt and river flows.
Meanwhile of our travel to The Mambet Rock, together with Alexey Tikhonenko, we also participated in one of the stages of the “Territory of the Secret” game. It’s a special game of the community of jeepers in Bashkortostan, Russia. It led us to another village called Tash-Aslyi. There we climbed to another mountain which is right around the village and watched another great landscape of Bashkortostan from that point.

Back when we came up with the idea to make a set of adventure travel videos of a trip through Morocco and the Sahara our minds would often wander while trip planning about sand dunes and the feeling of true wilderness. In part 5 we sure got lots of it and loved every single moment of this section. We were a long way from the nearest town or even road, we had to get our water from wells and carry enough fuel for 600km as well as food and other supplies.
You will find that part 5 is longer than previous videos we have made. We have done this longer video so you guys can get to follow us along and get to know us and what we are really like. You get to see the equipment we use on trips and how we use it, everything from our cooking equipment to our recovery equipment and of course out trusty Trasharoo. We took the chance to tag an abandoned Land Rover out in the desert with some of the stickers that the companies that have shown us support gave us. So grab a seat, get comfortable and enjoy part 5.
