Project to improve traffic flow to 110 Freeway in San Pedro completed

The Port of Los Angeles and Caltrans announced Friday that work is finished on a $46 million roadway improvement project to ease traffic congestion at key access points to the northbound 110 Freeway in San Pedro.

The improvements included widening the 47 Freeway connector to the 110 Freeway with an additional lane, and modifying the freeway ramps at John S. Gibson Boulevard. Officials said the work will eliminate congestion and weaving that occurred when slow moving, on-ramp traffic from San Pedro merged into fast-moving traffic coming off the Vincent Thomas Bridge from Long Beach.

The project included adding bike lanes and sidewalks on John S. Gibson Boulevard, sound wall construction, and widening the Channel Street and Pacific Avenue bridges.

A project to improve traffic flow should be completed in September. The project will reconfigure the C Street on- and off-ramps to provide improved access to Harry Bridges Boulevard, John S. Gibson Boulevard and Figueroa Street in Wilmington. The project should be completed by September 2016.

More than half the project was funded through grants. The Port of Los Angeles funded the rest.
