A red carpet is traditionally used to mark the route taken by heads of state on ceremonial and formal occasions, and has in recent decades been extended to use by VIPs and celebrities at formal events.
The earliest known reference to walking a red carpet in literature is in the play Agamemnon by Aeschylus, written in 458 BC. When the title character returns from Troy, he is greeted by his vengeful wife Clytemnestra who offers him a red path to walk upon:
Agamemnon, knowing that only gods walk on such luxury, responds with trepidation:
Oriental carpets in Renaissance painting often show rugs and carpets, patterned but with red often the main background colour, laid on the steps to a throne, or on a dais where rulers or sacred figures are placed.
A red carpet was rolled out to a river to welcome the arrival of United States president James Monroe in 1821. In 1902, The New York Central Railroad used plush crimson carpets to direct people as they boarded their 20th Century Limited passenger train. This is believed to be the origin of the phrase "red-carpet treatment". Film premieres are often laid down with red carpets.

Captain Fantastic was a regular feature of Do Not Adjust Your Set from 1967 to 1968 which appeared as a filmed insert between the videotaped sketches.
The title character was a bowler-hatted, plastic-mac wearing and umbrella carrying superhero played by David Jason. Denise Coffey also appeared as the villainous Mrs Black.
Each episode was shot on location in and around London. There was no lip sync dialogue, so episodes played like silent movies, narrated by Jason in character over a frenetic piece of library music. Each week Mrs Black would attempt to take over the world using the electronic gadgetry contained in her "horrible handbag", while Captain Fantastic tried to set things right using his high-tech umbrella.
Each episode ended on a cliffhanger, usually accompanied by a sarcastic comment from the announcer. (This might be seen as a forerunner to the narration style of Danger Mouse, which also starred Jason as a voice actor).
During one first series episode of DNAYS, Eric Idle followed the Captain Fantastic segment with the song "Captain Fantastic, We Love You", backed by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. The performance featured several of the regular cast members dancing while dressed as superheroes, including Jason who was dressed as Robin. Some years later Jason was to wear a Batman suit in an episode of Only Fools and Horses.

His wife Kay, however, wants the couple and their four rowdy sons to move to the country. She soon finds herself dealing with fixing up their dilapidated country home and competing for her husband's affections with flirtatious Broadway diva Deborah Vaughn.

Orkney evoked through poetry, the sounds of nature, and the music of Peter Maxwell Davies. Poetry, natural sounds and vivid landscapes intertwine in this evocative portrait of composer Peter Maxwell Davies and his adopted home, Orkney. Throughout the film, Davies' often sparse, experimental music accompanies the majestic island landscapes, giving a sense of both their ancient beauty and their danger. Davies worked across many styles of music, and the film includes extracts from Ave Maris Stella, O Magnum Mysterium and the final scene of his opera The Martyrdom of Saint Magnus. We also hear George Mackay Brown reading his own verse, as well as quotations from the works of Edwin Muir, Robert Rendell and the ancient Orkneyinga Saga. Subscribe: http://bit.ly/subscribetotheBFI. Private Peaceful screenwriter Simon Reade and actor George Mackay came into the FILMCLUB studio to talk about the trials and tribulations that come from adapting a much loved book for the screen. As a young actor, George was able to share some of his tips for breaking into the industry with our members, and talk about who has influenced him the most so far. Simon is an experienced writer for both the stage and screen, but was keen to state the importance of collaboration in film, giving credit to some of the great actors, producers and directors he has worked with over the years.
