Maaya (film)

Maaya is a 1972 Malayalam-language Indian feature film directed by Ramu Kariat for Jaya Maruthi starring Thikkurissi Sukumaran Nair in the lead role.Prem Nazir and Sharada also plays pivotal roles, supported by Vijayasree, Sujatha, Sankaradi and T. R. Omana playing other important roles. The film was based on an award winning 1963 novel with the same name by popular novelist K Surendran

Plot

Sankarappillai (Thikkurissi Sukumaran Nair) is the local business man who runs grocery shop in the village center. He also owns the little textile shop of the village which his son Raghuvaran Pillai (Adoor Bhasi) operates. Sankarappillai's family also includes his second wife Eeswari (T. R. Omana) and daughter Gomathy (Sharada). Sankarappillai is separated from his first wife Kalyani (Adoor Bhavani) but visits and supports his daughter Omana in the first marriage.

Gomathy is in love with Madhavankutty (Prem Nazir) an educated but unemployed young man. Sankarappillai and Eeswary also encourages their relation. Madhavankutty takes up job in a news paper in the town. Raghu wishes to expand the textile business, Madhavankutty introduces Raghu and Sankarappillai to his old class mate Vasukkutty (K. P. Ummer). Vasukkutty's uncle Pankippillai(GK Pillai) run a bigger textile shop in the town. Though two head-strong men clashes at first Pankippillai agrees to loan textiles worth Rs 30,000 to Sankarappillai. Vasukkutty meets Gomathy during a business visit to Sankarappillai's home and falls head over heals for the beautiful girl. Seeking business advantage Sankarappillai decides to arrange Gomathy's wedding with Vasukkutty leaving a heart broken Madhavankutty resort to writing.

Maya (Buddhist mental factor)

Māyā (Sanskrit; Tibetan wyl.: sgyu) is a Buddhist term translated as "pretense" or "deceit" that is identified as one of the twenty subsidiary unwholesome mental factors within the Mahayana Abhidharma teachings. Maya (illusion)

Maya (Sanskrit: māyā) literally "illusion", "magic", has multiple meanings in Indian philosophies depending on the context. In ancient Vedic literature, Māyā literally implies extraordinary power and wisdom. In later Vedic texts and modern literature dedicated to Indian traditions, Māyā connotes a "magic show, an illusion where things appear to be present but are not what they seem". Māyā is also a spiritual concept connoting "that which exists, but is constantly changing and thus is spiritually unreal", and the "power or the principle that conceals the true character of spiritual reality".

In Buddhism, Maya is the name of Gautama Buddha's mother. In Hinduism, Maya is also an epithet for goddess, and the name of a manifestation of Lakshmi, the goddess of "wealth, prosperity and love". Maya is also a name for girls.

Etymology

Māyā (Sanskrit: माया) is a word with unclear etymology, probably comes from the root "√ma", or "mā" which means "to measure". Alternatively, the root of the word may be from "man-" or "to think", implying the role of imagination in the creation of the world. In early Vedic usage, the term implies, states Mahony, "the wondrous and mysterious and wondrous power to turn an idea into a physical reality".

Heaven (Jay Z song)

"Heaven" is a song recorded by American rapper Jay-Z from his twelfth studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail (2013) featuring American recording artist Justin Timberlake. The song was written by Jay-Z, The-Dream, members of R.E.M., Adrian Younge, Timbaland, and Jerome "J-Roc" Harmon while the production was handled by the latter two. During the song, Jay-Z touches on subjects of religious allegory and an interrogation of organized religion. The song has since peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles.

Background

On "Heaven", Jay-Z questions the meaning of religion and once again shoots down rumors that he is part of the secret organization Illuminati. He explained the song in a promotional video for Samsung saying,

The song indulges in religious allegory, and is one of the few songs on Magna Carta Holy Grail that touch upon existential and spiritual themes. Throughout the song he ponders faith, superstition and free thinking.

The songs features Jay-Z rapping a lyric of rock band, R.E.M.'s 1991 single "Losing My Religion". Following the album's release, former frontman of R.E.M. Michael Stipe told NME that he's "thrilled" and it was a "great honor", that Jay-Z included the lyrics in one of his songs.

Heaven (Los Lonely Boys song)

"Heaven" is the title of a popular song from 2004 by the American Tejano/Chicano rock band Los Lonely Boys. The song was written by brothers Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza, who comprise the foundation of the band, and it appears on their multi-platinum self-titled album.

Reception

Released as a single in mid-2004, "Heaven" reached the Top 40 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at 16 in August. Later that year, the song began a sixteen week run at number 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in October. It was also a minor hit at country radio, where it peaked at number 46.

AllMusic reviewer Thom Jurek describes the song as "infectious" and draws comparisons to the music of Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Los Lobos. He states that "Heaven" is "a single in the old sense of the word: killer hook, easy groove, a slippery but unmistakable bridge with a beautiful vocal to boot -- all coming in under four minutes."

Awards

The success of "Heaven" led to two Grammy Award nominations and one win for the band at the 47th Grammy Awards, held in early 2005. The song won in the category Best Pop Performance by a Duo group, while Los Lonely Boys were nominated in the category Best New Artist, losing out to Maroon 5.

Heaven (Pomegranates album)

Heaven is the fourth studio album by the Cincinnati indie rock group Pomegranates, released June 5, 2012, on Modern Outsider Records. It was produced by Miguel Urbitztondo who has worked with acts such as Cracker, Daniel Johnston, and Sparklehorse. The album follows their critically acclaimed One of Us in 2010.
