In the final segment of my lecture series on the Revolutions of 1848, I discuss why there was no violent revolutionary activity in Britain or Russia and also discuss the legacies of the Revolutions of 1848. In the mid-19th century, the British Parliament showed a modest openness to reform that was un-matched by the governments on the continent. Although the Chartist movement peaked in the 1840s, it never reached the point of threatening the viability of the government. Russia was another story. While the British held off revolution by passing modest reform legislation, Nicholas I of Russia so violently repressed the Decembrist Revolt in 1825 that the climate was not ripe for revolution even twenty years later. Russia would have its revolution in due time.
While the Revolutions of 1848 were short-term failures, they heavily influenced the unifications of Germany and Italy. Pragmatists took over these efforts and the so-called "Age of Metternich" yielded to the Age of Bismarck. Realpolitik - not consensus - would be the order of the day for European foreign policy in the late 19th century.

The Decembrist revolt or the Decembrist uprising took place in Imperial Russia on 26 December [O.S. 14 December] 1825. Russian army officers led about 3,000 soldiers in a protest against Nicholas I's assumption of the throne after his elder brother Constantine removed himself from the line of succession. Because these events occurred in December, the rebels were called the Decembrists . This uprising, which was suppressed by Nicholas I, took place in the Senate Square in Saint Petersburg. In 1925, to mark the centenary of the event, the square was renamed as Decembrist Square, but in 2008 it reverted to its original name.

Emperor Nicholas I Pavlovich started his 30-year rule with suppressing the Decembrist Revolt. On 14 December, 1825, the day of taking oaths by the new tsar, over a thousand people, including women and children, died. The revolt’s ringleaders were executed, the participants were sent to exile. Later, when Nicholas asked his son what he would have done if he had been the tsar, the young Alexander answered: “I would forgive”. Alexander II Nikolayevich went down in history as liberator. He succeeded in doing the thing that none of his predecessor was able to: he abolished serfdom. However, together with the emancipation of peasants, a new power, unknown before, but unstoppable, unleashed…
The most vivid pages of Russian history and the establishment and consolidation of Russian state power are associated with the eighteen Russian Tsars of the House of Romanov which include such historic names as Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Nicholas I and Alexanders I, II and III. The dynasty ended with the brutal assassination of the last Tsar, Nicholas II and his family by the Bolsheviks in Ekaterinburg in 1917.
The Romanov dynasty played a hugely important role in world history, and the series highlights the life stories and characters of the tsars, recounting their rise to power and their contribution to the dynasty, their merits and their faults, their achievements and mistakes, their victories and defeats in war.
The series also examines the Russian form of 'Caesarism' as a system of state administration - its advantages and drawbacks and how the Russian state changed under the Romanov's rule.
THE ROMANOVS is told in eight epic one-hour episodes using a unique combination of magnificent CGI animation and dramatic reconstruction with careful and accurate attention paid to each period.

The Decembrist revolt or the Decembrist uprising (Russian: Восстание декабристов) took place in Imperial Russia on 26 December [O.S. 14 December] 1825. Russian army officers led about 3,000 soldiers in a protest against Nicholas I's assumption of the throne after his elder brother Constantine removed himself from the line of succession. Because these events occurred in December, the rebels were called the Decembrists (Dekabristy, Russian: Декабристы). This uprising, which was suppressed by Nicholas I, took place in the Senate Square in Saint Petersburg. In 1925, to mark the centenary of the event, the square was renamed as Decembrist Square, but in 2008 it reverted to its original name.
In 1816, several officers of the Imperial Russian Guard founded a society known as the Union of Salvation, or of the Faithful and True Sons of the Motherland. The society acquired a more Liberal cast after it was joined by the idealistic Pavel Pestel. After a mutiny in the Semenovsky Regiment in 1820, the society decided to suspend activity in 1821. Two groups, however, continued to function secretly: a Southern Society, based at Tulchin, a small garrison town in Ukraine, in which Pestel was the outstanding figure, and a Northern Society, based at St Petersburg, led by Guard officers Nikita Muraviev, Prince S. P. Trubetskoy and Prince Eugene Obolensky. The political aims of the more moderate Northern Society were a British style constitutional monarchy with a limited franchise, the abolition of serfdom and equality before the law. The Southern Society, under Pestel's influence, was more radical and wanted to abolish the monarchy, establish a republic and redistribute land: taking half into state ownership and dividing the rest among the peasants.

In the final segment of my lecture series on the Revolutions of 1848, I discuss why there was no violent revolutionary activity in Britain or Russia and also discuss the legacies of the Revolutions of 1848. In the mid-19th century, the British Parliament showed a modest openness to reform that was un-matched by the governments on the continent. Although the Chartist movement peaked in the 1840s, it never reached the point of threatening the viability of the government. Russia was another story. While the British held off revolution by passing modest reform legislation, Nicholas I of Russia so violently repressed the Decembrist Revolt in 1825 that the climate was not ripe for revolution even twenty years later. Russia would have its revolution in due time.
While the Revolutions of 1848 were short-term failures, they heavily influenced the unifications of Germany and Italy. Pragmatists took over these efforts and the so-called "Age of Metternich" yielded to the Age of Bismarck. Realpolitik - not consensus - would be the order of the day for European foreign policy in the late 19th century.

The Decembrist revolt or the Decembrist uprising took place in Imperial Russia on 26 December [O.S. 14 December] 1825. Russian army officers led about 3,000 soldiers in a protest against Nicholas I's assumption of the throne after his elder brother Constantine removed himself from the line of succession. Because these events occurred in December, the rebels were called the Decembrists . This uprising, which was suppressed by Nicholas I, took place in the Senate Square in Saint Petersburg. In 1925, to mark the centenary of the event, the square was renamed as Decembrist Square, but in 2008 it reverted to its original name.
L'insurrection décembriste ou insurrection décabriste est une tentative de coup d'État militaire qui s'est déroulée publiquement à Saint-Pétersbourg le 26 décembre (14 décembre) 1825 afin d'obtenir du futur empereur Nicolas Ier une constitution. L'insurrection fut durement réprimée par le nouvel empereur.

Emperor Nicholas I Pavlovich started his 30-year rule with suppressing the Decembrist Revolt. On 14 December, 1825, the day of taking oaths by the new tsar, over a thousand people, including women and children, died. The revolt’s ringleaders were executed, the participants were sent to exile. Later, when Nicholas asked his son what he would have done if he had been the tsar, the young Alexander answered: “I would forgive”. Alexander II Nikolayevich went down in history as liberator. He succeeded in doing the thing that none of his predecessor was able to: he abolished serfdom. However, together with the emancipation of peasants, a new power, unknown before, but unstoppable, unleashed…
The most vivid pages of Russian history and the establishment and consolidation of Russian state power are associated with the eighteen Russian Tsars of the House of Romanov which include such historic names as Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Nicholas I and Alexanders I, II and III. The dynasty ended with the brutal assassination of the last Tsar, Nicholas II and his family by the Bolsheviks in Ekaterinburg in 1917.
The Romanov dynasty played a hugely important role in world history, and the series highlights the life stories and characters of the tsars, recounting their rise to power and their contribution to the dynasty, their merits and their faults, their achievements and mistakes, their victories and defeats in war.
The series also examines the Russian form of 'Caesarism' as a system of state administration - its advantages and drawbacks and how the Russian state changed under the Romanov's rule.
THE ROMANOVS is told in eight epic one-hour episodes using a unique combination of magnificent CGI animation and dramatic reconstruction with careful and accurate attention paid to each period.
