The countdown for an exciting night with an observation run at the world's most advanced optical telescope, the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), has begun ...
In this ESOcast episode, were going to follow a day in the life of Dieter Nürnberger. Dieter is a staff astronomer at ESO. His job is to support those scientists that have managed to get observing time on ESOs Very Large Telescope at Paranal Observatory in Chile. Dieter spends most of his working days helping the successful few to make ground-breaking discoveries.
Dieter Nürnberger is on his way to meet the visiting scientists to team up for the night to come. The three have been observing together for several nights, today is their final evening and they are keen to get started. Over dinner they discuss plans for the night ahead.
Well before sunset they leave the Residencia and drive up the desert road to the building housing the VLT control room. At the control building they prepare the observations and check the set up of the telescope. Observing time on these great telescopes is precious and delays must be avoided at all costs.
Like a pilot checking his plane before departure, Dieter goes through a detailed check of his instrument, while the telescope operator does the same for the giant telescope. The astronomers have travelled far for a glorious view of the Universe, and here a glorious view of the sunset is included for free! As usual at Paranal, the conditions are perfect and Dieter and the visiting astronomers return with high expectations.

Topic: How to Become an Astronomer
Heidi Hammel: I remember when I did this big, visible program in Baltimore called "The Shoemaker-Levy 9 Comet Crash Into Jupiter." It was a big deal. I was on the nightly news every night for a week. And my local high school in Pennsylvania sent a TV crew down to Baltimore to interview me, and they asked me what was the most important class you took in high school to prepare you to become a world famous scientist? And my answer was Chorus. I had a great Chorus teacher, Sue Shayu [ph?], who was a former Rockette, and she demanded professionalism of her students. And there we were in the chorus, just high school kids, but she made us warm up every time. She told us how to stand, how to hold ourselves, you know, wear lipstick, girls, because the lights will wash you out. She just gave us tips, and she expected us to be professionals. No amateur night in Dixie. And I took that lesson forward with me into whatever I was doing. Whatever I was going into, whether it was going to be chorus or history or astronomy or whatever, do it right. Be a professional. Don't just do a half baked job. Do everything correctly. Get down. Learn the details of what you're going to do. That was by far the most important course for me, Chorus. It also taught me communication skills, and for scientists nowadays, communication skills, whether they are writing skills or oral speaking skills, are incredibly important. So when kids as me what classes do I need to take, I say, "Well, look. You got to take math, because you got to learn the language. And you also have to take communication classes, whether it's an English class or your music classes, band classes to teach you how to cooperate in groups." You don't focus on physics. You make sure you broaden yourself and have a good solid background in many different things. That's what you need to be a good scientist. The science teachers don't like it when I say that. They think you take chemistry, biology. I'm like, yeah, you do need to do those things, but that can come later. Your foundation has to be in basic communication and the basic language skills, and I include math as one of the language skills.
Question: What should budding astronomers study?
Heidi Hammel: Astronomy and astrophysics is a very interesting field, because you can come out at it from many different angles. When I was in college, I didn't like physics a lot, and I really wasn't very good at physics. And there were a lot of people around me who were really good at physics, I mean, scary good at physics. And they weren't much help to me, because I would say, "How do you do this?" They'd say, "Well, the answer's obvious." And I would sit there going, "Hmm, hmm, not to me." So I chose not to major in physics. A lot of astronomers and astrophysicists, has the word "physics" right in there, do major in physics. I chose, instead, to major in earth and planetary science. And so my background was in courses like geology, geophysics, atmospheric chemistry. But, again, a lot of math courses and basic physics courses, things like Newtonian physics, all the way through quantum physics. I did take those courses. I wasn't good at them, but I passed them. I learned them enough to pass. A C is a passing grade is what I learned in college, and something that I tell young people nowadays a lot. C is a passing grade. You don't need straight A's to be a scientist, despite what you may have heard.

An astronomer is a scientist who studies celestial bodies such as planets, stars and galaxies.
Historically, astronomy was more concerned with the classification and description of phenomena in the sky, while astrophysics attempted to explain these phenomena and the differences between them using physical laws. Today, that distinction has mostly disappeared and the terms "astronomer" and "astrophysicist" are interchangeable. Professional astronomers are highly educated individuals who typically have a PhD in physics or astronomy and are employed by research institutions or universities. They spend the majority of their time working on research, although they quite often have other duties such as teaching, building instruments, or aiding in the operation of an observatory. The number of professional astronomers in the United States is actually quite small. The American Astronomical Society, which is the major organization of professional astronomers in North America, has approximately 7,700 members. This number includes scientists from other fields such as physics, geology, and engineering, whose research interests are closely related to astronomy. The International Astronomical Union comprises almost 10,145 members from 70 different countries who are involved in astronomical research at the PhD level and beyond.

Astronomer Royal is a senior post in the Royal Household of the Sovereign of the United Kingdom. There are two officers, the senior being the Astronomer Royal dating from 22 June 1675; the second is the Astronomer Royal for Scotland dating from 1834.
King Charles II, who founded the Royal Observatory Greenwich in 1675 instructed the first Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed, "... forthwith to apply himself with the most exact care and diligence to the rectifying the tables of the motions of the heavens, and the places of the fixed stars, so as to find out the so-much desired longitude of places for the perfecting the art of navigation."
From that time until 1972 the Astronomer Royal was Director of the Royal Observatory Greenwich. As Astronomer Royal he receives a stipend of 100 GBP per year and is a member of the Royal Household, under the general authority of the Lord Chamberlain. After the separation of the two offices the position of Astronomer Royal has been largely honorary, though he remains available to advise the Sovereign on astronomical and related scientific matters, and the office is of great prestige.

Tycho Brahe (14 December 1546 – 24 October 1601), born Tyge Ottesen Brahe, was a Danish nobleman known for his accurate and comprehensive astronomical and planetary observations. Coming from Scania, then part of Denmark, now part of modern-day Sweden, Tycho was well known in his lifetime as an astronomer and alchemist.
In his De nova stella (On the new star) of 1573, he refuted the Aristotelian belief in an unchanging celestial realm. His precise measurements indicated that "new stars" (novae or also now known as supernovae), in particular that of 1572, lacked the parallax expected in sub-lunar phenomena, and were therefore not "atmospheric" tail-less comets as previously believed, but occurred above the atmosphere and moon. Using similar measurements he showed that comets were also not atmospheric phenomena, as previously thought, and must pass through the supposed "immutable" celestial spheres.
Tycho Brahe was granted an estate on the island of Hven and the funding to build the Uraniborg, an early research institute, where he built large astronomical instruments and took many careful measurements, and later Stjerneborg, underground, when he discovered that his instruments in the former were not sufficiently steady. Something of an autocrat on the island he nevertheless founded manufactories such as paper-making to provide material for printing his results. After disagreements with the new Danish king in 1597, he was invited by the Bohemian king and Holy Roman emperor Rudolph II to Prague, where he became the official imperial astronomer. He built the new observatory at Benátky nad Jizerou. Here, from 1600 until his death in 1601, he was assisted by Johannes Kepler. Kepler later used Tycho's astronomical results to develop his own theories of astronomy.

And my answer was Chorus. I had a great Chorus teacher, Sue Shayu [ph?], who was a former Rockette, and she demanded professionalism of her students. And there we were in the chorus, just high school kids, but she made us warm up every time. She told us how to stand, how to hold ourselves, you know, wear lipstick, girls, because the lights will wash you out. She just gave us tips, and she expected us to be professionals. No amateur night in Dixie. And I took that lesson forward with me into whatever I was doing. Whatever I was going into, whether it was going to be chorus or history or astronomy or whatever, do it right. Be a professional. Don't just do a half baked job. Do everything correctly. Get down. Learn the details of what you're going to do. That was by far the most important course for me, Chorus. It also taught me communication skills, and for scientists nowadays, communication skills, whether they are writing skills or oral speaking skills, are incredibly important. So when kids as me what classes do I need to take, I say, "Well, look. You got to take math, because you got to learn the language. And you also have to take communication classes, whether it's an English class or your music classes, band classes to teach you how to cooperate in groups." You don't focus on physics. You make sure you broaden yourself and have a good solid background in many different things. That's what you need to be a good scientist. The science teachers don't like it when I say that. They think you take chemistry, biology. I'm like, yeah, you do need to do those things, but that can come later. Your foundation has to be in basic communication and the basic language skills, and I include math as one of the language skills. Question: What should budding astronomers study? Heidi Hammel: Astronomy and astrophysics is a very interesting field, because you can come out at it from many different angles. When I was in college, I didn't like physics a lot, and I really wasn't very good at physics. And there were a lot of people around me who were really good at physics, I mean, scary good at physics. And they weren't much help to me, because I would say, "How do you do this?" They'd say, "Well, the answer's obvious." And I would sit there going, "Hmm, hmm, not to me." So I chose not to major in physics. A lot of astronomers and astrophysicists, has the word "physics" right in there, do major in physics. I chose, instead, to major in earth and planetary science. And so my background was in courses like geology, geophysics, atmospheric chemistry. But, again, a lot of math courses and basic physics courses, things like Newtonian physics, all the way through quantum physics. I did take those courses. I wasn't good at them, but I passed them. I learned them enough to pass. A C is a passing grade is what I learned in college, and something that I tell young people nowadays a lot. C is a passing grade. You don't need straight A's to be a scientist, despite what you may have heard. -

In this ESOcast episode, were going to follow a day in the life of Dieter Nürnberger. Dieter is a staff astronomer at ESO. His job is to support those scientists that have managed to get observing time on ESOs Very Large Telescope at Paranal Observatory in Chile. Dieter spends most of his working days helping the successful few to make ground-breaking discoveries.
Dieter Nürnberger is on his way to meet the visiting scientists to team up for the night to come. The three have been observing together for several nights, today is their final evening and they are keen to get started. Over dinner they discuss plans for the night ahead.
Well before sunset they leave the Residencia and drive up the desert road to the building housing the VLT control room. At the control building they prepare the observations and check the set up of the telescope. Observing time on these great telescopes is precious and delays must be avoided at all costs.
Like a pilot checking his plane before departure, Dieter goes through a detailed check of his instrument, while the telescope operator does the same for the giant telescope. The astronomers have travelled far for a glorious view of the Universe, and here a glorious view of the sunset is included for free! As usual at Paranal, the conditions are perfect and Dieter and the visiting astronomers return with high expectations.

Heidi Hammel: I remember when I did this big, visible program in Baltimore called "The Shoemaker-Levy 9 Comet Crash Into Jupiter." It was a big deal. I was on the nightly news every night for a week. And my local high school in Pennsylvania sent a TV crew down to Baltimore to interview me, and they asked me what was the most important class you took in high school to prepare you to become a world famous scientist? And my answer was Chorus. I had a great Chorus teacher, Sue Shayu [ph?], who was a former Rockette, and she demanded professionalism of her students. And there we were in the chorus, just high school kids, but she made us warm up every time. She told us how to stand, how to hold ourselves, you know, wear lipstick, girls, because the lights will wash you out. She just gave us tips, and she expected us to be professionals. No amateur night in Dixie. And I took that lesson forward with me into whatever I was doing. Whatever I was going into, whether it was going to be chorus or history or astronomy or whatever, do it right. Be a professional. Don't just do a half baked job. Do everything correctly. Get down. Learn the details of what you're going to do. That was by far the most important course for me, Chorus. It also taught me communication skills, and for scientists nowadays, communication skills, whether they are writing skills or oral speaking skills, are incredibly important. So when kids as me what classes do I need to take, I say, "Well, look. You got to take math, because you got to learn the language. And you also have to take communication classes, whether it's an English class or your music classes, band classes to teach you how to cooperate in groups." You don't focus on physics. You make sure you broaden yourself and have a good solid background in many different things. That's what you need to be a good scientist. The science teachers don't like it when I say that. They think you take chemistry, biology. I'm like, yeah, you do need to do those things, but that can come later. Your foundation has to be in basic communication and the basic language skills, and I include math as one of the language skills.
Question: What should budding astronomers study?
Heidi Hammel: Astronomy and astrophysics is a very interesting field, because you can come out at it from many different angles. When I was in college, I didn't like physics a lot, and I really wasn't very good at physics. And there were a lot of people around me who were really good at physics, I mean, scary good at physics. And they weren't much help to me, because I would say, "How do you do this?" They'd say, "Well, the answer's obvious." And I would sit there going, "Hmm, hmm, not to me." So I chose not to major in physics. A lot of astronomers and astrophysicists, has the word "physics" right in there, do major in physics. I chose, instead, to major in earth and planetary science. And so my background was in courses like geology, geophysics, atmospheric chemistry. But, again, a lot of math courses and basic physics courses, things like Newtonian physics, all the way through quantum physics. I did take those courses. I wasn't good at them, but I passed them. I learned them enough to pass. A C is a passing grade is what I learned in college, and something that I tell young people nowadays a lot. C is a passing grade. You don't need straight A's to be a scientist, despite what you may have heard.

HOW TO GET IN: Get involved with research projects run by professors at your school as an undergrad.
CAREER PATH: Stay involved with research projects throughout the years you're in college. After you graduate with a PhD, you look for a "postdoc" position, where you can keep conducting research. Postdocs usually last around two years, so you may have to go through a few before you've done enough research to be a recognized astronomer. Then you can find a job at a university, where you'll run your own research projects, publish them, and share your discoveries with others.
Alternatively, you could support an independent telescope or astronomy-based mission, doing your own research while also helping run the mission. Here, you might be an expert on a particular astronomical instrument, a software designer who writes the code for controlling the telescope, an outreach worker who interprets data and distributes it to the public, or any number of other specialized jobs.
PAYBACK: Median annual salary: $95,500.
DOWNSIDES: You'll need many years of education and experience to find a job.

At 17 months he could count to 100 in English and to 10 in French. He could also say and identify his alphabet in English and French. By 19 months he knew his polygons from 3 sided- to-12 sided shapes.
By 2 he was counting in English, Mandarin, Spanish and French. Now he is 4, he does simple arithmetic +, -, *, / and reads at the 3rd grade level, studies astronomy, and loves ninja turtles.

On an August night in 1977, aliens from outer space may have tried to contact us.
That is but one of the many interpretations of the ‘Wow!’ signal, an odd reading that turned up on the Big Ear radio telescope’s activity reports.
Over the decades, the singular occurrence has evaded substantiated explanation, but that may not be the case for long.
Antonio Paris, an astronomer in Florida, has suggested comets may be the source of the irregularity and was able to determine the most likely suspects.

Batygin breaks down this hypothesized planet that is estimated to be between 1 to 10 times the mass of the Earth, along with the Kuiper Belt, the discovery of Neptune, and why Dr. Mike Brown deemed Pluto no longer a planet in this episode of Antidote hosted by Michael Parker.

Guy Consolmagno does; he is both a Jesuit brother and a planetary scientist at the Vatican Observatory, splitting his time between the meteorite collection in Rome (which he curates) and the Vatican telescope in Arizona. Thanks to his Vatican connections, his work has sent him around the world several times to dozens of countries and every continent (including a meteorite hunting expedition to Antarctica). In this talk he will share some of those adventures, and reflect on the larger meaning of our common experience as scientists... not only what we do, but why we do it.

I will start with a short summary of my research on galaxies and the involvement of youth – PhD students, undergraduates, and even high-school students – in that research. In addition, he founded SIP, a renowned high school research program. GuhaThakurta’s research focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies, large and small, near and far, through detailed studies of their assembly history, galaxy cannibalism, dynamics and dark matter content, chemical enrichment, and star-formation history. His research group studies the Andromeda galaxy, Milky Way galaxy, and many other galaxies in the Local Volume. The group frequently uses the Keck telescope and Hubble Space Telescope.
