About once a year a score is produced and released on CD that is so potent, so filled with wonderful experiences in emotion that writing a review for it is a breeze and a joy! GREAT EXPECTATIONS is that score for 1998. This is by far one of PATRICK DOYLE'S best scores. It is one of his most unique. For GREAT EXPECTATIONS Doyle employs a number of techniques and styles that are compelling, fitting for their respective scenes, as well as highly entertaining as stand-alone music. The score reflects the directors and producers vision for the film adaptation of the classic story. It is the classical experienced and seen through contemporary eyes. In the case of the score it is classical heard experienced through contemporary ears and enhanced by contemporary styles.
The opening track helps set this score a part from most every other score for 1998. Here Doyle utilizes a solo whistler and the voice talents of Tori Amos. Gently flowing behind them are softy playing by ever-swelling strings, chimes, and wind instruments. It helps to develop the setting of the youth and innocence of young Finn, the story's main character. This track could accompany the most lazy of puffy- cloud- filled- blue- sky days fit for laying in the grass and daydreaming. It is unassuming but poignant.
This score is filled with dramatic pieces that follow the typical Doyle-style found in HENRY V and THE LITTLE PRINCESS. At the same time there are a number of tracks that one would not easily imagine fitting on the same CD release. Somehow Doyle pulls it off and it makes for a great listen straight through the CD. From the previously mentioned dramatic/suspense pieces to the soft guitar, played classically by John Williams, Estella's Theme (4) to the contemporary-rhythmic pieces like Kissing in the Rain (8) to big band/jazz to the operatic I Saw No Shadow of Another Parting (7) to the spanish-guitared Besame Mucho (20) this score touches a gamut of textures and emotions as does its film.
The true genius of GREAT EXPECTATIONS is the synthesis of these varying styles into one collective experience that one truly never tires of having. Unfortunately, it's early release in 1998 all but insured it would be forgotten come award time, which is a true shame. The Titanic hoopla has swallowed up all concurrent releases. Given Patrick Doyle's recent health problems, it is all the more amazing the score he was able to write. There are a lot of healthy composers who can only dream of doing such magnificent work. Patrick Doyle is certainly deserving of, at least, a GG or Oscar nomination. If I were to put a CD together, I'd never dream of placing classical, jazz and contemporary dance material on the same CD and actually enjoy the listening experience. All credit to Doyle and the producers of this score release for attempting and pulling off the near-impossible.
A high recommendation of GREAT EXPECTATIONS would be an understatement. Of the few scores one might classify as the-only-one-you-have-on-a-deserted-island-type, this is surely one of them! Given its great variety yet strong unity, it makes for the perfect island companion...well, excluding certain companions of the female variety! Whatever one has to pay for this...it's worth it.

Great Expectations (1998 film)
Great Expectations is a 1998 contemporary film adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel of the same name, co-written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón and starring Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert De Niro, Anne Bancroft and Chris Cooper. It is known for having moved the setting of the original novel from 1812-1827 London to 1990s New York. (The book was first published in 1861.) The film is an abridged modernization of Dickens's novel, with the hero's name having also been changed from Pip to Finn, and the character Miss Havisham has been renamed Nora Dinsmoor. The film received mixed reviews.
Plot
10-year-old Finnegan "Finn" Bell is playing on a beach in the Gulf Coast when an escaped convict suddenly pops out of the water and overpowers him, making Finn promise to bring back food, medicine and bolt cutters to get the iron shackles off his leg. Finn complies, and the convict unexpectedly tries to make Finn take him by boat to Mexico. The police seize the small boat heading out to sea. The convict hides on a buoy, and Finn's boat is towed back to shore. The next day, Finn sees on the news that the convict, mobster Arthur Lustig, had escaped from death row, but was recaptured and would face execution soon.

Great Expectations (2013)
PlotThis stunning adaptation of Dickens' classic tale was captured live from the Vaudeville Theatre in the West End. Although Great Expectations has been adapted for film on two separate occasions, once by David Lean in 1946 and most recently by Mike Newell, it has never been produced for The West End or Broadway, widely believed to be too difficult to translate to stage. However, this Jo Clifford adaptation has been universally acclaimed as a triumph on its sellout tour of the UK head of its West End debut. In addition to the production, this version include red carpet arrivals from the February 7 premiere and behind the scenes footage exclusively for cinema audiences.

Great Expectations
Phillip Pirrip, known as Pip, meets a convict or two in a graveyard and sets into motion a series of events that lead him from a comfortable life in his brother-in-law's forge to a mysterious inheritance and his acquaintance with the eerie Miss Havisham, her beautiful ward Estella, and the unusual lawyer Jaggers.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS is that score for 1998. This is by far one of PATRICK DOYLE'S best scores. It is one of his most unique. For GREAT EXPECTATIONS Doyle employs a number of techniques and styles that are compelling, fitting for their respective scenes, as well as highly entertaining as stand-alone music. The score reflects the directors and producers vision for the film adaptation of the classic story. It is the classical experienced and seen through contemporary eyes. In the case of the score it is classical heard experienced through contemporary ears and enhanced by contemporary styles.
The opening track helps set this score a part from most every other score for 1998. Here Doyle utilizes a solo whistler and the voice talents of Tori Amos. Gently flowing behind them are softy playing by ever-swelling strings, chimes, and wind instruments. It helps to develop the setting of the youth and innocence of young Finn, the story's main character. This track could accompany the most lazy of puffy- cloud- filled- blue- sky days fit for laying in the grass and daydreaming. It is unassuming but poignant.
This score is filled with dramatic pieces that follow the typical Doyle-style found in HENRY V and THE LITTLE PRINCESS. At the same time there are a number of tracks that one would not easily imagine fitting on the same CD release. Somehow Doyle pulls it off and it makes for a great listen straight through the CD. From the previously mentioned dramatic/suspense pieces to the soft guitar, played classically by John Williams, Estella's Theme (4) to the contemporary-rhythmic pieces like Kissing in the Rain (8) to big band/jazz to the operatic I Saw No Shadow of Another Parting (7) to the spanish-guitared Besame Mucho (20) this score touches a gamut of textures and emotions as does its film.
The true genius of GREAT EXPECTATIONS is the synthesis of these varying styles into one collective experience that one truly never tires of having. Unfortunately, it's early release in 1998 all but insured it would be forgotten come award time, which is a true shame. The Titanic hoopla has swallowed up all concurrent releases. Given Patrick Doyle's recent health problems, it is all the more amazing the score he was able to write. There are a lot of healthy composers who can only dream of doing such magnificent work. Patrick Doyle is certainly deserving of, at least, a GG or Oscar nomination. If I were to put a CD together, I'd never dream of placing classical, jazz and contemporary dance material on the same CD and actually enjoy the listening experience. All credit to Doyle and the producers of this score release for attempting and pulling off the near-impossible.
A high recommendation of GREAT EXPECTATIONS would be an understatement. Of the few scores one might classify as the-only-one-you-have-on-a-deserted-island-type, this is surely one of them! Given its great variety yet strong unity, it makes for the perfect island companion...well, excluding certain companions of the female variety! Whatever one has to pay for this...it's worth it.

This series impacted a great many people during its run. The research and production are incomparable, and Sutherland's superb, confiding voice makes this one of the best presentations on literature that you will find outside of prep school or university. I was frustrated to find that the series is not available anywhere on DVD, so I provide it here, for those who also remember and have since been deprived.

PLOT FOR "GREAT EXPECTATIONS"
On Christmas Eve, around 1812,[14] Pip, an orphan who is approximately six years old, encounters an escaped convict in the village churchyard while visiting the graves of his mother and father, as well as those of his siblings. The convict scares Pip into stealing food for him, and a file to grind away his shackles, from the home he shares with his abusive older sister and her kind, passive husband Joe Gargery, a blacksmith. The next day, soldiers recapture the convict while he is engaged in a fight with another convict; the two are returned to the prison ships whence they escaped.

PLOT FOR "GREAT EXPECTATIONS"
On Christmas Eve, around 1812,[14] Pip, an orphan who is approximately six years old, encounters an escaped convict in the village churchyard while visiting the graves of his mother and father, as well as those of his siblings. The convict scares Pip into stealing food for him, and a file to grind away his shackles, from the home he shares with his abusive older sister and her kind, passive husband Joe Gargery, a blacksmith. The next day, soldiers recapture the convict while he is engaged in a fight with another convict; the two are returned to the prison ships whence they escaped.
Miss Havisham, a wealthy spinster, who wears an old wedding dress and lives in the dilapidated Satis House, asks Pip's "Uncle Pumblechook" (who is actually Joe's uncle) to find a boy to play with her adopted daughter Estella. Pip begins to visit Miss Havisham and Estella, with whom he falls in love, with Miss Havisham's encouragement. Pip visits Miss Havisham multiple times, and during one of these visits, he brings Joe along. During their absence, Mrs. Joe is attacked by a mysterious individual and lives out the rest of her life as a mute invalid...

Great Expectations is Charles Dickens' thirteenth novel. It is the second novel, after David Copperfield, to be fully narrated in the first person.[N 1] Great Expectations is a bildungsroman, or a coming-of-age novel, and the story genre is Victorian Literature.[1] It depicts the growth and personal development of an orphan named Pip. The novel was first published in serial form in Dickens' weekly periodical All the Year Round, from 1 December 1860 to August 1861.[2] In October 1861, Chapman and Hall published the novel in three volumes.
Great Expectations was to be twice as long, but All the Year Round's management constraints limited the novel's length. Collected and dense, with a conciseness unusual for Dickens, the novel represents Dickens' peak and maturity as an author. Great Expectations was written, according to G. K. Chesterton, in "the afternoon of his life and glory," and the penultimate novel Dickens completed, preceding Our Mutual Friend.
It is set among the marshes of Kent and in London in the early-to-mid 1800s.[1] From the outset, the reader is "treated" by the terrifying encounter between Pip, the protagonist, and the escaped convict, Abel Magwitch.[3] Great Expectations is a graphic book, full of extreme imagery, poverty, prison ships, "the hulks," barriers and chains, and fights to the death.[3] It therefore combines intrigue and unexpected twists of autobiograhical detail in different tones. Regardless of its narrative technique, the novel reflects the events of the time, Dickens' concerns, and the relationship between society and man.
The novel received mixed reviews from contemporary critics: Thomas Carlyle speaks of "All that Pip's nonsense,"[4] while George Bernard Shaw praised the novel: "All of one piece and Consistently truthfull."[5] George Orwell wrote; "Psychologically the latter part of Great Expectations is about the best thing Dickens ever did."[6] Dickens felt Great Expectations was his best work, calling it "a very fine idea,"[7] and was very sensitive to compliments from his friends: "Bulwer, who has been, as I think you know, extraordinarily taken by the book."[8]
Great Expectations has a colourful cast that has remained in popular culture: the capricious Miss Havisham, the cold and beautiful Estella, Joe the blacksmith who is always kind and generous, the dry and sycophantic Uncle Pumblechook, Mr Jaggers, Wemmick and his dual personality, and the eloquent and wise friend, Herbert Pocket. Throughout the narrative, typical Dickensian themes emerge: wealth and poverty, love and rejection, and the eventual triumph of good over evil.[3] Great Expectations has become very popular and is now taught as a classic in many English classes. It has been translated into many languages and adapted many times in film and other media.
s Dickens began writing Great Expectations, he undertook a series of hugely popular and remunerative reading tours. He had separated from his wife, Catherine Dickens, and was keeping secret an affair with a much younger woman, Ellen Ternan. However, the genesis of Great Expectations is not glorious, artistically, and the idea of romance and economic circumstances dictated the novel's design and implementation.

From the outset, the reader is "treated" by the terrifying encounter between Pip, the protagonist, and the escaped convict, Abel Magwitch. Great Expectations is a graphic book, full of extreme imagery, poverty, prison ships, "the hulks," barriers and chains, and fights to the death.It therefore combines intrigue and unexpected twists of autobiographical detail in different tones. Regardless of its narrative technique, the novel reflects the events of the time, Dickens's concerns, and the relationship between society and man.
