Street Fighter (ストリートファイター, Sutorīto Faitā), commonly abbreviated as SF or スト, is a fighting game franchise by Capcom. The game's playable characters originate from different countries around the world, each with his or her own unique fighting style. It is Capcom's second best-selling franchise, having significant success worldwide. With its first game released in 1987 and the game has evolved through the years as well as through its many iterations, remains one of the most popular video games today.
Street Fighter, designed by Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto, made its debut in arcades, in 1987. In this game, the player takes control of martial artist Ryu, who competes in a worldwide martial arts tournament, spanning five countries and 10 opponents. A second player can join in at any time and take control of Ryu's American rival, Ken.
The player can perform three types of punch and kick attacks, each varying in speed and strength, and three special attacks: the Hadouken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku. These are performed by executing special button combinations with the controls.
Kazuo Yamazaki (born August 15, 1962) is a Japanese former professional wrestler, who is known for his work in New Japan Pro Wrestling and UWF International.
Yamazaki's wrestling career began in May 1982 in New Japan Pro Wrestling. He wrestled his debut match on May 6 against Tatsutoshi Goto. During this time, he was also a student of Satoru Sayama, better known as Tiger Mask. Whenever Kuniaki Kobayashi strip Sayama of his mask, Yamazaki was always the first one to help remask him.
In 1984, Yamazaki joined the Japanese UWF. However, differences between his mentor Satoru Sayama and Akira Maeda over direction caused the promotion to fail.
He rejoined New Japan in 1985 as a junior heavyweight. Despite this, he found more success in tag teams in 1987, winning the IWGP Tag Team Championship with one of his mentors, Yoshiaki Fujiwara.
Shigehiro Ozawa (小沢 茂弘, Ozawa Shigehiro, 29 August 1922 – 12 October 2004) was a Japanese film director and screenwriter. He directed more than thirty films and is best known for his film The Street Fighter.
Kinji Fukasaku (深作 欣二, Fukasaku Kinji, 3 July 1930 – 12 January 2003) was a Japanese film director and screenwriter.
He is known for directing the Japanese portion of the Hollywood film Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), yakuza films including the seminal Battles Without Honor and Humanity (1973), samurai period pieces such as Shogun's Samurai (1978), and his controversial final film Battle Royale (2000). He was also known for his trademark shaky camera technique, which he used extensively in many of his films from the early 1970s.
In 1997, he received the Purple Medal of Honor from the Japanese government for his work in film.
Kinji Fukasaku was born in 1930 in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture as the youngest of five children. When he was 15 years old, Fukasaku's class was drafted, and he worked as a munitions worker during World War II. In July 1945, the class was caught in artillery fire. Since the children could not escape artillery fire, they had to dive under each other in order to survive. The surviving members of the class had to dispose of the corpses After the war, he spent much of his time watching foreign films.
The Street Fighter (激突!殺人拳, Gekitotsu! Satsujin Ken), literally Clash, Killer Fist!, is a Japanese martial arts film released in 1974 and produced by Toei Company Ltd. It was released in the US by New Line Cinema and became one of the first films to be a commercial success for the distributor. It is notable as the first film to receive an X-rating in the United States solely for violence. In the UK it was originally released as Kung Fu Streetfighter, presumably to avoid confusion with the Charles Bronson movie Hard Times which was initially released as The Streetfighter in the UK.
The Street Fighter inspired two sequels, Return of the Street Fighter and The Street Fighter's Last Revenge. Additionally, the film Sister Street Fighter and its sequels is a spin-off series of The Street Fighter. There was another spin-off entitled Kozure Satsujin Ken, which was brought to the US by a different company under the title Karate Warriors. The video game The Darkness has the entire movie available, to watch, on any of the in-game TVs.
